It didn’t take empathy to notice Iyun’s clear nervousness, but Ana didn’t seem to notice or didn’t acknowledge it as she made several more notes and then raised an expectant eyebrow at the ensign. “And…?” she prompted, encouraging the woman to continue with whatever she had wanted to say before cutting herself off.

Darren, CoP

“Uhm,” Riani started, trying to gather her thoughts. The honest answer was that she didn’t even know where she had been going with her reply. Trying to remember, she played with the lollipop in her hand. After what felt like forever, but probably wasn’t that long of a pause, she continued softly, “I feel like I, my family, my people, owe Starfleet and the Federation a lot and giving back is a good way to show gratitude … Isn’t it?” Even though her answers to that question had been deemed good enough to get her into the Academy, she was still afraid that someone would say that wasn’t good enough. Or that she wasn’t Starfleet material after all. Looking down at her lap, she waited anxiously for the Counsellor’s response.

The corners of Ana’s firm-pressed lips tweaked just slightly as Iyun’s question toward the end of her answer reminded her of a certain surgeon that had called her on a similar manner of securing validation. She didn’t make a note this time, but she remained silent for a moment. She began to speak, to ask her next question, but as her dark eyes took in the expression on the scientist’s face, she paused, realizing that this would be a time that validation of the woman’s choices was required. “That is a laudable reason, Ensign,” she stated, perhaps slightly more firmly than necessary, but the intent remained the same. She found herself leaning forward so that she could also peer into Iyun’s lap, but forced herself to adopt a more upright position and then launched into her next line of questioning. “How do you spend your off duty time?”

Darren, CoP

Lifting her head slightly, a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips and eyes. She knew she shouldn’t need other people to tell her that she made the right choice joining Starfleet or that her reasons to do so were good. Yet affirmation from others was at times the only thing that kept her self-doubt at bay. at the Counsellor’s question Ria met her eyes for a moment and replied, “I meditate every day and I read and write a lot. Also, I love working with clay. It’s a great counterbalance to my job. I don’t want to be anything other than a physicist, yet the … tactility of clay … and that I can’t mess up … that perfect and correct isn’t the goal, for me at least … I like that.” A faint blush coloured her cheeks as she spoke and just like before when she talked about her passion for astrophysics her eyes sparkled and part of her that became so easily hidden by her anxiety became visible.

The corners of Ana’s eyes had crinkled with just the slightest hint of disgust at the word ‘meditation.’ The downturn of her lips at the mention of clay only served to emphasize the hint as she briefly contemplated the one experience she had had with the texturally offensive substance. Before her distaste could become blatantly obvious, though, the passion in Iyun’s words regarding the lack of perfection and correctness in her hobby reached her and her brow wrinkled slightly in confusion at the concept. “Do you typically seek perfection as a goal?” came the measured response, with no indication that Ana had noticed the blush or really any of the non-verbal cues surrounding the conversation.

“No … yes … maybe … I don’t know,” Riani replied hastily at first, but with every word spoken more nervously before biting down rather hard on her lower lip, trying to think of a way to explain herself better. It wasn’t till she tasted blood, that she realised how hard she’d been biting down on her lip. Hopefully, it was only a tiny tear and the Counsellor wouldn’t notice. “I guess I always strive to do my best and to make no mistakes,” she eventually said softly. “I don’t want to let anyone down.”

“I understand,” Ana replied simply. She took a deep breath as she studied Iyun for a moment and then asked, “is there anything else you’d like to share with me?”

Darren, CoP

Riani shook her head slowly. Somehow she had expected that the counsellor would say more and instead was taken a little by surprise. “I don’t think so,” she said and after a pause for a heart beat or two she continued a little hesitantly, “I’ve … I’ve been seeing a counsellor regularly while I was at the Academy … for my anxiety. I though … maybe … maybe it would be good to … to continue that?”
