Dira snorted. “That, they do not.” With deep inhale and a slight sigh, Myqian gazed out across the quiet mess hall. “I have gone over the… incident, a million times in my head. Wouldn’t change any of my choices. And yet, doing the right thing did seem to get us no end of grief.”

“Did I tell you he came to say farewell?” Dira was a typically calm person, but underneath was a temper that could be provoked in the right circumstances, or even regularly by the right people. One of those said people had had an usual ability to grate on every one of her nerves.

Bob squinted in complete bemusement, staring off into space as he did so. It seemed to take all of his mental effort to process this piece of information. Once he had been sure that he did not misunderstand the sentence, he looked again at Dira.

“How did that go, exactly?”

Dira was quite often a placid body of water. Little could ruffle her if she didn’t want to be, and this was especially true when she was in therapist mode. But off duty, and when she could let her guard down (like with Mason now), people discovered her to be a woman of passions. She felt things deeply and had feeling about things strongly. When blended with her training it meant that everything was in balance.

At least the topic of Commander William Franks came up. While there was no one on the Calypso that knew the full extent of the animosity between her and her now former ship’s XO, Bob came closest to knowing and sharing the deep loathing. Despite her advice to let things be and move on, there was this tiny little warning bell that kept reminding her that this was not going to be so easy, even if they put light years between themselves and that detestable man.

“Not pleasant,” she said at length. Dira wasn’t sure if or how much to share with her friend, but she had brought it up, so it was only fair. “He made it quite clear that he wasn’t… happy about my new role, though he did express his delight in the fact that I was leaving.” That was hardly the whole of it, but parts of her just shuddered at his usual arrogant tactics and attempts to either unsettle her or piss her off.

Commander Myqian, XO

“That just shows you that he’s more stupid than petty,” Bob said. “The smart thing to do is to is say ‘oh, congratulations on your new assignment, we’ll miss you here, blah blah blah’ even if everyone knows you don’t mean it. That way, five or ten years from now you’ll just remember your whole experience with him as ‘oh yeah, we had a bad mission but he wasn’t all terrible.’ Now you’ll remember him as the guy who nearly killed us through incompetence and has a small penis.”

“Seriously, if your going to be a command officer, you need to be good at something. If you can’t be good at piloting space craft you should at least be good at piloting space office politics to cover for that.”

– Robert Mason, CE
