Zoi ordered with the efficiency of a long time customer and speed her tea as Dira made her order. She was a patient person with most situations and showed ease with waiting. Her bright blue eyes studied the woman before her, taking in mannerisms and details. When their server left, Zoi answered the question. “Looks like I have some crewman to take under my wing. I am not sure if Rico had approved them before he left. It seems like they got here and suddenly forgot that rank aside, they still have to do things the Star Fleet way. However, this isnt my first rodeo as they say. While I am new to the department head position on the Ogawa, I have many years of experience as a Chief of Security on board Star Fleet vessels.”

She knew this would cause questions even if her file had been read and Zoi wondered what questions this woman would have for her concerning her lower rank and position despite her age and years of service. She found herself watching Dira and waiting.

Dira smiled. “Rank is a funny thing. It can mean everything in a situation or absolutely nothing. My impression so far in what little I’ve interacted or observed the crew is that it matters less than the leadership being delivered. People who join Starfleet tend to want to either be leaders or are happy to be lead. It’s a very large generality but I’ve found it to be mainly true much of the time. So long as you’re navigating that fine I doubt you’ll have much of an issue.” She could imagine that a security team assigned to a medical ship to be different than the ones she had known before. There was an element of ‘why do I have to be here?’ or feeling like it was a punishment because it was less of a glamorous role, but it was, when people really thought about it, even more important than say serving on a battlecruiser. It was perhaps less active and there was a need to temper boredom, but Dira expected that those that were sincere in their desire to serve would step up and do so without much complaint.

“Keep me apprised on how people are settling in. Though even as I say that I recognize that the crew is in an usual situation, given that we don’t really have a ship we can settle in to,” Myqian said with amusement.

Commander Myqian, XO

Zoi nodded. “True enough, but until we start being able to settle onto the ship, there is still a lot to do. While Starbase security handles things on the Starbase, it is still up to our security department to run point on security escorts throughout our ship, especially in sensitive areas. I have watches posted at all times there. We also have security at check points throughout the ship to make sure that staff working on the ship are approved and working in areas to which they are assigned. Once the ship is nearer completion, all workers will start requiring security escorts to decks that have been cleared and closed to all but essential and approved staff. I will let you know if I feel like something isn’t working in our dynamic. I have yet to test any of them but Rico seemed pretty pleased with the majority of the department so I dont think I will have too much of a problem there.”

Myqian nodded. It was good to know that that departmental transition had gone fairly smooth. One less thing to worry about.

“Are there any specific concerns or needs you have for Security?”

Their orders arrived just then and Dira gave a warm smile to the server. “Thank you,” she said as she accepted the pot pie she indeed had gone for. Her stomach reminded her just how hungry she truly was this evening.

Zoi also brightened as the food was delivered and gave her thanks to the staff presenting it. It didn’t take long before she was digging into the dinner. She wasn’t a messy eater, but she did thoroughly enjoy her food and ate with gusto. She could be far more delicate when eating if necessary, but Zoi did not feel like this was that time.

Thinking on the very simple question, the XO shook her head slowly. “No, I don’t think I really do. Much of my job right now is just observing where everyone is at and making sure everyone has what they need. Is there anything, any resources you need or think you might need that I can deal with? We might as well sort that out while at base.” Without confirmation of the ship’s true status Dira was having a hard time believing the Ogawa would be leaving dock anytime soon. Starfleet was not in the habit of letting an entire crew sit around doing nothing, which made her wonder if decisions farther up the line were being made that they didn’t know about yet.

Commander Myqian, XO

Now it was her turn to think on the question. There were a lot of angles to consider, though most were things like requisitions for weapons and holo training programs and the like. In general, she had already taken care of much of those needs. “Well, there are two things of which I can think you might help with. One is training in negotiation tactics and handling mentally unstable persons… that sort of thing. The other is facilitating training with medical personnel on how best to evac those who are wounded. We need to be able to at a glance, get an idea of whether or not we should move a person in a situation. Ive had years of battle experience and have a good idea, but I dont think the people in my department know well enough for my tastes. As this is a medical ship, we need to be more attuned to how best to assist the security of people doing medical work in the field.”

Dira nodded enthusiastically. “All of that I can help with for sure. I’ll be meeting with the medical staff gradually but when I speak to the Chief of Staff I’ll mention the need for triage cross-training.” It was a good item to have on the project list, since it was something they could easily do here on Starbase.

“As for negotiation and potential mental illness issues, how do you see that sort of instruction going? Do you want a seminar type thing? A practical simulation? Both?” Myqian asked.

Commander Myqian, XO

She had considered this extensively and had an answer ready for the XO. “I would like a seminar, with examples using the holodeck to see what each situation might look like. Its easy to point out veins popping from extreme agitation and other physical symptoms of mental or medical issues. Start with the most common and go from there. Honestly, I feel like negotiation and mental health are two separate subjects though there is some overlap of course. My goal with negotiation is to try and talk someone down from drastic action that could endanger lives including that person’s.”
