Riani’s eyes went wide and the colour seemed to drain from her face as she listened to the doctor. She never thought bruises could actually be dangerous. How could she not have known that? Spelled out like that it seemed so obvious and it made her feel like a fool. She knew that that hadn’t been his intention, of course. Yet she couldn’t seem to help feeling the way she did.

“Now don’t get too worried,” Brad said, noticing her change in expression. ” There’s very little danger of that if you seek treatment in time. Obviously, we’d rather you not be injured at all, but if you do bump into something and think you might have bruised something, just drop by and we can take care of it, alright? “

Chewing on her lower lip, Riani nodded, trying to push her worries and feelings of stupidity to the back of her mind. After a couple of moments she looked up again and asked hesitantly, “Do you want me to come here for every single bruise, no matter how small?” Turning scarlet she added in a barely audible whisper, “I bump into things a lot…” Her voice trailed off and she dropped her gaze to her lap once again.

The osteogenerator beeped to indicate its work was done and Riani’s toe was repaired.

“Hm,” Brad said. “Maybe at first,” he started, “but we can also train you in first aid so you can take care of it yourself. I understand most of the science labs have a medkit?”

“Yes, there is,” Riani replied with a nod. “Also, … I had some basic first aid training at the Academy,” she continued and then added hastily, “But of course brushing up my knowledge and deepening it, would be good, Sir.”

“Like learning more about bruises,” Brad teased gently. “I am curious as to why you bruise so easily, though. I bump into my fair share of things, but rarely with enough force to cause a bruise.”

At his gentle joke, Riani’s cheeks turned crimson again and and she looked back down at her lap.

“Your foot’s all better, by the way, if you want to put your boot back on.”

While putting first her sock and then her boot back on, she said in a low voice, “I suppose so. No one has ever seemed concerned about it so far and I got my fair share of medical check-ups over the years…” Her voice trailed off once again as concern, confusion and even a hint of annoyance (with herself? previous medical professions? …?) flooded her.

“Hm,” Brad said, disapproving clearly of her prior medics. “You’d think someone would have, but even in these days I guess you can still be surprised. Would you mind laying back, Ensign? I want to run a couple more detailed scans.”

Ria simply nodded, feeling unable to utter even a single word. And as she lay down on the biobed, Riani was fighting tears. What was supposed to be standard medical evaluation was horrible and humiliating enough without adding tears into the mix. Scanning her once again, Brad would see again that most of her bruises were on her arms and legs, and two on her hip. All of them were relatively small and in various stages of healing. Some weren’t even visible to the naked eye anymore due to the colour of her skin. Yet other than that she seemed to be fine. There were no signs of an underlying health condition, lack of certain vitamins or signs that she was taking any medications or supplements that had blood thinning effects. It seemed that she had not only figuratively, but also literally thin skin.

‘Interesting,’ Brad thought. ‘I’ve never seen anything like this.’

“Alright, you can sit up now,” he said. “I just wanted to see if there was an underlying condition that made you more prone to bruising, because that would be something we’d need to know to treat you if you ever had something serious happen,” he explained. “You don’t, by the way.”

This was starting to feel awkward. He hadn’t made a girl cry in nearly 30 years, and never by accident…

Sitting back up, Riani mumbled, “Okay.” She still felt like she was about to burst into tears and like she had a lump in her throat. What she really wanted was to leave. Yet bolting out of sickbay didn’t seem like a smart idea. So instead she stayed put while struggling to keep a handle on her emotions. Glancing briefly up at Brad, she added meekly, “I’m sorry I’m causing so much trouble.”

~Ensign Iyun, Scientist

“It’s not an imposition,” Brad said gently. “Checking up on the crew, making sure you’re at your best and figuring out how to get you there if you’re not is literally what we’re here for. If we don’t have patients in here, some of the junior doctors commandeer the empty beds to ‘refresh their anatomy studies’ and Lord knows it’s a pain to pull them off each other and make them disinfect the place.”
