Dira nodded enthusiastically. “All of that I can help with for sure. I’ll be meeting with the medical staff gradually but when I speak to the Chief of Staff I’ll mention the need for triage cross-training.” It was a good item to have on the project list, since it was something they could easily do here on Starbase.

“As for negotiation and potential mental illness issues, how do you see that sort of instruction going? Do you want a seminar type thing? A practical simulation? Both?” Myqian asked.

Commander Myqian, XO

She had considered this extensively and had an answer ready for the XO. “I would like a seminar, with examples using the holodeck to see what each situation might look like. Its easy to point out veins popping from extreme agitation and other physical symptoms of mental or medical issues. Start with the most common and go from there. Honestly, I feel like negotiation and mental health are two separate subjects though there is some overlap of course. My goal with negotiation is to try and talk someone down from drastic action that could endanger lives including that person’s.”

Zoi, CNS

She nodded again. “Okay, so lets plan on a set of workshops and go from there. I’ll see who from the psychiatry department wants to be involved, but I will probably join in myself as well.” She had extensive experience and it was good for her to see how cross-training would work with this crew.

She made a mental note to check on this subject later and let it go, watching Dira take her first bites. The food was delicious in her opinion but she found herself wanting to know what Dira thought of the place. It wasn’t as if Zoi had shared the Boiler Room with anyone before so perhaps that was it.

Dira delved into her pot pie, breaking through the crunchy crust and scooping some of it out along with the hearty contents. Her first bite was something she enjoyed immensely and took her time to savour it. “Excellent suggestion,” she said with a smile.

Commander Myqian, XO

Zoi grinned. “Thank you.” She replied with genuine pleasure and continued to dig into her own meal for a while before looking at the woman with a curious expression. “Do you really have that hard a time keeping yourself from psychoanalyzing people?”

A somewhat amused expression appeared on the XO’s face. “It is a rather bad habit, especially after two decades of doing so pretty intensely. But I wouldn’t say I’m always analyzing people for the sake of making decisions on them. More like, since I have a particular skillset, and I’m psi-positive, I’m more aware of a person’s… being, than they might be. I don’t necessarily do anything with that knowledge and many times it’s simply not my place,” Dira said practically.

Commander Myqian, XO

“Hazard of the job.” she said in between bites. “I don’t know if I would consider that a bad habit though. I mean, it could probably have its down sides. I’m just not sure I would call it a bad habit. Take for instance, my job. I can’t be in a room without knowing where all the exits are, without having taken the attitude temperature of everyone in my vicinity, of knowing a myriad of details about people in a glance without even trying. It means I rarely completely relax even in pleasant company and my attention never stays fixed to the person I am engaging in conversation which some think is rude. Granted I have been doing security work for many more years than 20.”
