After finishing her lunch and conversation with the COS Alexis wandered off, still reading the PaDD she carried. The research on DNA and memory was…interesting, but not very developed. She wondered if that was because, as Ever had told her, some of it was top secret? Or was the research just shoddy? It was hard to tell from the published papers. But there must be some merit, the publications were some of the most respected. She finished her shift in sickbay and then began to wander about the station, stretching her legs and reading the PaDDs again. She actually sat down in a deep window sill and, pulling her feet up under her, began to pour over not just the articles, but the reviews of the research as well. That led to looking at the researchers other works and those associated with them, and before long, Alexis was down a rabbit hole of preliminary research. It was so typical of her, that someone who actually liked her, might call it endearing, but there was no one like that. Just colleagues that saw her over active mind, hungry for more information.

“Hello Alexis.” Soulis’ Irish accent carried with an elegance that undercut the surprising proximity of its source. There had been no audible footfalls for the young woman to catch wind of; more likely she had felt a breath on the back of her neck.

Upon turning, Alexis would find the man stood but three feet behind her. He somehow garbed his black and blue sportswear, shorts included, as if it were a three piece suit. His dark hair was closer trimmed at the sides than it had been the last time Alexis had seen him yet where it swept across his forehead he almost faded into the dark corridor behind him.

“I hope the years have treated you well. Having seen you around these last days, it certainly at least appears they have done so.”

Soulis

The sound of that voice, bringing back the pain and heart break. Alexis would never forget it, no matter how much she might want to. There was a time when that voice had meant everything to her. Alexis turned, still startled by the sight of him, despite recognizing his voice, and fighting the urge to turn and run, as she had those years ago. This time though, she’d walk, she’d save herself that much dignity.

She didn’t want to notice how the years had treated him. How good he looked, the more militaristic hair cut and how it suited him. She didn’t want to register the familiar sensation of his breath on her neck before she had turned around. She was staring up at him from her seat at the window and she stood, suddenly, to bring them more to eye level, though Soulis had always been taller than her. Though to Alexis’ dismay, he apprently still meant a lot to her. Seeing him again wouldn’t hurt so bad, otherwise, right?

She took a step back in retreat. Unfortunately for her, her eyes always gave away everything she was thinking, and this case there was a lot to see: heartache, love, sadness, uncertainty, disbelief, and confusion. “You’ve…been watching me?” She wouldn’t say his name. She couldn’t, even when talking with Ever the day before, she couldn’t keep the slight twist of affection that entered her voice when she said it. And right now she really didn’t want to feel that.

A slow blink and an amused curve of the lips were the product of Alexis’ nervous words. Whether the response was to her question or her manner was impossible to say. Soulis struck a conciliatory tone nonetheless, presenting his palms. “I have simply seen you pass by a few times as I’ve taken meals on the promenade. How could I not notice you? How little you have changed is remarkable. That’s youth for you, I suppose.”

He fell silent, simply observing her for several seconds, some form of curiosity building in his expression. “What are you reading?” came the question.
