“I’m the head of the Science department. Surprisingly I was offered the position shortly after joining the previous Ogawa right before the mission which saw her disabled. I hardly got a chance to meet the previous head before things got crazy and they transferred off right after.” Achilleas said while being a little winded. He increased his pace on the elliptical. “I’ve met the new XO, a security officer, someone else from medical, all right before or during that crazy fungal incident. I’m so glad we have a ship again. As much as the starbase life was okay, having to not share only so many holodecks with a ton of people is very nice.” His breath was coming in short and quick huffs now as his heartrate was accelerated.

Alexis nodded, “I can understand that. I mean, I could be a doctor anywhere. But being on a hospital ship is really something unique and special to be a part of. It’s an amazing opportunity that I’m glad I got to take.” She increases her pace a little, hitting the middle of her session. “I don’t use holodecks that much. Was there a shortage on the star base?”

“They were definitely busy.” Achilleas began to answer while being pretty winded. He decreased the pace to one for cooling down. “It’s just with so many people the demand was certainly more than they had holodecks for. You’d be lucky if the reservation wasn’t three or four days out.” He said and then took breaths in from his nose and out through his mouth. “I’m wondering if being a scientist on a medical ship isn’t a blessing in disguise. While the Ogawa isn’t exactly the prime choice versus say a science ship, it does enable me to head a department very early in my career and there’s always science to do no matter where you are. Plus my staff are rockstars in their field and could’ve gone to more illustrious postings. The pressure to produce results is a lot less here as opposed to somewhere like the Daystrom Institute.”

Alexis thought about it and decreased her pace, to be polite, and end her session early. “I can see that. Of course, from my point of view,” she smiles a little hoping she doesn’t sound…self important, “your department, on Ogawa anyway, works very closely with medical. You all have the opportunity to help save lives, make them for the better. Your department was invaluable during that fungal outbreak. They really did impressive work.” Some of the department had been infected but those that hadn’t been had stepped up to help medical and get everyone taken care of. Alexis was impressed by them.

Achilleas likewise came to a stop and turned to face Alexis with an embarrassed smile. “I’m glad my officers were able to help and I’ll be sure to pass on your kind words. I wish I could say the same for myself. I know that being under the influence of the fungus wasn’t really anything I or anyone else could have prevented, but I’m still pretty chagrined about being useless during that emergency. I’m thankful that the tea party we threw wasn’t nearly as severe as what else I heard about but it’s still mortifying after the fact.” He took a deep breath a few times to regulate his heart rate a breathing before pointing in the direction of the replicator. He started walking in that direction with towel in hand to wipe his face.

Alexis slowed to a stop and stepped off the machine, taking her PaDD with her. She followed Achilles’s over to the replicator and after him, ordered a cool but not cold bottle of water. After taking a few sips Alexis responded. “I’m curious why some were not affected. The number was very small in percentage to those that were. Your department however, even under the influence did remarkably well. Some areas became dangerous and even violent. Commend yourself for that.”

Achilleas replicated a water bottle for himself and quickly drank its contents. “Whew. I wish I could take credit for that but I didn’t have much if any conscious control. I’m not a neurobiologist or anything but it was interesting how the personality changes seemed to be divergent upon which area everyone was in. While we didn’t get violent in the science lab almost everyone had a compulsion to wear a hat and have a tea party. It was a focused personality shift with very little variation dependent on location. As for why some weren’t affected, I can only guess that the airborne timeframe was either short or they were resistant to infection.”

“Psychiatry was very fascinated by the common hallucination. I’m just glad we figured out what was wrong. I’m curious why the filters in the air system didn’t filter out the initial spores. And the actual infestation was huge.” Alexis shrugs. If she wasn’t so worried about the medical repercussions she might wonder if the fungus had been planted on purpose by someone. “Is your department getting settled onto the new ship? I wasn’t on the old Ogawa so it’s just another sickbay to me, but the medical staff are like kids in a toy store.” She sips her water, continuing to attempt to make conversation. Dr. Walker told her he expected her to step up and be the chief. And part of that was to, at least, know the other department heads. She couldn’t work with them if she didn’t at least know who was who. Right?
Lt. Bonner, AMO

“The old ship was nice but this new ship is a dream.” Achilleas responded with a grin. “The science labs has cutting edge equipment, the ship’s sensors are more sensitive, my staff all get individual room and don’t need to share. We are technically understaffed for a ship of this size but that has given us plenty of room. I don’t know about medical, but we spent nearly a week cataloguing and resorting the equipment and supplies in the labs. Whoever put it all together did not have anything where it should’ve been. After that I had to order my officers to take a break. It was very easy to get caught up in testing everything out and with it being a new lab with new equipment almost everything needed recalibrating too. It’s long and boring work for most but it’s very fulfilling to do it for what it will enable us to achieve.”
