“Yes, of course,” he said as he slumped in the seat, a blanket wrapped around his shoulders as his weight shifted back and forth. He looked over the pair, “I trust it isn’t something that we are responsible for.” He glanced over his shoulder towards the child’s bedroom. “She is getting worse, isn’t she?”

Dira gave him a sincere and reassuring smile. “I can’t say myself without examining her, but I promise we’ll take good care of you all,” she said as she scanned the father.

Why Ever had asked to look after the little girl must have been a lapse in judgement. She really did not like children and found them to be most unreasonable. Smiling through the clear screen of the helmet, she nodded at the father before moving towards the little girl and her mother. Her dark eyes focused on the child as she sent her thoughts as calmly as possible to both mother and child. In a crisis, it was easier on most people to be as close to what was comfortable and natural. For Betazoids, that meant non verbal communication. By this point, if the child was patient zero, or one of the parents, their minds may have been far too gone to make much sense. But then again, being Betazoid might have been a better buffer than not. Ever bent down on one knee in front of the child and held out a hypo. Hello lovely. I am Dr. Zeanar and I have some medicine for you. I heard you are not feeling well. This will make you all better. Can I give it to you please?

=^= Taylor to Myqian. Did you hear the joke about the delirious Captain, Commander?=^=

Dira smiled in relief at the captain sounding very much herself. =/\=I believe the punchline involves a tiara?=/\= she teased. =/\=Stand by for an update.=/\= Right now she wanted to focus on the father and getting this situation under control.

Commander Myqian, XO

The tricorder scans of the family showed that the parents had some sort of flu, but were otherwise fine. BP, pulse, metobolic panel, all were fine for someone who something only a little more severe than the common cold. The girl, on the other hand, was quite worse. Her fever was far too high for what she should have, and it was clear she was having some sort of fever dream.

Her mother clutched the girl’s hand, a copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland sitting on the bedside table spine up as if it had just been sat down. “I have been reading to her. She seems to like it, gives the dreams something to focus on.” She squeezed the child’s hand again, “She is in a state of turmoil. Can you sense it?”

=/\= Grouch to Ogawa XO. I think we’ve got a bit of problem with the simple removal of the fungal growth from the vents; it isn’t just alive, it’s actually self-aware in some way. I won’t say I want to name it yet, but that might be the case. Either way, I think I can at least establish a containment field around it for now. =/\=

Well that certain but a damper on their plans! =/\=Acknowledged, Chief. Go ahead with the containment field. Are we still able to release the treatment for everyone through the vents or is no longer advised?=/\= She was of course calm regardless of her thoughts and actual feelings. Her barriers were well up even though the suppressant was still active… for now.

=/\= That shouldn’t be a problem, given that I’m just applying a filter to the particles this is releasing. =/\=

Dira wasn’t sure about the symptoms of the illness other than the hallucinogenic effects, so it was hard to say if these other symptoms were related or how exactly. For the time being though, she thought it best to assume a connection until she had further evidence. “Other people on the starbase are feeling unwell also and we’ve found something that is helping. May I give it to you?” she asked the father.

Commander Myqian, XO

The father nodded grabbing a tissue to wipe at his nose. “I don’t know what we got, but it feels like the Gorlaxian Flu,” he coughed a few more times then tilted his head to the side exposing his neck to the XO.

Ever pressed the hypospray gently against the little girl’s neck. Whether it was the high fever or half dream state the child appeared to be in, Ever thought she did not appear to be in a good state. Considering quickly and quietly how much she could reach out to the child’s mind without causing potentially more harm, the Betazoid decided the medical bay was probably the more appropriate place to proceed with more intervention. Just in case. Her brother Richrel ‘s face flashed crossed her memory as a sober reminder that the use and awakening of telepathic abilities were not always safe in children. And this was a very unusual case and situation. Listening to the hiss of the spray, Ever smiled softly, “that should make you feel a little better. Commander Myqian, I recommend we move the family into medical just as a precaution. Plus I think the replicators there make the best chocolate on the base. At least that’s what I hear.”

CoP Zeanar

For the two Betazoids, it was clear that there was a psychic pressure coming from the girl. If they dropped their defenses for just a second it would be as if their minds were filled with a fever dream of sorts, the images of the story in the book next to the table would come spilling into their minds until they cut themselves off again. When the girl was sedated however, the pressure faded away when she slipped back into normal slumber.

Ever had caught glimpses of the little girls thoughts before she had drifted off to sleep safe from visions of the story tell that seemed to be haunting the rest of the starbase. As her head rested against her mother’s chest, Ever gave another soft smile and nod to the mother. She is fine now. But I think we are best getting her to bed at least, or medical if that makes you feel better. Standing up slowly, she turned back to the XO and shrugged waiting to see what Myqian wanted to do next and observing how her boss was handling the effects of the virus.
