Ever rubbed the tips of her two index fingers against her thumb, watching the motion for several seconds before raising her eye level back to Grayson. At this point, and probably at any, it was much to dangerous to be truthful about Ever’s secret. The other women’s concern was evident and true. Thinking and choosing her words carefully, Ever decided on something close enough, yet was still honest. “I think you and I have a lot in common when it comes to work and work ethic. If my guess is right, work is about all there is these days and maybe for the last....I have lost track of the years. Sometimes I feel the weight of the importance that it is the only thing that matters. This research I am working on has caught the attention of people who might want to use it for all the wrong reasons and that makes me feel a bit paranoid at times. Anyway, hopefully we will be wrapping it up in a couple of months. Until then, I am probably going to be a bit on edge. Nothing to worry about. Once we get off this station and on the Ogawa, it will only be Starfleet personnel.”

Grayson was encouraged that at least Ever had not completely deflected or tried to deny what she had seen. The explanation didn’t address why it seemed her fortune cookies were the source of distress, but even without psionic abilities, Mariah felt she was getting some kernel of truth. She privately wondered if the reference to people using her research for the wrong reasons was a veiled admission that Ever’s safety was in jeopardy, but that was merely speculation and not fact. To press further would only seem like badgering, and Grayson preferred to have more facts than to go on a wild goose chase no matter what her instincts seemed to be selling her. “It’s not paranoia if people are genuinely after you,” the psychiatrist replied, half in jest and half in concern. “In all seriousness, if you find yourself on edge and in need of someone to talk to you, it goes without saying my door is open. If we can’t count on each other to be sounding boards, whom can we trust?”

“I will defiantly take you up on that. Hmm. It would probably be a good idea to make an appointment with you actually. I, uh, experienced some trauma on the Penal Colony, and then there is also some very old things still lingering around from the Occupation of Betazoid. All of which is in my file and I am sure you have already read through. Nothing that has not been cleared for duty. But a check-up is probably in order. Better to stay on top of things I think,” Ever said as she deflected the conversation away from the paranoid comments from Grayson. Ever was not in the slightest paranoid. She knew full well someone was following her. Whoever it was might be good at hiding their thoughts, but the feelings she could still pick up on. At this point, she just wasn’t sure if their intentions were good or bad. Reaching over, she placed her hand on top of the other woman’s and gave it a quick squeeze, indicated her level of trust. Normally, telepaths did not make physical contact unless it was with someone familiar to them. She returned her hand just as quickly and placed it on the table. “Well, I think I have kept you long enough Mariah. Unless you have anything less you would like to ask or discuss, I think I would like to get in a few laps at the pool before retiring for the day.”
