Of course this entire time Dira had been evaluating Zeanar’s abilities as their new Chief of Psychiatry. It was just how this went. But this was only a first meeting and first impressions were just that. It would take working with the woman more to get to know her better. “Ahh, yes, but my turn,” she said with a glimmer of amusement in her dark eyes.

Ever knew this would be her boss’s response. While both were eager to tick off boxes, it was still a matter of actually going through the motions. While Ever had been approved for this posting and nothing was going to change that, Dira would still need to start the process of getting to know the ship’s CoP. For most people, that was nearly impossible. Ever kept herself away from personal relationships and very rarely allowed another to cross professional boundaries. Particularly since the unfortunate incident with Alexis. Her smile dropped slightly for a split second thinking about the conversations yet to come with the assistant chief medical officer. “Sure ask away.”

“These are obviously unusual circumstances and while we are await further news about our new ship, I am doing what I can to establish our initial needs with fleet command. We’re all dealing with temp workspaces, but is there anything you need for yours? Or access to resources we don’t yet? There are certain things I can expedite, while others require some negotiation.”

“Not here on the base. Though as soon as possible, I would like to have access to my research space on the Ogawa to ensure the security measures are in place before I bring my data and equipment aboard. Not sure how much notice you have been given from Starfleet Intelligence Director. Hopefully I will be finished in a couple of months. Once I get everything done and transferred back to Starfleet, I shouldn’t need that level of security any more. That is dependant on a couple of things though. One being the Intelligence Department does not require any more help from me. And the second is that Dr. Bonner agrees to assist me.” Ever answered evenly hoping the XO didn’t dig in too much with questions.

Dira frowned, the bulges near on either side of the bridge of her nose causing little furrows as her brows creased. “I actually haven’t been given much information at all. It’s been quite the whirlwind. But why would Dr. Bonner need to assist you? She is going to have quite enough to do helping Dr. Walker run a state of the art medical facility that is easily three times the size of the broken ship we currently have sitting in dock.”

Commander Myqian, XO

Ever gave a slight laugh before answering. “Every doctor on the Ogawa will be conducting research. It’s the number two reason we sign up these kind of assignments. I am surprised you are not conducting one. Or maybe you really are completely out of the game? Don’t worry. Alexis is like me. Neither of us have a life outside of work and get very little sleep. She will, as will I, run our departments and still have time for research. Alexis and I know each other from a previous.....work experience. She may be young, but don’t let her beauty and youth fool you. The woman is a genius. Particularly with genetics and DNA, which is what I need her help with at the moment. Sorry you haven’t been updated on the project. I will get you a report across, as much as I am allowed. But trust me, once Dr. Bonner knows I am here for her, what’s the human saying about wild donkeys? I don’t recall. Anyway, Alexis will be surprised for certain and eager to contribute to the project. Like I said, it should only take a couple of months.”

Wow, that was a lot of assumptions about her rolled into a few sentences. Interesting. Dira gazed evenly at Ever. “No one said anything about preventing research- I’m all for it,” she said flatly. “But as the first officer I am saying that my first duty is to the crew and the ship. I’m fine with being read into a situation as it evolves, but let me make myself very clear. We are about to move from a ship with a crew complement of thirty, to one that has over four hundred. Quite frankly, you yourself will be very busy as well. By all means conduct your research and invite others to participate, but it one,”-she held up her index finger-“will not interfere with any person’s regular duties, two”-she held up a second finger”-does not interfere with the function of the ship, and three”-she held up a third finger-“at the first sign of burnout from anyone on the project, I will intervene. Am I very clear?” Dira had never been a pushover ever in her life and she wasn’t about to start now. But nor was she unfair or demanding. All she was striving for her was a clear understanding of her expectations and at what point she would step in.

Bump

Words and accusations had landed sharply as had intended. Ever had no intentions of mincing her meaning and was typically unapologetic. Meeting the XO’s on gaze, she held her own. Perhaps it was honesty of a telepath or a fired warning shot not to interfere with the research project. Myqian would find out soon enough what exactly the new CoP thought about her boss. Betazoids could not hide from each other for long and Ever did not hold her tongue as she would with a non telepath. Though she was mature enough not to respond with her own human gestures with fingers. “Extremly clear sir. Anything else?”
