It had been a weird few days, that much was certain. The old man the doctor, had taken him hostage and tried to dissect him and then NEs from medical had rushed into the holodeck, disengaged the programme and the cell he was in and sprayed the man who had now gone on leave.
They had sprayed him too, even though he tried to explain he wasn’t infected. But they had looked so worried he had coughed and made a big song and dance of coming to himself and that had made them feel better.
Now he was sat at the dental chair of the starbase infirmary with a lieutenant in the chair who certain did not floss. He sighed as he sealed another growing cavity and added in a tone that sounded like two tomb stones rubbing together.
I OFTEN WONDER IF ALBERT WAS RIGHT. NOT THE RECEPTIONIST THE REAL ONE YOU UNDERSTAND. HE SAID THAT DENTISTRY WAS NO CAREER PATH FOR ME EVEN AFTER I LEFT EVERYTHING IN ORDER AND AFTER I FOUND THIS FRANCHISE TO DROP MYSELF INTO he added some more cotton to the mans mouth and turned his hooded skull to look him in the eyes. Glowing blue pinpricks of light from deep inside the blackest of black where his eye sockets were. YOU UNDERSTAND HOW IT IS.
The poor crewman nodded in the sort of way that a mouse cornered by a lion would, wide eyed and terrified of the creature that worked on his toothache. His eyes kept sliding away from the mans face as if his brain just didn’t want to register what it saw there. He had heard him of course…but the mans mouth hadn’t moved. The words just seemed to appear in his brain without a by your leave of his ears. His white knuckles clenched the chair beneath him and he swore a silent prayer to the prophets that once this was done he would never, never forget to brush again.
I KNEW YOU WOULD the figure of Joe Black said, oblivious to his patients terror as he picked up the sonic drill,
