=/\=Myqian to the Infirmary and to Captain Taylor. We have a family of three who need further medical attention. They are symptomatic and the child, a telepath, has been feverish and her dreams match the mass hallucination people are experiencing. We believe them to be our patient zeros. We’re going to arrange for them to be beamed into the Infirmary, but as a precaution I want a quarantined space to beam them into ready asap. Additionally, one of the engineers is working on getting the ventilation system ready for mass distribution of the aerosol treatment. But he also found a fungus that seems to have some sort of sentience. I’ve agreed that a containment field is a good precaution but we’ll have to proceed carefully going forward. I suspect that that is the base cause of the illness itself, but someone will probably have to cross-check the readings to see if it’s the same.=/\=

=^= Understood Commander. Keep me informed. Stand by.=^=

“What the Hells,” Brad muttered. “This has ‘Science Department’ written all over it,” he said. “Some biologist was probably studying the effect of LSD on mushrooms, got transferred, forgot to both log his work or take it with him, and somehow it got in the vents and it blew its acid-laced spores all over the station.”

She laughed shaking her head. “We should be so lucky. I’m worried someone bought a trinket off world and we’ve got a Pandora’s Box affect happening.” She like the way the man’s mind worked.

He sighed, tapping his combadge. =/\=Acknowledged, Commander. We’ll clear a quarantined space over here and signal when we’re ready to receive the patients.=/\=

Casting his gaze over to the part of the Infirmary he’d most recently occupied, he commanded the computer to create a sterile field around three biobeds, only permeable by his order.

Jenyfer’s smile had fallen and the drink was forgotten as she rose to get the hypos ready. “If this is something sentient, then the spray we are making will kill it. Is that something we are prepared to do?” She was at her console with several prepared hypos at the ready. “We’ll have to think of something else if we don’t want to just outright kill it.” She bit her lip, her hands rising to pull her hair once more into a neater ponytail from the one that had slipped loose while in the suit.

Murmuring under her breath, she was suddenly all scientist once more. “Maybe some kind of sleeping agent, instead. But do fungus sleep?” She turned to the Commander. “Do we have a Vulcan, or even a full Betazoid, on board?” Her eyes lit up with an idea. “If this fungus is in contact with the little girl in the dream, perhaps the mind meld could create a bridge and make the spores, or whatever they are, realize they are hurting people. Then we could find out what they need and perhaps create an environment for them to go to instead of being purged.” She wasn’t sure how well it would work, but it was all she had to go on.

Willow ran her hands through her newly cleaned hair and considered. ”Thats an idea…” she said considering. Her head still felt slightly fuzzy as she tried to work out who she had onboard and if the starbase had anyone.

“Isn’t Commander Zeanar a Betazoid?” Brad asked. “She’s on the scene already with Commander Myquian, unless I missed out on who was going where?”

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

” Good idea.” Willow said to both then when she was sure that the area had been prepared for the beam in hit her badge again,

=^= Taylor to Myqian, ready when you are commander. Report back here when transport is complete. =^=

=/\=Acknowledged, Captain. They’re on their way.=/\=

Brad turned his attention to the quarantined beds, waiting for the patients’ arrival. He, personally, was quite prepared to eradicate this fungus, no matter its level of sentience, because of the hazard it posed to others. Transporting it to an isolated planet where it could replicate to its own content was more complicated than it was worth.

Willow waited along withe the medical staff. She looked over at Cai and shook her head once indicating he should stay away where it was safe. She glanced at Brad.

”We may need to consider the sentience aspect…” she said. ”Remember, first do no harm.”

“However sentient the original fungus producing the spores we’re dealing with may be, the spores themselves infecting our people are at best a fetus. I have no problems performing as many abortions as we need to stop this outbreak,” Brad said, a hard look on his face.

“These aren’t symbionts, Will, they’re parasites.”

About that time the shimmering hum of the transporters happened, phasing in the three infected family members into their quarantine.

Jenyfer agree, to some extent. They certainly needed to place the crew above all else. But the ‘other’, be it fungus or some type of sentient being, was still something they had to take into account. “I just want it on the record that we try and see if its sentient and, if so, see how we can save and transplant it. If it is a being known in this region, and we merely wipe it out, wouldn’t it possibly cause issues with other races we come across in the future? I know there’s little margin of anyone knowing, or caring, for a fungus like being. But if they are known, and live here, can we afford that kind of mark on the Federation?” Maybe it was a long shot, but then again, the last thing she wanted was some other brutal, less fungal, creature coming for them because they had killed its friend or ally.

“I’m not going within 50 meters of the origin of those damned spores,” Brad said, somewhat testily. “Not even in a hermetically sealed environmental suit with two redundant sources of oxygen.”

He was, truthfully, mere seconds away from calling the Engineer who’d found the damn thing and ordering him to kill it with fire, and didn’t really understand why the other two officers (and doctors) in the room with him (one of which had also been affected by the damn things) were apparently hell-bent on saving it so it could continue to infect others.

Jenyfer laid a hand on the Commander’s arm, not thinking. “Easy… I wouldn’t ask that of you. But if we can get it to leave the ship peacefully instead of gassing hundreds of our crewmates, kids and families, or worse, setting fire to it or something equally damaging to the station, isn’t it worth it?” She let go with a blush, realizing they didn’t know one another well enough for the touch she had given. “Sorry… but we need to find a way to get it to leave with the least amount of damage to crew and ship. And if it doesn’t work, we gas the hell out of it and flush it out the ventilation ducts. Agreed?” She glanced around at the others before resting her gaze back on the Chief.
