Gerald was back at the starbase’s sickbay within 2 days of his last visit, doing his best to stretch out the medication but remembering that he wasn’t going to let himself get complacent. He approached and knocked on the bulkhead, “Dr. Bonner? Sorry I’m a day late.” He had been caught up in a few projects on the base and wanted to get those finished before too long.

Alexis looked up. “Gerald, come in. Have a seat.” She had been going over files that day. “I was getting ready to call you. How are you settling in?” While he talked she transferred some information to a PaDD and handed it to him.

“So I’ve looked at your immuno-suppressant. And, as I told you, it wasn’t lasting long enough, so I’ve been working on it. This dose is different. It is stronger, but it’s made to last longer as well. So hopefully the increased strength won’t bother you too much since your metabolism was blowing through the previous dosage. It can cause headaches due to dehydration, so instead of 8 glasses of water a day I’d like you to increase that to 12. 96 oz a day. If you get headaches come back and see me. There is also the possibility of nausea. If that happens I can give you something for that as well.” This information was contained on the PaDD along with the warning signs of rejection that Gerald would already be familiar with.

“Have you had to replace any thing in the last couple days?” Alexis asked.
Lt Bonner, AMO

Gerald sat down and smiled weakly as he grabbed the PaDD and read it over while listening to the doctor explain. “So you’re tellin’ me that this is going to help my body stop rejectin’ the implants? Or at least slow down the rejection?” Gerald put the PaDD down and looked at the Doctor as he leaned on the desk, “I’ve had to replace a few filaments in my optical matrix and a cable between my bio-neural pack and the cranial plating, however this cable was routine. The filaments though shouldn’t have failed.” He sat up again and took note of the increased requirements for water intake and the altered dosage. “Any luck on replacing these things Doc?”

Gerald Hopkins, Eng

“Right now I’m hoping with the correct dosage it will slow down the rejection. In a perfect world it will stop the rejection. But your body has been rejecting the implants for awhile now, so we will work on getting you to that point. This should make it last longer before you need to replace any components.” She listened as she spoke, “Did you keep the filaments? Any time you need to replace anything, keep it. If I can look at how they are damaged it can help me determine how to adjust the medicines or what replacements we can make. As for getting rid of what you already have, I’ve started compiling a list. If your optical matrix is giving you problems, that might be a place to start. Biomechanical eyes. Your scans showed your optical nerve is still intact so it would be a good fit. They will give you close to the same types of inputs you get now, but will work within your body like real eyes.” She leans back in her seat. “There are a lot of options out there, and you have a lot of implants Gerald. One option though, as far as your neural system goes, is using a positronic neural net to overlay the brain. It connects everything together and then helps the body rebuild. There is also artificial organs, and then cloning. Using scans from before you lost so much, we can use cloning to recreate those organs. Rejection is less likely because it’s already your genetics. Usually we would scan the damaged tissue to clone it, but that’s not an option here. So I would need to experiment to see if we could do it just from previous records and DNA mapping.”

Alexis would be hard pressed not to see a tear ever so slight in the corner of Gerald’s good eye as he said, “You mean I could look like a person again? And function too?” He smiled as he shook his shoulders a little, “Oh yes my filaments, here” Gerald said almost after the fact as he handed over a small container with three yellow strands that appeared to have burnt ends. His shoulders sank a little at teh mention of the positronic neural net, “I wish I was exempt from the ban but sadly as I didn’t have one before the ban I can’t get a new one....” He said trailing off, “Doesn’t mean I couldn’t get an older model right?” He wondered allowed. Doctor I think this sounds wonderful, just let me know what you need me ta do in order to help ya out. I appreciate everything so far already and want to make sure that you know that.”
