Pilar walked into the main sickbay after the awards ceramony the night before. She sighed, she really didn’t like being on the Starbase, but that was where they were stationed for the moment. She looked around for the Chief Medical Officer to report for duty. The good thing about the starbase, sickbay tended to be a bit busier than on the ship, but the injuries and illnesses were more mundane. She tugged on her uniform and walked over to a console and signed in and looked around.

Head Nurse

Pilar fell into a routine quickly, she spent the first day or two on the Starbase doing inventory, because, well, things were rather slow. She was not used to being not busy. She also spent more time with Otana, working on her behavior. She was not seeing as much progress as she would have liked and was now swaying back to doing the surgery that they had discussed prior to arriving. Having it done on the Starbase was far more optimal than having it done on the Ogawa. It was still risky and Pilar wanted to make sure that it was the proper way to go. She knew that the damage could not be repaired. So many things to think about.

Head Nurse

Pilar sat down at the computer and began doing some research on the pros and cons of the surgery. She trusted her co worker, but she wanted to make sure that she understood the ramifications. She and Derrik were trying to work through this and they had had some arguments about it. Otana was always the focus of what they wanted and what would be best for her. Pilar continued her research and they would talk again tonight.

Head Nurse

Pilar sat down and began working on some reports that she needed to get done. She simply wanted to go back to her quarters and just sleep. She pulled up the scans of Otana’s brain scans and began going over the proposed surgery and the recovery time. She also looked at the complications that could arise from this. She pulled up a picture of her daughter and looked at that picture. She rubbed her temples and looked at the picture and sighed. She needed to talk to the Drake. She touched her comm badge =^=Dr. Marshall, can I talk to you in Sickbay?=^=

Head Nurse

=/\=On my way=/\=

A few minutes later, Drake appeared. “What can I do for you today Nurse Pilar?” He straightened his labcoat as he waited for the head nurse’s reply.

-Dr Drake Marshall

Pilar looked at Drake “We need to discuss the surgery for Otana.” She said “If we can do this while we’re here on the base that would be preferable.” She said as she looked at her hands and then back at Marshall “Her behavior is becoming worse.” She added.

Head Nurse

Drake exhaled deeply. He stepped over to a computer terminal. After a few taps he said “surgical suite 3, 19:00 hours. We’ll do in room prep. Try to give her as much recovery time here as we can.” Drake looked at the head nurse. As soon as she gave the all clear, his team would be in motion.

-Dr Drake Marshall

Pilar nodded “Do it.” She said without a moment’s hesitation.

Head nurse

He paged his assisting nurse. =/\=Nurse Lena Khev to the surgical department, Nurse Khev to the surgical department.=/\= “Nurse Khev will be here to meet you.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

Pilar nodded “I’ll go get Otana ready to come to Sickbay.” She said now that they had made a decision she touched her comm badge =^=Derrick. Otana will be having surgery at 1900 hours.=^= She said =^=I’ll be there shortly to get her and bring her to Sickbay.=^= Derrick’s response was very simple =^=Ok. We’ll be ready.=^=

She turned to Drake “How soon do you want me to have her here?” She asked having forgot her watch that morning on the nightstand (ooc: say twenty minutes)

Head Nurse

“Be here in…” he thought for a second “twenty minutes.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

Pilar nodded and stood up so that she could go to their quarters and gather Otana and Derrick and return to Sickbay.

Twenty minutes later, Pilar walked in with her daughter and husband, picking Otana up and sitting her on one of the beds, they waited for Dr. Marshall to come out. Pilar looked resolute as did Derrick. Otana seemed slightly irritated that she had been taken away from her play time.

Head Nurse

Drake came out a moment later with nurse Khev. “Nurse Pilar, Mr O’Keefe. Unless you have any questions or concerns, let’s get started.”

Lena was preparing anaesthetic. She had her doubts about performing surgery on a child this young, but Drake was confident as ever. She approached Otana and said “Hi sweetheart. Can I ask you to close your eyes for a minute? Like you’re playing tag.”

-Dr Drake Marshall/Nurse Lena Khev

Otana nodded and closed her eyes as requested. Her mother had said that they were going to try and make her feel better. She didn’t like when she acted bad and she tried not to. She didn’t know exactly what they were going to do, but she knew she was safe because her mom and dad were with her.

Head Nurse

Lena gently administered the anaesthetic, still slightly uneasy. She looked back at Drake who only said “I’ll meet you there.” To Pilar and Derek he offered more. “It’s difficult to say how long it will take. You’re welcome to stay right here until we’re done. Just know that she’s in good hands.”

Scrubbing up was a ritual. Done a certain way to feel perfectly in control. Snapping red gloves on meant it was time.

“Let’s get ready to begin.”

-Dr Drake Marshall/Nurse Lena Khev

-bump-

Pilar nodded and watched as Otana fell asleep “We’ll be right here for as long as it takes.” She said and took Derrik’s hand and looked at her husband as they took Otana into the surgical suite. She sighed and wondered if they were doing the right thing. Only time would tell.

Head Nurse

Drake wandered into the OR, freshly scrubbed up. “Status?”
“She’s ready Doctor.”
Drake took a set on a stool behind the head of the operating table. “Exoscalpel.” The instrument slid into his hand.

This procedure had few steps, but took a long time.
Step 1: perform an incision and relieve any pressure around affected area of the patient’s brain. Not difficult. Not much swelling. Plenty of lesions though.

Step 2: Excise lesions. Tricky, delicate work. Drake demanded utter silence as he worked, removing each piece of damaged tissue.

Step 3: Tissue regeneration. Each place where there had been a legion now needed healthy brain tissue. Drake prayed to whatever higher power he could nothing of that he wasn’t lobotomising a child.

Step 4: Close. Easy enough. But after the tense procedure that led there, Drake was fried.

He exited the Operating Room. “O’Keefe family? Derrick and Pilar O’Keefe?” He looked around as they moved Otana into recovery.

Pilar stood up and looked at Drake “Yes.” She said coming over and folding her arms in front of her, unsure what to expect from what Drake had to say about Otana.

Head Nurse

Drake smiled a little. “The first bit of news is good, she made it and is in recovery. she seems stable, you have a strong daughter. We won’t know the effect on her psychological state until she wakes, but so far, she’s physically as healthy as she was before. The only thing I would recommend is, be as close as you need to, but she can’t wake up to a crowd of grown ups hovering over her, try to make it seem normal to her. I’ll check in once she’s awake.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

Pilar nodded “We’ll make sure that she knows where there.” She said and looked at Derek “Let’s go see her and we can sit with her for the time being.” She said and looked back at Marshall “Thank you Drake. I appreciate all you have done for Otana and us.”
