It was great news. Mostly. There was an element of it that was sure to be frustrating and she was already bracing herself for Bob’s response. And she wouldn’t even blame him either! The situation they had arrived to find was hardly what they had expected, and yet both of them were making the best of it.

Dira gave the security posted at the airlock a nod of her head. While it might not have been necessary to have guards posted while docked at Fleet HQ, the ship was minimal access only, not only because of it’s rough shape, but because the less people aboard, the less the engineering team had to worry whenever they had to do some drastic action to a system.

Stepping on to the Ogawa, she had to admit that she didn’t come here much and that it was by choice. One, she didn’t want to be in the way, and two, it didn’t feel like her ship, her new home… yet. Or she guessed it never would now. How odd.

Moving through the ship, she entered Engineering, her ebony eyes quickly searching for her quarry.

Bob was standing over the “pool table” type computer console that dominated the central part of Main Engineering, very focused on whatever it was he was looking at. It was the only computer display in the entire area that seemed to be in one piece; there were several service panels open where engineering team members were inspecting isolinear chips one at a time and replacing them.

A two-tone alarm sounded, which Dira was trained to recognize as a warning that there was a critical failure with the warp core about to take place. The isolation door promptly started descending as well, though nobody on either side of it seemed to change their routine in any way. Ordinarily this would be the kind of thing that would cause people to run out of Engineering as quickly as possible…

Luckily for Dira, the calm from the other crew told her it wasn’t something to be worried about, but still she couldn’t help but quirk an eyebrow.

“It’s not that one either,” Bob said to nobody in particular. “We’ll try thirty six alpha next.” A couple of button presses, and the door began to open. He still hadn’t taken note of Dira.

Looking behind her, she smirked slightly before venturing forward. “Hate to interrupt the, uh… fun? But what if I told you you could stop fishing for critical errors and not have to rebuild a ship from seeming scratch?” Though she had kept a straight face, he knew her too well not to notice that her eyes had lit up and she was excited.

He looked up at her and seemed entirely unimpressed by this news, at least for the first second or so. Then he started talking cautiously.

“Well, ordinarily, I’d assume that that would be a way to sugar coat some bad news about my career falling off of some new cliff, but you actually seem excited about whatever it is you’re about to say, so I assume you’re not trying to sell me a ground assignment?”

His career progression and whether or not it had been stalled was always gnawing at the back of his mind…

Dira broke into an open laugh and grinned at him. “Nah, I wouldn’t do that to you,” she said as she drew closer to him. “So… Captain Taylor and I just had a briefing with Fleet Command.” She leaned towards her friend and whispered. “We’re getting a new ship! A much bigger one. Brand new design and everything.” He dark eyes were lit up and she could honestly say that she was excited for what this would actually mean for them all.
