Brad turned his attention to the quarantined beds, waiting for the patients’ arrival. He, personally, was quite prepared to eradicate this fungus, no matter its level of sentience, because of the hazard it posed to others. Transporting it to an isolated planet where it could replicate to its own content was more complicated than it was worth.

Willow waited along withe the medical staff. She looked over at Cai and shook her head once indicating he should stay away where it was safe. She glanced at Brad.

”We may need to consider the sentience aspect…” she said. ”Remember, first do no harm.”

“However sentient the original fungus producing the spores we’re dealing with may be, the spores themselves infecting our people are at best a fetus. I have no problems performing as many abortions as we need to stop this outbreak,” Brad said, a hard look on his face.

“These aren’t symbionts, Will, they’re parasites.”

About that time the shimmering hum of the transporters happened, phasing in the three infected family members into their quarantine.

GM Wombat

Jenyfer agree, to some extent. They certainly needed to place the crew above all else. But the ‘other’, be it fungus or some type of sentient being, was still something they had to take into account. “I just want it on the record that we try and see if its sentient and, if so, see how we can save and transplant it. If it is a being known in this region, and we merely wipe it out, wouldn’t it possibly cause issues with other races we come across in the future? I know there’s little margin of anyone knowing, or caring, for a fungus like being. But if they are known, and live here, can we afford that kind of mark on the Federation?” Maybe it was a long shot, but then again, the last thing she wanted was some other brutal, less fungal, creature coming for them because they had killed its friend or ally.

“I’m not going within 50 meters of the origin of those damned spores,” Brad said, somewhat testily. “Not even in a hermetically sealed environmental suit with two redundant sources of oxygen.”

He was, truthfully, mere seconds away from calling the Engineer who’d found the damn thing and ordering him to kill it with fire, and didn’t really understand why the other two officers (and doctors) in the room with him (one of which had also been affected by the damn things) were apparently hell-bent on saving it so it could continue to infect others.

Jenyfer laid a hand on the Commander’s arm, not thinking. “Easy… I wouldn’t ask that of you. But if we can get it to leave the ship peacefully instead of gassing hundreds of our crewmates, kids and families, or worse, setting fire to it or something equally damaging to the station, isn’t it worth it?” She let go with a blush, realizing they didn’t know one another well enough for the touch she had given. “Sorry… but we need to find a way to get it to leave with the least amount of damage to crew and ship. And if it doesn’t work, we gas the hell out of it and flush it out the ventilation ducts. Agreed?” She glanced around at the others before resting her gaze back on the Chief.

“Sentient or not, it’s a fungus. What are the odds it’s even ambulatory? It’ll have to be removed from wherever it is one way or another regardless, I’m just saying engineering shouldn’t feel a need to be particularly gentle in doing it.”

Jenyfer nodded in apology. “You are right. Sorry. It invaded and it could have been a lot worse. It needs to go. I have to remember that sometimes, just because it’s alive, doesn’t mean it’s necessary.” She sighed. “Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn’t have been something other than a scientist. I know, in my head and gut, what needs to be done. But sometimes…” she shrugged. “Well I guess sometimes I get too soft and wonder if I am in the right field.” She let out a small laugh but it wasn’t a pleasant sound. “I wonder if I have Betazed someplace back in my lineage somewhere.”

“In fairness, you’re not often confronted with the front-line realities of an infection, are you?” Brad asked. Most virologists he’d met over the last 30 years had rarely left the lab, and were quite content to simply receive and analyze samples without ever seeing where they’d come from.

She was pretty sure he hadn’t meant to be mean in the comment, but Jenyfer felt the sting, none the less. “No, I haven’t.” She then smiled and straightened up a bit. “But that’s why I asked for this posting. This is a chance to see where and how and why. And most especially the who. You are right. Virologists don’t usually see the front lines. And while that sometimes helps in the lab, because we aren’t bothered by cries, or sights that would distract us, sometimes I think it hurts us as well. Seeing how it affects someone, seeing how the symptoms come on, seeing how it spreads from one to another, I think it could make a difference.”

She glanced up and nodded to Zeaner came back in.

After making sure the family and particularly the young girl had been seen to, Ever made her away across the medical bay to the Virologist and CMO she had meet that had started this afternoons event in the hallway that seemed a lifetime ago now. Passing her hand across the top of her suit absently as though she wanted to smooth back her hair, Ever’s thoughts circled around the conversation of the other two doctor’s emotions regarding the spores. Remembering at the last second to observe human culture, she pretended she knew nothing of their plans involving her and possibly an unnamed Vulcan. “Dr. Walker, I presume you are feeling better? We have patient zero quarantined now. And the virus is under control, are there any new developments?”

Lt Commander Ever Zeanar, CoP

Jenyfer let out a sigh of relief. “I’m so glad. I’ll let you two talk. I’m going to make sure we have enough serum to pass out and see to everyone’s inoculation. Excuse me.” She nodded once more and stood up to see to the antidote.

The XO and the Chief of Security turned the corner to the corridor with the Infirmary, still wary of any infected who might be lurking. Zoi was glad to finally walk through those doors with Dira safe and sound. Maybe now they would have some answers, but she didn’t see the Captain right away.

Haven, CoS

Feeling much more in tune with everything again (though she could admit that there was still a small edge of fuzziness present), Dira, took in the scene. “Things seem to be calming down out there. Where are we at?”

Commander Myqian, XO

“Lt. Lynset is handling production of the antidote, we’ve got an intrepid engineer collecting the fungus among us, and an ever-decreasing number of affected people,” Brad reported succinctly. “Most of those who’ve already received the antidote are back to relative normal, with a few lingering tics, in my case.”

His expression turned into a grimace as he realized this would probably result in at least one conversation with a member of the Psychiatry department.

“I suppose the next step is figuring out exactly how the hell said psychoactive fungus got to where we found it in the first place, but that’s a science department question.”
