Out of habit Tija Aizala was dressed in her Starfleet uniform when she arrived in front of Captain Taylor’s office after having dropped of her belongings at her quarters and freshened up. As always her copper hair was tied back in a neat ponytail, leaving her Bajoran earring and the thin white scar, that ran along the hairline on the right side of her face from temple to ear, clearly visible. She wasn’t entirely sure if the Captain was indeed the person she should report to or not. But it seemed the most logical thing. So after taking a deep breath, she pressed the chime and waited.

“Come in!” Willow’s voice called from inside the room. She raised her eyebrows as she surveyed the woman before her. She didn’t recognise her. “Can I help you?” She asked.

Stopping a few steps in front of the Captain’s desk, Tija replied, “I’m Lieutenant Tija Aizala. I was the Chief Medical Officer on the Academy ship the USS Challenger. After the last mission the ship’s Counsellor highly … recommended that I go on medical leave for a while. That is why I was send here. And if I understood it correctly, Command thinks the Ogawa would be a good place for me to stay afterwards, Ma’am.” Her posture was straight and she sounded curt, but not necessarily unfriendly.

Willow watched her then gestured to the chair in front of the desk. “Have a seat, please.” She offered and then turned her chair as if to stand. “Can I offer you a drink?”

Tija walked over to the indicated chair and sat down, her back still perfectly straight, her legs crossed at the knees and her hands folded in her lap. There was a brief moment of hesitation before she said, “A peppermint would be nice. Thank you, Captain.”

Standing the red haired woman moved to the replicator to get the drink. She replicated a peach ice tea for herself and returned. She put the tea in front of Tija and sat.

“So tell me, what’s your medical speciality.” She asked.

Wrapping her hands around the tea cup, Tija replied, “Officially: Emergency medicine and trauma surgery. But I also have quite some knowledge when it comes to so called alternative medicine. Where I grew up we didn’t have much access to most forms of modern medicine and I learned as a child how to treat injuries, infections and other ailments herbs and whatever else was available to us. Later during my studies while I was still on Bajor I kept a focus on that. And even at the Academy, even though I decided to go in a different direction for my speciality.” Her eyes became unfocused as she thought about why she had made that decision and about the recommendation from Counsellor Korczak to switch fields.

Willow listened and her expression softened slightly ”I have some friends who do dabble still in alternative medicines for various reasons.” she smiled and elaborated, ”I was a doctor before command,”

A small smile appeared on Tija’s face at Taylor’s words. It always felt good when someone didn’t outright push her knowledge in alternative medicine aside as if it was all non-sense and did ore harm than good. Which was ridiculous, of course. Focusing her gaze on the Captain once more, she asked, “What is your speciality?”

~Lt. Tija Aizala, Doctor (med leave)

Willow smiled ”Cardiology, in particular pediatric cardiology.” she looked wistful, ”I don’t get a chance to practice much now.”

“I can imagine,” Tija said softly and then took a sip of her tea. After a moment of silence, she asked, “Do you miss it?”

The captain considered the question a moment, tilting her head slightly and sipping her drink. She frowned. ”In many ways yes…i miss the simplicity of it, even if it isn’t simple.” she laughed lightly. ”Sorry I know that sounds oxymoronic.”
