Brad sent out the message the night before to Lt. Cmdr. O’Keefe, Lt. Cmdr. Zeaner, Lt. Bonner and Lt. Marshall, inviting them to lunch the next day. He’d secured a private dining room in one of the Starbase’s restaurants.

He’d only met one while inadvertently intoxicated, had an unhealthy work relationship with two of the others, and hardly ever saw the fourth. And a working lunch was much more in touch with his style than a summons to a briefing.

Alexis appeared shortly after. She was early, but felt like she was late. She had had to take Zeus back to her quarters before this meeting. Therefore she was later than she wanted to be. She entered the private dinning area behind a waitress who took her drink order, coffee. She hesitated not sure where she should sit. Her usual PaDD in hand, containing anything and everything thing from medical journals, patient reports, research notes, to schedules.

Drake walked in not long after. He was somewhat uncomfortable, knowing his relationship with Walker, this meeting had so much rotten potential. He ordered a coffee, wishing he could order pure caffeine sometimes.

“Good afternoon, both of you,” Brad said. He was standing near the back of the room, at a large round table set for five people, holding a glass of iced tea.

“We’re still waiting on a couple of people before we’ll get started.”

“Good afternoon Dr Walker.” Alexis replied to his greeting. She took her coffee and then sat at the table. “Taking a break from those back logs, or finally get them done?”

“More or less done, everything left is just a ‘sign and submit’ thing. Personnel reviews, physical exam acknowledgements, that sort of thing,” Brad said. “I’ll admit, I’m kind of excited to see the outside of my office for once.”

“I don’t envy you the paperwork involved in your job.” Drake joked.

“Imagine the Hell it would have been three hundred years ago when it was actually still paper,” Brad joked back. “Now I just have to worry about ocular strain instead of actually cutting myself open.”

Alexis looked horrified for a moment. “Can you imagine having all those medical books lining shelves and having to go through each book without a computer interface to weed out all the fluff? Or having to wait for a printed copy of the latest medical journals to be ‘mailed’ to you?” She shuddered. She would be so bored, and probably get into trouble doing experiments rather than waiting on finding out the newest procedures that had been published. Oh those must have been dark times in medicine.

“Well, it could have been worse. Most of them at least had indices so you could find what you wanted in a particular book,” Brad said. “Also, you’d get a better workout reaching up for them and hefting them down and around than you do picking up a PaDD, so there’s that…”
