Achilleas found himself once again at the gym. He had done quite a bit of weight training with a bit of cardio last time and decided to focus strictly on running this time. With that thought in mind he found an unoccupied treadmill and began to run. Lately he’d been feeling uneasy and had a harder time focusing, so his was goal was to just keep running until his mind went blank and only stop when he couldn’t go on.

After a few minutes the treadmill beside Achilleas also became occupied. The figure, dressed in purple leggings and a baggy oversized white vest too and trainers, bright red short hair pushed back with a headband turned and grinned at the scientist as she started a slow warm up jog. “Lieutenant.” Willow said and nodded her head in greeting.

It took a few moments for the presence and words to jolt Achilleas out of his blank minded state. His rhythm got thrown off but he quickly adjusted before he looked over and nodded in return. “Captain.” He said as he tried to cover a despondent tremor to his voice.

Willow frowned slightly as she jogged, casting the man a slight sideways look. “You know I have been told both anecdotally and professionally that exercise is suppose to release endorphins, endorphins make you happy. So people who exercise tend to be happier…forgive the observation but you don’t seem very happy Lieutenant.” she said mostly looking ahead of herself as the treadmill picked up pace.

Achilleas kept at the pace he was running at. At another time and with a different mood, he’d match Willow’s pace and joke around with her but he didn’t have the wherewithal to do so. “I’m not… unhappy Captain. I wish I could say that I was happy though. And as an aside endorphins don’t necessarily make a person happy but it can make you euphoric. It can also help you blank your mind and forget your worries for a minute.”

Raising her eyebrows the woman continued to pick up pace. “Well we have a lot of road as it were and I have time if you want to talk about what is making you feel not unhappy but not happy.” she could relate to the feeling, absently she flexed her left hand feeling a missing weight there like a heavier one in her chest.

Achilleas took a deep breath and let it out as part sigh of frustration and part something else. “Things have been understandably busy after the fiasco with that fungus and the all hand cleanup of the starbase. Riani… I mean, Ensign Iyun and I have been so busy that we haven’t had a chance for any time together. We’ve been on different shifts to make sure there’s no conflict of interest or favoritism issues, we thought about living for a moment but that seems a bit rushed with where our relationship is, and I’d likely be getting up and out the door when she’s ready to crash. So while in my head I can understand that this is part of the job and when things settle down it’ll likely work out fine… I just feel uneasy. Like a part of me I’ve gotten so used to has been ripped away. This is my first time loving someone romantically and I didn’t realize how much the absence of someone can hurt.” He smiled in a way that wasn’t really a smile. He increased his speed, though not to match the Captain’s but just to make it harder on himself.

Willow considered the man quietly as she broke into the full on jog. “Then why not adjust the schedules to allow you to have some shifts together. I asked you to ensure fair treatment but not to make yourselves miserable. That’s not fair either.”

Achilleas slowed to a stop as Willow’s words hit him. “Not fair either.” He mumbled. He shook his head to clear his thoughts before he resumed running again. “I mean, it wasn’t as if we were planning for everything to reach this point. Time just hasn’t worked in our favor. I think there’s a fair bit of awkwardness involved too though. The incident with the fungal infection sure made for an embarrassing situation.”

CSO Petrakos

Willow’s cheeks burned slightly, by running exertion or other it wasn’t clear. “Yes.” she said slightly stiffly. “It certainly did. At least you both can be thankful you didn’t hold court in the middle of the promenade.” she said then chuckled slightly. “Perhaps there’s a way to use that embarrassment to your advantage. Maybe organise another tea party but this time of a more romantic than manic sort?” she asked.

Achilleas shook his head. “I’m not sure doing another tea party this soon is a great idea. Not that we got nearly as manic as some of the other crew did, but I have a feeling that the lack of inhibition on both of our parts would just be a horrible reminder.” He sighed before increasing his jog speed another notch. “We should be on the new ship soon, so maybe I can make a date out of somewhere unexplored on there.”

Willow nodded. “The schematics indicated a few lovely areas to walk and a nice lounge.” she said as she jogged. “But let me tell you a secret. After so long on base I’d take an old Klingon battle cruiser half falling apart.” She grinned.

Achilleas chuckled in response, which was the first time he’d really smiled in awhile. “The starbase isn’t bad but it sure isn’t ours. Being a DH has the perk of me not sharing quarters with anyone, but Ensign Iyun has had a roommate this whole time. Kind of limits our options a little bit.”

CSO Petrakos

Willow nodded. Yes, it most definitely wasn’t theirs. “I would imagine so. Shouldn’t be long now however. “ she said as she broke into the full run of her programmed regime, she ran for a few minutes then the machine began to slow again and enter cool down. “I hear the gym on the new ship is going to be first class.” she said slightly more breathlessly.

Achilleas started his own cool down. He’d been haphazardly running for a bit before Willow had joined him and his legs and chest were aching. “That’d be nice, a new gym. I hear there will be a hot tub too. That sounds really good right about now.” He chuckled.
