Zoi was not all that artsy. Her mind was mostly analytical and practical. She watched Dira begin her work for several minutes before she began to work on her own. Height, she needed height. Castles were often on top of some great cliff. Wether she could do that within the art medium chosen? That remained to be seen. But she thought perhaps she should get the base and the bottom most part of the castle built up to give the structure a solid base on which to stand.

At Dira’s idle voice, Zoi looked up to smile at her. “I suppose so. It is very zen. I do like zen gardens… you know, the ones where you can use the rake to make designs?”

“I’ve heard of them, yes,” she said with a smile. “I’ve found over the years that it doesn’t matter what creative endeavour you gravitate towards, the ones that serve you the best ore the ones that are most immersive. For some it’s music, or pottery. Others, gardening or weaving. Just… so many endless ways of examining both the world around you and your own inner world.”

Dira stood up and stepped back, examining her packed pile. Then she reached for a small shovel with a narrow end and began to gently scrape away the sand, as if to reveal a treasure.

“I like gardening too. Getting your hands in the dirt, pulling out the unwanted vegetation, growing something beautiful or functional or both. Perhaps I should start a vegetable garden in the Arboretum? They have community beds available. It would be so interesting to start a brand new garden from scratch. No amending the soil and doing so many tests to make sure its up to scratch before planting. I wonder if the person who is in charge of the Arboretum will have seasons?”

Haven, CoS

“Maybe. Can’t hurt to ask. In my experience on ships, usually they keep it at a middle-level temperate climate if they are going to open it up to others. Otherwise they tend to be more tropical green spaces,” Dira said idly as she continued to scrape away sand to carve out large shapes, as if she were loosely sketching, but the overall impression was hard to define. It looked like a central blob with an extension on either side.

Zoi added another heap of sand to her pile and pulled off the excess on one side. Then she added another heap. Her mind worked in a different direction than her hands. At least her deep thoughts. While her brain directed her hands to shape up the sand and make a corner of the castle, her thoughts were on the potential of a garden. “Perhaps a cut flower garden?” She asked mildly, letting her mouth run away with her thoughts. “They do look so pretty and everyone could enjoy fresh flowers they cut themselves. Great for pollinators.”

Haven, CoS

“True, though not likely to find much pollinators on a starship. But that makes it easy to grow without worries,” Dira said, her mind tending towards practical considerations these days given her mind was on operational matters so much of the time. “I think that would be a lovely idea. Flowers are always lovely in my opinion. What sorts of flowers would you grow? Any favourites?”

Using the sides of her her brown hands, Dira gently began to carve loose indentations on the side pieces, much like fingers, but the placement was wrong. As she kept going she began to hum very softly to herself.

Commander Myqian, XO

“Dahlia’s have to be my absolute favorite, but I also like buttercups, lilies, sunflowers, anemones, hibiscus, passion flowers, peonies, poppies, irises, and begonias. There are so many.” She said with a half laugh, sliding down the wall she had erected to the next corner to begin shaping it with her trowel. “I don’t like chaos though. I want them to be well arranged in the ground as much as I like arranging them in vases.”

Zoi shook her head as though telling someone they had disappointed her, before continuing to work, enjoying the soft melody Dira had begun to hum. For several minutes, she enjoyed that sound then asked, “What about you? Do you have a favorite?”

She glanced over with a serene smile. “My father as the most rambling garden that my mother started when they were still married. She pokes about in it now and again, since my father is hopeless with plants, but there are all these rambling vines with scented flowers and they are growing over all the arches and garden structures. The scent is everywhere but is very light, like you just brushed past someone with the most exquisite perfume,” Dira said, her tone suffused with pleasure.

Commander Myqian, XO

“Ooooh,” She said pleased as she contemplated an arched walkway of flowers woven over trellises. It would be so romantic. The smell and the shaded secret places..... perhaps she could light little alcoves with benches. Then she had to laugh at herself. Just how much of the Arboretum could she take over? It was an intriguing notion. “Wisteria is excellent for trellises, as are roses. Honeysuckle might be a bit too powerful a smell though it is excellent for trellising.” She continued musing as her hands worked to sculpt.
