Octavia had been looking forward to starting her educational term on the ship, she’d finally been accepted both on the Owie as some of the crew called it and by the Academy, she was even more excited because her first lesson was Immunology! Out of all the tutors, Lt Solal seemed the most enthusiastic abut taking he ron as their student. With Study PaDD in hand, she entered the Lab which he had told her to meet. She was early of course because which keen Medical student wouldn’t be early for their class and instead of having to fight twenty other young adults for the teaches attention she was it, number 1, the top the middle and the bottom of the class.

She found herself a seat and set out her things on the workbench and waited. Today was a good day to learn!

Solal arrived in the lab several minutes after Octavia, having rushed here straight away after his shift for the day. Between today, and the day he’d agreed to teach Octavia, he had looked over the suggested teaching plans she had sent him, filling in his own information, things he thought were highly pertinent specifically to immunology on a spaceship. He quickly sat down, sorting out his notes, which he had hastily swiped off his desk in his quarters. “It was busy today,” He said, his French accent more apparent than usual. “But I am ready to teach,” He said, looking up to Raain as he settled, his notes in a neat, ordered pile.

Octavia quiet enjoyed his accent though she didn’t know if it was from a region on Vulcan or Earth, maybe she’d find out eventually. “Brilliant, did you get a chance to look at the training program? It made some sense to me but as the person learning and not teaching I figure you’d make more sense out of it.” She had read all of her terms lessons already, something at the academy she wouldn’t have been shown so she took some notes on what to expect before sending them off to her respective tutors. She sat on the edge of her seat, quiet literately ready to learn.

“I did look at it, yes,” said Solal. The training programs had certainly gotten better since he was a student, a fact he was glad to see. “It is a fantastic learning tool, though it may be aimed slightly higher than your current level. It will likely be more useful to you after a few of our lessons. And speaking of which, I assume you are already familiar with medical terminology?” He asked. It was definitely the first thing anyone should learn in the field of medicine, and considering he figured Octavia hadn’t just barely become a student, she would likely already have been taught the Greek and Latin roots from which humans derived their medical terms.

“Ofcourse! Its one of things we were often quizzed on in my first year, I’m not perfect but I remember most of them,” She explained, quizzes were a big part of her previous tutors homework often given them twenty medical terms which they would have to research their meaning, origin and how they would be used in a sentence. once they even had to come up with a poem for them. “What is on today’s agenda?” She asked assuming that the Lieutenant would have lily added his own touch to the training program.

“Let’s start by testing your knowledge,” said Solal. “Figure out what exactly you know which pertains directly to the field of immunology.” Pulling up a page from his notes, he began asking her questions about the immune system’s makeup. Things like ‘what kind of cell is first on the scene when a bacteria invades?’ and ‘what are some known illnesses for which there are not yet vaccines?’. ‘what is each cell of the immune system and what are their purposes?’ There were several other similar questions, which he asked one at a time.

Octavia answered the questions as they came to her. “I think its called, Phagocytes. They recognize when something enters your body that doesn’t belong there and jump to work. They destroy the invaders using a process called phagocytosis.” She was sure she had answered that one right, “The first one I can think is Bolian Schistosomiasis and Ferengi ear worm and finally “The two types of lymphocytes are B-cells, which make antibodies that attack bacteria and toxins, and T-cells, which help destroy infected or cancerous cells. Killer T-cells are a subgroup of T-cells that kill cells that are infected with viruses and other pathogens or are otherwise damaged” She smiled, “How’d I do? you went easy on me.”
