“Dahlia’s have to be my absolute favorite, but I also like buttercups, lilies, sunflowers, anemones, hibiscus, passion flowers, peonies, poppies, irises, and begonias. There are so many.” She said with a half laugh, sliding down the wall she had erected to the next corner to begin shaping it with her trowel. “I don’t like chaos though. I want them to be well arranged in the ground as much as I like arranging them in vases.”

Zoi shook her head as though telling someone they had disappointed her, before continuing to work, enjoying the soft melody Dira had begun to hum. For several minutes, she enjoyed that sound then asked, “What about you? Do you have a favorite?”

She glanced over with a serene smile. “My father as the most rambling garden that my mother started when they were still married. She pokes about in it now and again, since my father is hopeless with plants, but there are all these rambling vines with scented flowers and they are growing over all the arches and garden structures. The scent is everywhere but is very light, like you just brushed past someone with the most exquisite perfume,” Dira said, her tone suffused with pleasure.

“Ooooh,” She said pleased as she contemplated an arched walkway of flowers woven over trellises. It would be so romantic. The smell and the shaded secret places..... perhaps she could light little alcoves with benches. Then she had to laugh at herself. Just how much of the Arboretum could she take over? It was an intriguing notion. “Wisteria is excellent for trellises, as are roses. Honeysuckle might be a bit too powerful a smell though it is excellent for trellising.” She continued musing as her hands worked to sculpt.

Dira grinned and gazed at Zoi for a few moments, watching her work with a certain amount of delight. “While I know a little bit, I have to admit I don’t know a great deal about flowers. I know a few from growing up and I can probably pick out the odd Terran one having spent enough time on Earth, but the rest is a mystery to me. But I’m happy to learn from you,” she said warmly as she carved the upper ball of her sculpture, scrapping away the cool sand to form a protrusion from the centre that tapered as it moved out.

Try as she might, she couldn’t get the walls in the four corners to be perfectly perpendicular. She sighed as she examined her work. It would have to do. She could pretend it was meant to be more abstract than perfect. Then again, she didn’t think Dira was looking for perfection from her. Happy enough with that in mind, she started working on scooping out the middle to make the courtyard, careful not to take too much from the sides and risk collapse.

She smiled at Dira, happy in the moments they were creating with one another here. It had been an excellent first date idea. “Well, I will be glad to teach. Flowers and gardening are two things my mother finds most calming. I have a lot of happy memories in gardens with her at various facilities and our homes over the years. I could almost always guarantee that she could come back to lucidity when we were working in the garden together.” Her voice faltered a little and she took a deep and steadying breath before turning her attention back to her castle construct.

Dira smiled deeply at Zoi, feeling the happiness the memory brought forth. “Those are special moments to have, Zoi. Hold on to them. They’ll always be there for you, even if one day she is not,” she said gently.

As she continued to carve, Myqian stepped back for a moment to get a different perspective on her creation. But this point it was loosely starting to be obvious that it was the underside view of a bird in flight, it’s wings tipped back at the apex of a flap. “I always considered myself especially lucky to to have both parents so strongly in my life. Even after the separation and divorce they just seemed to have their sh*t together and cared about each other, and me, enough to not fight over inconsequential things” She glanced over at Zoi with a smirk. “I still tease them about how unusual a couple they are in my field. Well, former field I guess I should say.”
