“Long ago, on a barren world born of ice and snow, where mountains reared like giants above the horizon and footsoldier glaciers dotted land with chakani crystals teasing their sides… few people dared to venture from the safety of subterraneous caves.” A young woman leaned forward, her unnaturally ambered eyes alight with her ancestors’ flame. “They were leery of the surface - convinced a step would submit them to the giants’ caprice - and even leerier of the stars.”

“They were not cowardly people. No. Blood feuds and eternal battle left them callous and as obdurate as the land. But, they were wary of all things unfamiliar.” She gestured to a nearby window where the stars lay exposed to them. “All things they could not control.” Her antennae swayed in sync with the rise and fall of her voice. They were, in their right, bearers of the immortal flame. “These fears inhibited them. They turned people to stone - unable to accept strangers into their care, unable to love what didn’t have two antennae and deadly stare.” She reached out and poked her companion’s antennae, then his nose, with the faintest of smile hogging her lips. “Unlike us, they were prisoners of their ambivalence.”

“What changed?” Her companion - a young boy whose pale ocean skin and cloudy eyes were reminiscent of his lineage - tilted his head curiously to his mother. “Chavan always said ‘time has a way of changing people’. Did they grow out of it?”

“Mm.. your Chavan is right. But that wouldn’t make for an interesting story, would it?” Siaqir grinned and brushed a strand of ivory hair from her son’s cheek. “Time is passive - gentle and uninhibited by extrinsic force - and it was never a good motivator for Andorians. We are a tenacious people who prefer to do things our own way. The thought of intermingling with a new environment and heaven forbid new people, was abhorrent.”

“-I don’t mean to interrupt, but..” A young pink- human turned to the glance over his shoulder and afforded them a quirked grin. “Your new home is over yonder,” he clicked his tongue and jabbed a hand at the fore facing window. He dropped them to impulse speed. “ETA to Starbase 157.. 15 minutes.”

“What d’you say, Zee?” Siaqir wiggled his nose. “Do you want to go take a look at the Starbase?”

“I thought we were going to the Og..” he struggled with Ogawa’s name “..Oggie. I’ll call it Oggie.” Zahir’s furrowed brow quickly melted into a smile. “I thought we were going to the Oggie? Why are we at the Starbase?”

“Well, the Ogawa recently had an.. upgrade.” She smiled. “So, they’re still hanging around the starbase until everything’s ready to go. Us included.”

“Okay.” Zahir was willing to accept that answer, and without missing a beat, he added: “I wanna see it!” He didn’t hesitate to climb from his mother’s lap, slipping to the floor with a soft thud! Toddling as his short, seven-year-old legs would allow, he made his way to the pilot with alarming speed. “Life? Please?” Zahir held his arms out to the man.

“Sure, bud.” He hoisted Zahir onto his lap and tossed his mother a question in the guise of a smile. He received a short nod in return. “Do you want to help me drive her in?”

“Me?” Zahir leaned forward, careful not to touch any buttons, and took a long look at the starbase. “But I’m not a pilot.”

“Well, let’s change that.” He offered a hand to the boy. “Consider today your first day, honorary pilot Zahir.”

A wide grin spread across the boy’s lips as he shook the pilot’s finger. “Let’s do this!”

“I like your energy, pilot.” He adjusted Zahir on his lap and gestured to the console. “Do you know what to say?”

“Uh.. Starbase 157, per..mission to dock?” Zahir scrunched his brows, repeating similar words he’d heard on their first trip from Andoria to the USS Sionann.

“Attaboy. Now press that button there,” he guided Zahir’s hand to the panel, “and repeat those words. Ready?”

“Ready.” The boy took in a big breath, threw a look at his mom, and pressed the button. =^=Starbase 157, this is the..=^= He looked to the pilot, who mouthed ‘Morrigan.’ =^+…Morr-igan, can we have permission to dock?=^=

There was a moment of - what could be assumed confused - silence. Surely, the starbase replied. =^=Pilot, you sound awfully young. Did the Sionann find the fountain of youth?=^=

=^=I wish,=^= the pilot returned. =^=We’re just here to transfer an officer and her kid to the Owie. Permission to dock?=^=

=^=Shame! I was hoping for an anti-grey remedy..=^= There was a slight pause. =^=Permission granted. Good to see you Morrigan.=^=

It wasn’t long before Morrigan became Starbase 157 and 157 became the Ogawa. Siaqir had her reservations about the sudden change of environment, but Zahir seemed to be taking it well. By the time they boarded Ogawa, he’d found a place in his mother’s arms, his head rested on her shoulders and his eyes closed in a quick ‘power nap’. It’d been a long day for him, but Siaqir’s was just beginning.

Careful not to disturb her sleeping companion, Siaqir made her way through metal doors and into the hallways. Ogawa was a far cry from the station she’d served on prior, but with a destination in mind, she embarked on what she hoped would be a quick journey.

Octavia was up late, she was researching for her paper to submit to Lieutenant Junior Grade Solal Segal so he could mark it and give her entry grade for Immunology, one of the two preferred choices and hopefully specialisations she was going to commit to. In the secondary sickbay, she thought she would be left uninterrupted especially with everything being so quiet on the ship, that and there hadn’t been many visiting the sickbay recently.

  • Crewman Octavia Raain

Qir didn’t expect to glance up and find herself standing before the secondary sickbay, but something lured her there. Was it curiosity? Anticipation? Perhaps the incessant thud cracking at her ribs every time it passed through her thoughts? She wasn’t sure. But there was no way she could leave without taking a look. Just one.

Naturally, Isyme gravitated through its titanium doors and paused just within the reception area. She let her gaze wander until it landed on a figure shrouded in part by the shadow of a half-dormant sickbay. Knitting her brows together, Qir pressed a kiss to her son’s head and wove her way toward them. The closer she wandered, the clearer their work became. Against the risk of startling them, Qir lingered a few metres back, and offered a soft:

“Need a little company?”
