Touching the scar on her hairline absentmindedly with her fingertips, Aizala took a deep breath and then asked, “Before we go into any of the details about how this might all work, do you have any questions for and/or about me?”

~Lt. Tija, Doctor (med leave)

“So I understand you’re a qualified emergency medicine and trauma surgeon specialist, and looking to transition away from that due to a psychological issue that I’m not going to pry into. I understand the desire, if not the exact circumstances, but what field are you looking to work in once you’re cleared to return to duty?” Brad asked.

Her lips pursed and her brows pulled slightly together, Aizala was silent for a moment and then said with a sigh, “That is the question. To be quite hones, Sir, I don’t know. When I chose my field of expertise, I went with emergency medicine and trauma surgery because of what happened to my sister. She-” Aizala’s voice faltered and she had to take a deep breath before she could continue. “She fell to her death when I was young. I saw her fall,” she said in an almost detached voice. “After what happened at the end of my last posting, it was suggested that I consider switching fields. I think they are right that it might be beneficial for me. I just don’t know what to do instead.”

~Lt. Tija, Doctor (med leave)

“Hm,” Brad said. “A problem, but a good one to have. Was there ever another field that interested you while studying?” He wasn’t qualified in neurology, but he’d taken a couple of courses on it, both when first getting his degree, and then later during one of his repeat visits to Starfleet Medical.

“I have always been interested in so called alternative medicine, but just like my actual specialities that probably hits too close to home to fully switch into that field,” Aizala pondered. “While I was at the Academy I generally liked the surgical fields. Again maybe to close to what I’ve been doing till now. I also found gynaecology and otorhinolaryngology fairly interesting,” she said thoughtfully. “But I feel rather uncertain, to be honest.”

~Lt. Tija, Doctor (med leave)

“Well the last one’s probably not that common on a starship, but we could definitely use a gynecologist on staff,” Brad said. “What do you mean when you say ‘alternative’ medicine? Traditional Bajoran remedies?”

Aizala nodded and then said, “Yes, for the most part. The first medical training I received was from one of the women in the small town I grew up in after the Occupation. She not only was one of the people who made sure I wouldn’t starve, but she also taught me everything she knew about herbes and natural remedies. And she knew a lot. And even during my medical training in Ilvia I continued to study those things and after joining Starfleet I made it a personal project so to speak to learn about all those things on other planets and in other cultures. Like acupuncture on Earth.” She brushed a nonexistent loose strand back behind her ear and while doing so touched her scar ever so briefly.

~Lt. Tija, Doctor (med leave)

Brad nodded. “Did pharmacology ever draw your interest at the Academy? It seems like a natural field for you, with your knowledge of compounds and their interactions with the humanoid physiology.”

Cmdr Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

“I only ever took the mandatory classes in pharmacology, but yes, I did find it interesting. And you are right that it would build on the knowledge I’ve acquired over the years,” Aizala nodded and then hesitated slightly, “I understood the recommendation to switch fields in such a way that it might be beneficial to me to do something that isn’t in some way connected to my childhood trauma. But I’m not sure to what extend and if that’s even possible.”

~Lt. Tija, Doctor (med leave)

“Especially considering your childhood trauma is what inspired you to become a healer in the first place,” Brad said. “I mean, I’m not a counselor, but that seems like it’s trying to set you up for failure.”

A single, slightly humourless laugh escaped her lips as Aizala shook her head a little. “You are probably right and I’m not entirely sure if complete avoidance is the right path. Maybe what they meant was that, for now, avoiding possible triggers would be good. And my official field of expertise is full of those,” she mused, her head tilted slightly to the side.

~Lt. Tija, Doctor (med leave)

“That’s certainly true,” Brad agreed. “Well, if nothing else you’re a qualified physician… how would you feel about handling basic clinical, non-emergency cases?”

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

Of course she knew that she was a qualified physician, yet hearing it took Aizala almost by surprise and brought a smile to her often stern face.” I would love that,” she replied emphatically.” Sitting around, twiddling my thumps … it puts me on edge.” Shaking her head and laughing a little, she added, “I guess it’s true that doctors sometimes are the worst patients.”

~Lt. Tija, Doctor (med leave)

“Excellent,” Brad said. “That sounds like a plan then, as soon as you’re cleared by the counselors to resume work, that’s what we’ll have you doing.” He offered a small smile to her.

“Welcome aboard the Ogawa, Dr. Tija.”
