SNIP

It was over. For the last couple days Jenyfer had been helping medical clear the people and ship of the fungus that had caused a strange storybook like ailment to several crewmembers. She still hadn’t any idea what the book was about, but it was downloaded in her quarters and she’d get to it eventually.

Till then, she thought it prudent to check off the rest of her boxes from the check in that never happened. Heading to Counseling, she wondered, and hoped, that the last few days would prove she was sane and safe and ready to be sent to work. Or was it, back to work? Either way, the young woman stepped into the Counseling suites and made her presence known. “I know my check in was for a few days ago,” she mentioned to the receptionist. “But I’ve been busy with those affected by the fungus. So I’m a little late.” She tried to smile and make light of it, but it fell flat. Joking wasn’t her strong suit.

OOC: Apologies, Have been busy helping my horses survive the polar vortex. Will respond with a proper post shortly. ((hope they are ok))

“Not a problem at all” replied the receptionist, “What with everyone having to check in everywhere,” she smiled wryly, “We’ve had no problem filling time slots. You’ve actually arrived during a bit of a lull, so I am pretty sure Dr. Howell is free at the moment but just let me check.” She sent a quick message to the COPsychiatry’s office and received an almost immediate reply in the positive. “The Doctor will see you now Lt.” She gestured toward the open doors of the Chief of Psychiatry’s office and smiled. “Go right ahead.”

Jenyfer nodded and murmured a thanks, seeming to think it almost ill spoken since no one seemed ‘thankful’ for seeing the shrink.

Moving to the open door, she tapped on the frame and glanced in. “Doctor Howell? Lieutenant JG Lynset. I believe I am overdue for my check in?” She smiled but it wasn’t quite enough to light up her eyes.

Elin smiled and stepped away from her desk to greet the Lt. “Welcome,” She said, “Can I offer you a drink from the replicator? I was about to get a cup of tea myself.”

Lt. Elin Howell, COPsych

“Hello,” Jen responded and stepped into room and let the door close behind her. “Just water, thank you. I hope I’m not intruding. I figured since things had finally calmed down, I should probably get my actual check ins done. Though seems a bit strange since everything that went on the last couple days.” She smiled with the hint of a laugh and moved towards one of the seats by the desk, not sure where else to sit.

Elin gestured toward two much more comfortable looking chairs sitting off to the side with a small table between them. “Why don’t we sit there? Sitting behind a desk makes me feel like a schoolteacher giving out detention.” She collected two glasses of water from the replicator, placed them on the table, and took a seat in one of the chairs. “Tell me about that if you don’t mind, It seems I just missed it by a hair joining the crew when I did. It has to have been quite an unsettling experience.”

Jenyfer moved to sit where indicated and nodded a thanks for the water. A small snicker rose as she remembered that day. “Well, I arrived to the Command Staff having taken the persona of some book characters. Crazy Queens, insane rabbits, and those who followed them. It was very bizarre. Turned out to be a fungus in the air conduits that spread from a child’s book in the living quarters. We got it under control, but it was strange and a bit unsettling, to be sure. It was some book about a Wonderful Land or something like that. And a girl named Alice. I have not read the book, and probably won’t for some time to come. It was all together mad and insane all in one.” She laughed and took a sip of the water before setting it back on the table. “You were lucky to have missed it. But I imagine those coming to you will have interesting tales to tell, for sure.”

“Ah! Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. That must have been an experience indeed. Some believe Lewis Carroll, the author, was using psychedelic drugs at the time of its writing. I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt and just think he had a wonderfully bizarre imagination, but I don’t think we will ever know for sure. Have you been able to shake off the experience? Or do you think it’s left a mark on you?”
