Elin sat at her office desk, taking a moment to absorb and process all the excitement of the last few days. All the new names, faces, and sights were finally starting to settle into their places in her mind and memory. She only had one check in left to do and so she sent a quick text based private message to Dr. Grayson via the computer to see if she could fit her in amongst all the other check ins going on at the moment. <Dr. Grayson, Please let me know when you can fit me in for an onboarding Psych Eval. Thank you.> She took a moment to appreciate the irony of the COPsych checking in for a Psych Eval and chuckled briefly to herself at the thought.

“See you in a couple of days,” Grayson replied with a smile, watching the officer in medical blue leave her office. She loved working with the crew and helping them overcoming their challenges, but she hated the paperwork that was required. One part of her brain urged her to get down to business on her notes while another part of her felt like procrastinating. Sitting down at her desk, she was about to begin her progress note when she was alerted to a message. Smiling and chuckling, she offered to no one in particular, “Saved by the bell.”

Reading the request for an evaluation, Mariah’s smile deepened. She had been looking for a distraction from paperwork, and it seemed like the universe had an interesting offer. It didn’t take her long to compose a reply: I’d be happy to see you now, if you have the time? I’d be most grateful as I much prefer chatting with people than doing paperwork. Just let me know what works best for you.

Elin’s reply came back almost immediately: I will be right there, thank you.

Not too many moments later a message came in from the Holographic receptionist ‘Heather’: Lt. Howell is here to see you Dr. Grayson, shall I send her in?”

Grayson exhaled in relief, grateful to be granted a respite from her notes. “Please,” the psychiatrist replied, still not quite used to the holographic receptionist. She didn’t doubt the holographic woman’s efficiency, but she was used to actual humanoids serving in administrative roles, particularly roles that involved not just handling sensitive information, but required someone to interact with those struggling with personal emotional issues.

Elin stepped into Dr. Grayson’s office a moment later. She smiled as she made eye contact with the Dr. “Dr. Grayson, my apologies for the short notice. Thank you for seeing me so quickly.”

Mariah waved away the apology with a smile and gestured for Howell to make herself comfortable in any one of the chairs in Grayson’s seating area. “I should thank you for presenting me with an opportunity to take a break from my notes. I love my work, but the red tape can be endless,”she added with a chuckle. “May I get you some thing from the replicator?”
