“That’s certainly true,” Brad agreed. “Well, if nothing else you’re a qualified physician… how would you feel about handling basic clinical, non-emergency cases?”

Chief of StaffOf course she knew that she was a qualified physician, yet hearing it took Aizala almost by surprise and brought a smile to her often stern face.” I would love that,” she replied emphatically.” Sitting around, twiddling my thumps … it puts me on edge.” Shaking her head and laughing a little, she added, “I guess it’s true that doctors sometimes are the worst patients.”

“Excellent,” Brad said. “That sounds like a plan then, as soon as you’re cleared by the counselors to resume work, that’s what we’ll have you doing.” He offered a small smile to her.
“Welcome aboard the Ogawa, Dr. Tija.”

Chief of StaffAizala felt her heart sink and her smile falter a little. Of course she knew that being cleared by the counsellor was necessary before she could return to duty, but she had hoped that she’d be allowed to do at least small things before than since she had no idea how long it would be otherwise before she would be allowed to do anything at all. But all she said was, “Thank you, Sir.”

“I saw that,” Brad said. “It’s not that I don’t want you around, Lord knows we’re going to need the help with the bigger crew all coming on board, but regulations won’t allow me to use a doctor that’s not cleared for work. Persuade a shrink you’re good to go, I’ll happily throw you at all the bright and shiny Ensigns wanting their paperwork checked off.”

Chief of Staff“I know,” Aizala replied with a nod. After taking a deep breath she added, “If I were in your position, I wouldn’t let my work either. So I understand and respect your decision. And hopefully it won’t be too long till I’ll be cleared for some light duty at least.” Smiling a little, she added, “Thank you, Sir. Is there anything else we should talk about right now?”

“Nothing pressing,” Brad said with a half-shrug. “Except the hours you want to keep once you’re cleared?”

“I don’t have any preferences. I’m happy to work any shift and as many hours as you need me or want me to,” Aizala replied without missing a beat. “Like most doctors I specialised, but I always worked when and wherever I was needed,” she finished matter-of-factly.
