Viasse skimmed over Tija’s medical file before resting the PaDD facedown on the biobed. Veering her undivided attention to Aizala, Viasse canted her head slightly to the right and listened. “I’m glad to hear you’re working with Doctor Howell,” a warm smile played across her lips, “if anyone can offer sound advice, it’s her. Everything you’ve mentioned – grounding techniques, counselling visits, natural remedies – suggest you don’t need a lecture about mental health. So, I’ll spare you the headache.” She paused and gestured to the PaDD. “I would like to briefly touch on your history if that’s all right?”

“No, I guess not,” Aizala nodded. “Though it took a full fledged panic attack for me to really realise that I need to work through my childhood trauma,” she admitted with a slightly self-conscious expression. “And please feel free to ask any question you have.”

Once she earned the doctor’s consent, Viasse continued, “I noticed you fractured your wrist and ribs four years ago. Are you experiencing any residual effects?” She figured Tija would’ve mentioned them if she did, but Viasse wouldn’t be doing her job if she didn’t ask.

Aizala shook her head. “In the beginning my wrist would easily feel stiff or sore, but it’s been over two years since I noticed any discomfort. And it’s not my dominate hand, so I never do any extended and strenuous work with it. As for my ribs, they haven’t bothered me even once since,” she replied without hesitation. Even though she was still trying to become more comfortable talking about herself, she did appreciate Viasse’s thoroughness.

Viasse noticed the discomfort tainting Aizala’s aura. She thought to mention it, but the risk of worsening her troubles trumped Viasse’s urge to ease them. She instead opted for a calm front. “That’s music to my ears,” she hummed and lifted the tricorder. “I’m going to run a quick scan,” she went through the motions, “unless something pressing comes up, you’ll be out of here in no time.”

“Of course,” Aizala replied with a small smile and sat perfectly still as Viasse scanned her.

Running a quick scan, Viasse glanced past the tricorder to Tija. “If you don’t mind my meddling,” another lopsided grin, “what’s your speciality?” A comfortable silence consumed her as she waited both for Tija’s answer and scan results.

The tricorder would show that Aizala was generally in good health. There was slight tension in her neck, shoulders and upper back. But other than that all her vitals were well within the norm for a Bajoran woman her age; with her blood pressure being on the low end of that spectrum.

When Viasse asked about her speciality, Aizala involuntarily bowed her her head and closed her eyes for a short moment. Lifting her head again she said steadily and in an almost detached way, “You could say I’m in between specialities at the moment. My speciality used to be trauma surgery and emergency medicine and I have a lot of training in so called alternative medicine. I’m thinking about switching either to gynaecology or pharmacology.”
