Elin looked thoughtful for a moment. “It’s certainly a bit of a change for me but I am looking at is as a bit of a new start in life, or at least a new chapter. I am already in love with the new facilities but that’s only a part of it. I’ve always had a need to keep learning and space offers a never ending classroom.”

Dira smiled warmly. “This is definitely a place to continue learning. Anything you are most excited about to dig into more?” she asked as they wandered about. As always, she was trying to not be too intrusive and let the staff get on with their work. Still, she was the XO and hard to avoid.

“I look forward to delving more into my interest in Xenopsychiatry. I’ve studied it extensively but I am really looking forward to gaining some more practical experience. Do you have any special interests you plan on exploring here?” They continued making their way around the suites, slowly circling back toward the reception area.

That was a good question and Dira was actually surprised by it. She stopped wandering and gazed at Howell curiously. “You know, I’m not sure. This is my first time in a more formal command role and that is it’s own challenge. But I guess after I’ve found my way and feel truly settled is seeing how I can meld my psychiatry background to enhance my leadership abilities. I’ll take suggestions?” she said with a light laugh.

“Well it already gives you an enhanced understanding of individuals, that alone should be valuable in command.” Elin replied. “Not only will you have better insight into your staff, but also others we encounter.”

While Dira had already had something of an eval (f one wanted to fully call it that), so she was just enjoying this chat with someone she hoped she’d be able to turn to if she needed support. “It also can be helpful, though sometimes a detriment, that I am also telepathic. I like to give those I work closely with the disclaimer that for many reasons, I have a harder time shielding out others, so I am more aware of their thoughts and feelings than even I would prefer. I’ve always been that way so I am pretty adept at managing it these days. But I’m so used to having therapy sessions with an external therapist who works with therapists that now as XO… I don’t know. I guess I’m trying to rework the kind of relationship I have with a crew. I’m trying hard not to automatically go into therapist mode with everyone. It’s not going to be appropriate a lot of the time, but I’m not exactly sure what my style is I guess. I’ve had something of a test so far but I think it’s going to take more time.”

“Well you do sound as thought you’ve given it a lot of thought. Building experience is the natural next step and for that I would think the Ogawa is a perfect environment. You already have a good comfort zone in the medical field so this should be a perfect opportunity for you to push yourself in that new direction. You’ll find your style as you go along I am sure.”
