Alexis nodded holding still as the device did its work. She laced her fingers with his again. She liked holding his hand, but he knew that already. She smiled, extremely happy he liked her tattoos. She hadn’t intended to show them to him, like this, or she wasn’t sure when or how, but this was not a scenario she could have pictured. .....And then she realized all she had was a blanket staring into the eyes of a man she was very attracted to and who had also just saved her from her worst nightmare. She looked around the room, broken glass and blood on the floor. The area near the bedroom door was…it made her blink: dented bulkheads, blood, and what looked like pieces of torn cloth. She returned her gaze to his. “Can we get out of here? I don’t care where you take me, I just don’t want to be in here.”

Kane looked down at the blanket and grinned. “Absolutely… but I doubt the blanket is going to stop tongues from wagging.” and he looked up at her. “I’ll grab you a shirt. We’ll go to my place. I dont think ‘public’ spaces are where we should be right now.” and he stood up and walked right into her bedroom like he lived there.

Searching the closet first, he found a loose fitting pale blue shirt and grabbed it. It wouldn’t constrict her, and she would probably be sore in a few hours when the adrenaline and meds wore off. He came in and handed it to her, then turned his back so she could put it on.

Kane

While he was gone, and for some reason it didn’t bother her that he was walking around like he belonged there, she started putting things back in the med kit, meticulously, carefully, hyper focused on the task. An after affect of phobic reaction and not her mind. She took the shirt and slipped it on over the blanket and the pulled the blanket out from under it. Right now she wasn’t sore from the fall or the cuts. She looked around again and saw his jacket covering the glass. “You didn’t get cut did you?” She stood up moving around the glass realizing she was still shaking slightly. She closed her eyes, deep breath, till she settled a bit. “Frigga door.” And she pointed the opposite direction of herself, hoping she wouldn’t walk through the glass.
Bonner

“Nope, I’m good. Just some teeth marks on some fingers.” Kane said flatly and then lifted his coat after Frigga went to the door. He shook it out and then looked around. “Cleaning cycle will take care of this, but you’ll have to requisition a new table. Now… c’mon. Lets get outta here.” and he ushered her out the door. Across the passageway, two Engineers had stopped and were staring at the wall and deck. On the wall, a small bloodstain was visible about a foot off the floor. Below it, a slightly larger stain. Kane didn’t look, he just put the jacket around Alexis’s shoulders and moved with her down the passage.

Kane

She plucked her combadge off the ruined shirt Solomon had to cut off of her and absently attached it to her shirt. She didn’t care about the table or the cleaning cycle, she just wanted to get out of there. She nodded, “Okay.” Alexis saw the stains and but Kane had her walking past it before she could really observe anything about it. His jacket was warm and chased away the last of the chill. It smelled of real leather and something else that she liked. She followed him down the corridors until they stopped at his door. Frigga trotted along behind them quietly sniffing everything, but only stopping when they did.
Bonner

The door slid open and Kane said “Come on in.”

The room was… well… ‘spartan’ would be an understatement. No personal effects to speak of. No pictures. No mementos or memorabilia or souvenirs of past lives or loves. Everything she could see was standard Fleet issue.

Except for one thing.

Stuck the wall by the door to the bedroom was a single piece of paper… a pencil drawing. It was a woman, bent low over a very familiar work station, her hair tied up in a bun and with a stylus stuck in it.

Alexis took in the room, somehow it didn’t surprise her. After what he’d told her, the bits and pieces, she doubted he had anything, other than his tattoos, that he was able to keep from his life, before or after ‘the accident.’ She did notice the picture but it would take time to figure out or even process that. The drawing though could have been a photograph. And then she grinned, he was watching her! She had a fleeting though wondering if she could distract him over those ear pods as much as he did her.

Kane went to a cabinet and pulled out a bottle and a glass. He poured some of the brownish liquid in it and handed it to her. “Here. It’ll help. And… before we continue with anything… I think you and I need to talk.” and he gestured to the loveseat under the window.

Kane

She took the glass and took a swallow. It burned going down and she made a face. She sat on loveseat, back to the window. Talking meant information and questions and information to learn. She took another sip of the drink and felt the heat from it start slowly. “Okay. What do you want to talk about?” Frigga followed them in and wandered all around before finding a place under the chair, just her nose sticking out.

Kane took a seat and looked at her for a long time without speaking. His eyes watched her and he seemed to be weighing something in his mind. Finally, he spoke.

“So… you asked me what its like to travel through time. I didn’t lie, I don’t know. I’ve never traveled through time. But that wasn’t the right question. The question you should have asked is what is it like to travel through… reality.”

He leaned back and said “You ever been to Vulcan? Want to go see it with me?”

Kane

Oh so they were going to talk about that. “Some kind of quantum accident then? So your present was…similar at least, to our past. Now you are here because of some accident with quantum mechanics, maybe even crossed with temporal mechanics as well? or some other theory of reality that I’m not familiar with.” It wasn’t something she’d studied at length but she was familiar. The notion didn’t seem to phase her at all. Despite his vague answers Alexis had pieced the bits together, maybe not to the correct answer, but a closer answer.

“I have never been to Vulcan. Yes.” She was thinking about what he’d said, she wasn’t bothered by it, but…he said they couldn’t recreate the accident, and maybe he didn’t see it but her next question was, for her, directly related to her ‘yes.’ “If they could find a way, would you go back?”
Bonner

“Where I come from… you never could. Vulcan was destroyed… with billions still on it. And when I say destroyed, I mean deliberately. By a Romulan.” He leaned forward again and said “And you still aren’t grasping what it is I’m telling you… I didn’t move through time, or anything quantum mechanics can define. Alexis… I was pulled from one Universe to another. I didn’t shift spots on timeline, or move between dimensions. All of that exists here… in this reality.” and he looked at her, trying to convey the immensity of what he was saying.

“I’m not from here. I never existed here until 3 years ago. No law of nature or science or quantum mechanics created me. And then suddenly? Poof. Here I was. And I have no idea how. I can’t even tell you how it felt. When I think about it? I can’t tell you if it took me a second or eternity. But I can tell you I felt like nothing. And everything. All at the same time. And that feeling is something I cannot even begin to put into words. And it was absolutely… terrifying. So no. Never would I even begin to want to think about that again, let alone do it.”

Kane

She looked at him a long time, her head tilted to one side thinking. Making her brain slow down and analyze each leap she was making. Finally, “I do understand, Solomon. At least on a basic intellectual level. It’s not a field I have ever studied so I probably don’t have the terminology to express what idea, leaps, and connections my mind is making.” She didn’t want to upset him. “I understand what you’re telling me.” He seemed…apprehensive. She reached over and took his hand. “I’m not going anywhere. I will listen even if I don’t have an answer. Perhaps that’s the point you don’t need an answer, just someone to listen?” Alexis wasn’t good a psychology but she thought maybe he needed a change of subject. “This one right here,” she turned his right hand palm up and traced the tattoo in the center with her finger.
Bonner

It was an ancient navigation symbol called a ‘compass rose’, even though there was no flower in it. He watched her trace the lines and felt a surge on his skin everywhere her finger crossed him. “Compass… so I don’t lose my way. Didn’t realize the potential irony when I got it.” He looked up at her and said “Thats why the leash. Thats why the reading. They don’t know what else to do with me. So… what better place to keep track of you than on a floating lab, huh?”

Kane

“Well that’s their lack of vision. You have the potential to see things in ways we can’t. Your perspective, your experiences could be the compass that guides us to the answers to some of our biggest problems.” She shrugged, “Or not, but it’s their loss. All they can see is a potential threat. But if you were, you wouldn’t have waited three years to do something about it.” She kept tracing each image on his palm, little shocks going up her arm each time she did. She took one more sip of the drink he’d given her, the heat of it had a bite but she took a deep breath, relaxing, tucking her legs under her and leaning her head against the back of the couch. “What’s this one?” her thumb brushed against his inner wrist, above the NDFD crest. “If you could pick a tattoo for me what would be and where would it go? What’s the first thing you’re going to teach me to say in Chinese? Vulcan is still here, in this universe, do you want to go see it? Where would you go if you could go anywhere? What’s your favorite book?”
Bonner

The tattoo was of a topless woman with exaggerated but proportional features. Centuries ago it was called a ‘Pin Up Girl’s. “She covers a scar. I prefer the topless imaginary girl to the one that gave me the scar.” and he chuckled. “A tattoo for you?” and he looked at her… and was very obviously taking in all of her curves and features. “Lotus flower with cherry blossoms on your right shoulder cascading down onto your chest until just above your cleavage. First thing will be Grettings and basic courtesies. No, I don’t. Everywhere I looked I’d just see… ghosts. I’d go to Risa. ‘Questions To Ask The Shadows’ by Vor’lt. Doesn’t exist here. Same questions to you. Go.”

Kane

“You’ve seen both my tattoos now and I’ve told you what they mean.” She’d been hurt and he was taking care of the injury but now after the fact she was all too aware of the fact she’d had just the blanket. “I’m not teaching you a language, but I could teach you sign if you want. We’d start with the alphabet. I don’t know where I would go. Somewhere that maybe I could find something to do other than work. With enough to do that I wouldn’t want to work.” Every once in awhile, Alexis had a wicked sense of humor, if you could keep up with her thought process. “A Caduceus with ‘Do No Harm… Unless the guys a dick.’ written around it. Pride and Prejudice.”
