Willow gave a slight frown at Kane and sat herself opposite him. “Oh you and I are going to need to set some boundaries aren’t we.” She said with a slight smirk.

Kane looked at her and shrugged, a small smirk of his own tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Probably.” was all he said, but there was none of the edge to his voice that he had when speaking to Smith.

At that, Dira shot Willow a smile. Good.

Willow didn’t return the look with one of her own. She didn’t need to. She simply raised one eyebrow and clasped her hands. Putting her elbows on the table she rested her chin on the interlocked fingers and watched smith.

Smith cleared his throat and said “Now, then. If I may…” and he looked at Kane with something akin to hatred but also imploring him to just be quiet. “As I am sure you, Captain, and you, Commander, are aware; Lieutenant Kane is something of an… issue… for Star Fleet -” and Kane mumbled in a sing-song fashion “Only because you make me one…” and Smith’s jaw clenched and he closed his eyes for a moment, took a breath, and continued. ” - because of his somewhat unorthodox origin with us.” Kane opened his mouth to speak and Smith shot him a glare and snapped his fingers at him. Kane closed his mouth but a grin spread over his face and his eyes locked on Smith as if he had scored some kind of victory over the Intelligence officer. “But, Star Fleet has spent several years verifying and educating the Lieutenant in not only the improvements in medical science from his particular point of origin, but in training him to help us utilize his particular skill set to help the Federation and Star Fleet. He -” and Kane held a hand up in front of his face and he looked at the two Ship’s Officers and said “Or to be blunt, they’ve spent the last almost three years pulling every kind of blood, bone, tissue, and other samples too inappropriate to discuss with ladies present to try and prove that I’m not what I said I was and they couldn’t so someone high up on the food chain who actually still has a soul told them they had to stop using me as a lab rat and let me go.” and he looked at Smith and said “See? Short and to the point. You really need to work on your people skills.”

Well that was interesting. Willow considered another such medical staff me, er who had been brought to her with a handler of sorts who regarded him with the same sort of contempt. She had handled that situation badly. Perhaps now as the time to try again and get it right. However her thought processes were interrupted by the interesting colour that Smith was turning…

Smith’s face went red and he was about to say something but he just clenched his jaw and looked at Taylor and Myqian. “He’s your problem now. Intel will task him from time to time with operational objectives, but what those are I am not responsible for thank god. I’m sure someone will be in touch.” and he stood and said “Captain. Commander.” with a nod to each. He looked at Kane and said “Goodbye Lieutenant. I hope whatever hole spit you out here gets hungry again.” and he left without so much as another word.

Kane watched him leave and then turned to the two officers. “Nice guy. Remind me to send him a fruit basket.” he said with enough derison to make it effective and then he waited, one hand on the table and one hand on his knee, to see what fresh hell he was going to be dropped into next.

Kane, R&D

Dira considered him a moment and then shifted her coffee to the side and folded her arms on the table. “Well, now that we’re off to such a nice start, let me introduce myself properly. I’m Dira Myqian, ship’s first officer. My job is to make sure that this ship and its crew has everything they need to do the exceptional work that they do. And that includes you,” she said simply. Her tone was matter-of-fact with a soft edge, as if it could easily shift to suit whatever purpose her words required. It was a modulation that had been practiced for years.

“I may be from another reality or some s&^%, but I know what a XO does.” Kane replied flatly.

“I’m not going to say some sort of bullsh!t about how what came before doesn’t matter and all that matters is what you do from here on out. It is true, to a point, but it’s also wrong. All I want you to understand from me at this moment is that we’re not your enemy Lieutenant. How you want to play this is entirely up to you. And I can’t speak for Captain Taylor here, but I’m not here to fight you.” She shrugged. “Not interested.”

Commander Myqian, XO

Kane looked at her for a moment and then said “You’ll excuse me for not exactly jumping for joy at the moment. If that line hadn’t been fed to me ad nauseum for the past two and half years, I might give you some kind of credit. But I’ll be straight with you. I’m not here to fight anybody unless they start the fight first. In fact… I don’t know why I am here. I was told I was coming here like a week ago. Thats it. So other than Smith’s smarmy little crack about operations secret blah blah blah? I don’t know f%$k -all… so there ya go.”

Kane, R&D

Dira just nodded. Was she upset/ Nope, not in the least.

Willow sat silently contemplating Kane while her executive officer spoke up and he replied. Why was he here? It was anyone’s guess really starfleet command had its own reasons for assigning people to ships and she had received her share of trouble making troublemakers over her time as CO of the Ogawa. At least this one wasn’t a reforming criminal with the unhappy habit of genetic manipulation, or so she assumed.

After her silence the red haired woman finally moved, carefully unfolded her hands and picked up the coffee Charlie had given her and seemed to be considering. Finally, blowing on her coffee she did speak, but not to either Officer.

=^= Galen. Please send a memo to Ensign Charlie and have her send Mister Smith a fruit basket with our compliments. Perhaps something with potassium. Charlie can organise the arrangement herself.=^=

Therapist face well in place, Dira didn’t react, but later though she would have a laugh.

There was silence for a few moments before the calm and distinctly male computer voice responded. =^= Memo sent Captain. Ensign Charlie confirms the orders.=^=

Willow sat back “Thank you Galen.” She said and sipped her coffee. she then turned her attention to Kane. “Welcome to the Ogawa Doctor.”

Kane gave the Captain a look. It could have been construed in many ways… confusion, wariness, hesitation… but the wicked smile that followed was one of pure, sadistic joy. “Oh, I’m gonna like you.” and he nodded his head appreciatively.

“If I may throw on an option on the table? You’re one of over four hundred new crew members. We don’t know exactly what you will be doing here either and since you don’t but you are here, why don’t decide we take what you’re good at, and the fact that we’re on a state of the art ship medical ship and find something that you want to do. Screw Intelligence,” she said with a slight gleam in her dark eyes.

Commander Myqian, XO

Kane leaned forward and said “Add ‘with a red hot poker’ to that last part and you got a deal. Although I’m pretty sure Smith would like that.” and he chuckled. “So… what do you want to know? About me, what happened… whatever. You all may be here to screw me over in some new kind of way, but the fruit basket gives you a bit of leeway.” and he winked at the Captain. “So screw it… let’s see what happens next.”

Kane

Willow continued to sip her coffee. It had once been said, she could recall reading that a captain who let their second-in-command attack while they sat and watched for weakness was an excellent tactician. Well she may have learned to wear the red of command but ultimately she was a doctor at heart.

“Commander Myqian is correct. We don’t know why you are here but we have the space to accommodate you and from the sounds of things you could use some space of your own to be an officer and a doctor and whatever else again. I cannot speak for starfleet intel but while you are in this ship so long as you stick to the rules in play and don’t piss off someone who doesn’t deserve it then I have no issue with you being here. You aren’t on house arrest and we don’t intend to, nor have we the time to track your movements about the ship. We could of course but that isn’t the best way to make first impressions is it.” She grinned.

“You’re welcome to tell us whatever you think would be useful for us to know or anything from your personal file you think merits further explanation. I assume there is a lot of that.” She grinned. “Then you can decide ultimately what do you want to do. We have a lot on offer.” She then added “Do you want a coffee since you didn’t get a chance to respond before?”

Kane shook his head. “No thanks. I’m good. So… well, I grew up in a s^%$hole of a colony. I managed ot get on with the New Detroit Fire Department. You can look it up. Seems to be pretty identical from mine. Search and Rescue Team Leader, MedEvac Team Leader. FInally scraped together enough to get off-planet. Went to the Academy. Graduated as a PA, Emergency Medicine… and a Tactical Officer. Met all the requirements for my M.D.. didn’t file for it. Ended up the USS Chernov… you guys had one here too. Was made CMO, got a couple of medals to weigh down my uniform jacket. Worked with Intel after I blew up one of their ops where they had us all strapped in some kind of neural-simulator. Apparently my brain didn’t like being told that what it was seeing was real when it wasn’t, so I woke up and beat the s%$t outta the agent in charge. Then my CO had to go and try to get himself killed in some kind of experimental transporter. I think I pushed him outta the way, dunno for certain. Anyways… either a second or an eternity later here I am. I’ve been retrained and requalled as an M.D. in Emergency Medicine with Field Surgical Endorsement, Starship Tactical Systems, and Medical Intelligence. Basically, if you find it and don’t know what it is, I’m your boy. Or… if you really wanna know what that is but can’t get to it? Call me. Other than that, if your bleeding and dont want to do that, let me know. My bedside manner is crap and I don’t care and no I won’t work on improving it. Basically… my version of the Hippocratic Oath is ‘Do No Harm Unless The Guy Is A D%$k. Then They Had It Coming.’.”

Kane

The captain seemed to sit back and take this in, her expression calm and her brow furrowed ever so slightly as she listened. As if she were concentrating on his words. When he was finished she gave a slight chuckle. “Yes…my mentor had the same Hippocratic oath as you. You both must have got it from the same store.” She said.

“In terms of the bedside manner, so long as you are efficient, do your job, whatever we decide it is, and follow the orders given by the Chief of staff or The AMO or myself and my first officer then we can let that one lie as it is…for now. But if you are an ass for the sake of being an ass then I’ll roast you alive each time till you get the message. “ she smiled charmingly. “I also have a copy of that version of the oath. I find treating command similarly to how I ran my sickbay seems to work well at times.”

She looked thoughtful. “How versed are you on the new Nightingale specs?”
