“Well, I can’t fault his enthusiasm,” Brad said quietly to Isyme. “He learning gymnastics?”

“He’s self-taught,” Isyme chuckled, softly.

“Oh, so I should expect him to be a regular then?” Brad asked in a teasing tone.

“Good job!” he said to Zahir. “Now I’m going to try and do the biobed’s job for it before it finishes,” he said, requesting a basic scan of the boy. “Any recent sick days or injuries?” he asked.

Chief of Staff

Zahir threw a crooked, playfully challenging look at the biobed before eagerly nodding. “No bugs, but I broke my ankle earlier this year,” he shrugged. “The doctor said I had a ‘growth plate fracture.’” He still wasn’t entirely sure what that meant, but it’d stuck with him long enough to relay to Brad. “It feels okay now.”

The biobed’s scans would confirm Zahir’s account. At the tibial growth plate, Zahir’s ankle showed signs of ongoing recovery. His doctor had evidently chosen natural healing processes over osteo-regeneration. Aside from his fracture, the scans suggested the Andorian-Aenar boy was in excellent shape.

Brad made a note on his PaDD. “Hm, that’ll be something to watch, but right now it’s probably not a concern. How’d you break it?” he asked Zahir, wondering if the boy’s rambunctiousness had been at fault.

“Well…” a sheepish glint flickered across his expression, but it did little to shake his grin. “My friends and I were chasing this big swarm of ice-bores in one of the caves near home. Like really big.” He stretched his arms as if to quantify the swarm’s size. “Anyway, I was trying to catch one, but a rock got in my way.” He wrinkled his nose with an evident loathing toward that rock. “I tripped and got stuck in an ugly boot for weeks.”

“The nerve,” Brad said with a grin.

“It was a very rude rock,” Zahir concurred.

“Zahir was born with congenital cataracts,” Isyme added. “He underwent lens correction as an infant. Otherwise, he’s fully vaccinated and tolerates yearly check-ups.”

‘Part-Aenar, yeah of course he needed it,’ Brad thought. “And no sign of them coming back?” he asked, this time to Isyme.

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

“None,” Isyme shook her head. She would always have concern for her son’s eyesight, but without the evidence to suggest cataracts would return, she wasn’t worried.

“Good enough for me,” Brad said, importing the data from the biobed and signing off on it. “He’s good to go. Your turn,” he said to Isyme.

“Cool beans! Thank ya, Doc.” Zahir snaked his hands behind him, propelling himself from the biobed to the floor in a single bound.

Waving at Dr. Walker, a grin plastered to his lips, he added.. “Well, it’s been nice meeting you. But if you don’t mind—“

“Ahem,” Isyme cleared her throat, shooting the boy a pointed look. “Where do you think you’re going?”

”…Home.” Zahir peered over his shoulder, beaming as if it would convince her to let him go solo. “I can retrace my steps.”

“Mhm,” Isyme clicked her tongue in a vaguely playful chide. “I know you can, but I’m not sure you should.”

“What if I get someone to go with me?” He looked at Brad pleadingly. “There are hundreds— thousands of people here. I’m sure I can convince someone with my charms.” Zahir shot them another exaggerated grin and wiggled his eyebrows.

“If—” Isyme’s lips parted in response, but she was promptly cut off by a passing NE Nurse.

“I’ll take him,” the NE Nurse remarked. “Sorry, I was just passing though. But uhm, I’ve got a break. So, if you need someone to take him, I can do it.”

Isyme examined the nurse, her antennae writhing in thought. With an affirmation-seeking glance at Dr Walker, she allowed a deliberate nod. “If Zahir is comfortable… then I don’t see why not.” In fact, she saw many reasons, but just as her parents had done unto her, she wouldn’t shelter him with her fear.

“Yeah!” Zahir darted to the nurse, making a quick introduction. And before Isyme could finish her parting call to caution, they’d disappeared from her line of sight, murmurs of ‘What’s your job?’ and ‘ooh, that sounds cool!’ gracing the air in their wake.

“Well…” Isyme leisurely turned to Walker and propped herself onto the biobed with a slight smile, “I guess it’s time for the adult stuff.”
