Rather abruptly, Dira pushed back her chair and rose to her feet. Hands on her hips, she moved over to the shelf, her breathing having picked up but she was forcing it to be slower and more even. When she turned a few moments later to face Kane, there was only one way to describe her expression: cold fury. Many people had and would assume the touchy-feely therapist didn’t have it in her, but they would be incredibly mistaken. Ohhhh so mistaken! “How is Alexis?” she asked, her tone far quieter than her expression indicated it would be.

Kane gave her an appraising look… and then nodded once slightly. Finally… an XO with b@lls. he thought to himself. “She’s okay. I took her to my quarters and gave her a pretty potent anti-inflammatory. She’s slept for almost ten hours. Only woke up once, but I got her back settled. Frigga is with her. But… I dont want her to know I talked to you. She’s self-conscious enough as is.”

Raising her right hand to her mouth, her thumb rested under her chin and the side of her index finger rubbed back and forth across her lower lip as her ebony eyes gazed at him intently. With a forced exhale through pursed lips, Myqian dropped her hand. “You know what the best part of being a telepath is, Lieutenant? You learn how to read between the lines when you’re only getting part of the story. And on top of that before I was assigned to the Ogawa I was a psychiatrist for twenty years. And because this isn’t my first day dealing with chaotic situations, I’m going to tell you that I hear your request, and I acknowledge the reason why you’ve made it but… request denied. And I’m going to explain why and I need you to hear me.”

Dira moved back to her chair and sat, once again folding her arms on the desk. “I started my career out at the tail end of the Dominion War. The people I worked with were dealing with a whole range of post-traumatic issues and we worked with them and often their families too. I know trauma Lieutenant. It’s my speciality. I’ve treated it and I’ve lived it myself. So I know what I’m saying when I tell you that keeping our discussion from Alexis is absolutely the wrong way to go about this. I respect you a great deal for bringing this to my attention as soon as you felt you were able, but let me ask you this: if Alexis has just been through that difficult of an event, how are we supposed to help her if she doesn’t know about it? And how much do you think she’s going to trust us to support her if she found out we were keeping secrets and acting behind her back?”

Commander Myqian, XO

Kane looked at her quizzically for a moment and then said “Well, for a telepath you kinda suck at it. I’m not saying don’t ^ever^ tell her. And yeah, she absolutely needs some kind of help in dealing with the mental and emotional fallout of this. But if you start in on it now, you’re just giving Flaccid MacOneNut more ammunition to use against her. I can guarantee you he’s monitoring her records, comms, experiments… hell, he’s probably looking at her replicator records. ‘Cause that’s what those shifty scale-skinned snakes do. So what we need to do is give him someone else to focus on. Someone to pull his attention away and draw the focus off Bonner so she can get the assistance she needs to deal with this without him using it against her.”

Despite the myriad of thoughts that arose, Dira let him speak without interruption, leaning back in her chair.

He leaned forward and but his elbows on his legs and said “I aim to piss this guy off so much that he has no choice but to focus on me instead of her. What I need from you is help doing that. The one thing that will tick Seamus O’Impotent off more than anything is if Bonner is happy in spite of what he does. And official therapy sessions and mandatory evaluations pulling her from her work aren’t going to do that. So… do them unofficially. Just talk to her. Like a friend. Im guessing she already kind of is one to you since you used her first name when I didn’t. And the waves of pissed-offedness cascading off of you when I told you what happened tells me you have some kind of affection for her. So let’s be her friends and make sure she is happy and content.” He leaned back and smiled a very predatory grin.

“And then we can kick his teeth in together. See? Team building opportunity.”

Kane, R&D

Myqian laughed aloud, feeling it throughout her body. It was a well-timed and necessary relief of tension, but she didn’t explain or apologize for her laugh before responding to him. “Well there is a whole lot there I can and probably will respond to but it’s clear to me that we’re actually thinking similar things, but coming at them from different angles.”

She sat forward again. “I never once said I was pulling her from duty, or doing anything formally. I know it might be easier to believe that I don’t understand Soulis and people like him, but I actually do. No, I understand him very well indeed and if there is something I cannot abide, Lieutenant, it’s a bully. And the way this man came and left our ship and terrorized a woman while he was here? Well, that makes me want to sucker-punch someone, and I think you know me just well enough to know that I’m not someone easily inspired to violence.”

Commander Myqian, XO

Kane put his hands behind his head and grinned.

“Well… nobody’s perfect.”

Dira snorted and then sighed. “There are ways we can very discreetly provide the help Alexis needs and”-she reached across her desk and picked up a PADD-“you’d be amazing what sort of communications you can do passing about these simple things. But in acknowledging that we’re going to have to be very careful about how we proceed, your request to keep it hush-hush the way you want it, is still denied. I will still be telling Captain Taylor as soon as is feasible and I will also speak to Lieutenant Haven. Perhaps a slight increase in plain-clothed patrols to mimic off-duty crew could be useful. The point is, Lieutenant, we can figure this out together, for Alexis’ sake, but it is going to require you to trust me farther than you might be comfortable with.”
