(snip)
He was on fire. Every nerve, every synapse, every sensory receptor on and in his body starting to fire all at once. It hurt… but he didn’t want it to stop. Time slipped away and all that was there was her.

At one point, he pulled his lips from hers and said “Alexis, I…” but the words hung on his tongue. But what the mouth couldn’t say the eyes held in them. He brushed her cheek with his fingers.

Time stood still when he said her name. She didn’t recognize by name what was in his eyes, but she recognized it was a reflection of what was in her own. He brushed her cheek with the same fingers that had so carefully sketched her picture to life, like he was sketching her, bringing her to life in reality. She closed her eyes leaning slightly against his hand. In that moment something fundamentally Alexis came alive. Her eyes opened and watched him, recognized him and called to him.

And then he kissed her again and let her take him where he had never been.

Kane

It was too much, too overwhelming, too intense, too unfamiliar, too raw. Her mind tried to take it, analyze it, define it, give it shape and form. She shook her head insistent that her mind stay off that she stay in that moment, that didn’t seem to stop. She let him distract her and she sank into the way he kissed her, and Solomon Kane had total control of when and how her mind was allowed to turn back on.

Hours passed and they remained right there, together. Frigga finally came and tugged on Kane’s pant leg and did a little dance and spun in a circle. You’re both happy and I’m happy and I don’t want you to not be happy but I gotta GO! she said with her movements. Kane finally broke the connection, at least part of it, and looked down.

Alexis rested her forehead against his shoulder, still pressed, squeezed, tightly against him and stayed there letting time start running again. Reality couldn’t return, it had changed, and Alexis didn’t want it to go back.

“Dog door is next on the list.” He looked at Alexis, and said “Walk? Or stay here. We should get your stuff if you’re moving in… you know, for a while.”

Kane

Slowly her mind kicked back in, “Program her combadge to your door.” She was moving in…for a while, but how long was that. Alexis knew though, it didn’t matter how long awhile was, when it came to an end it would break her heart. “Ummm…walk. Then we don’t have to leave a second time.” Did that sound too suggestive, needy, or something? At that moment she didn’t care. With a resigned sigh, once his arms relaxed, she reluctantly stood up, one hand still laces with his. “Come on Frigga. Quick walk okay, no ball this time.”

Kane stood, keeping his hand with hers and said “Ok. Dog. Then your place. Then back here. Ok? And if you want, just give me a list and you can wait outside while I go in your place. Either way, you’ll be ok. Promise.”

Kane

Her grip tightened on his and there was a noticeable detachment in her eyes as he talked about going to her quarters to get her things. Alexis just nodded, her voice contrastingly chipper as she spoke to Frigga. “Alright come on Frigga, let’s go.” Stepping by the door they slid open and Frigga took off for the turbolift twirling and spinning and dancing in place. The dog could barely stand still in the lift for the two deck ride to the arboretum. When the lift stopped Alexis shook her head with a smile, “Go!” and Frigga took off. By the time she and Solomon reached the doors Frigga was somewhere in the foliage. Several people called out to Frigga as she passed by, mostly patients that took advantage of having a therapy and trained assistance dog on board. Frigga was polite and calm, but made a bee line straight back to them as soon as she was done. She glanced from Kane to Alexis and back and then wove her way around Alexis’ legs and nosed her hand.

Kane looked at Frigga and then at Alexis. “Breathe, babe. Breathe. Ten minutes. Thats all. In and out and back to… to… our room. Okay? Just stay with me.”

He led her back out and to the lift, then off the lift and down the passageway. Stopping at her door, he said “Wait here. Frigga- watch Alexis.” and he went inside.

The room was clean and Soulis free. “Computer. Lights up.” and the shadows fled. He walked through her quarters and made sure it was clear. He then walked out.

“Listen. I’ll be right beside you. But don’t talk, don’t sing, don’t anything; okay? In, pack a big bag, and out. Okay…” and he took her hand, “… let’s go.”

Kane

Alexis would have loved to say she didn’t understand the reason for his instructions, but she did. The last six months working directly for Intel made sure of that. She waited outside with Frigga who was dutifully watching her like a predator, and Alexis noticed the similarity in the stillness and the intensity of her gaze to glimpses she’d seen of Solomon. Her mind mulled that over, but it didn’t bother her, in fact it settled her. She nodded firmly, gripped his hand, and walked into her quarters.

She walked in and didn’t look around. She just focused on what she had to get. Behind her desk she grabbed her med kit, and then across the room she grabbed Frigga’s harness, leash, and a couple toys. She walked into the bedroom moved to the bed and grabbed a bag from underneath and tossed what she’d already collected into the bag, and she grabbed the uniforms and two dressed from the closet and put them in the bag. She opened a drawer tossing in pajamas and other necessities. She was half way to the bathroom when she stopped dead, the utter certainty that he was behind her. Hello Alexis Memory was an amazing and horrifying thing. She could hear his voice, the heavy Irish brogue a breath from her ear. She turned suddenly almost slamming into Solomon.

Kane looked at her and put his hands on her shoulders. He nodded and turned her around, holding her hand. He motioned to the bag and nodded, gesturing for her to hurry up.

Kane

Alexis looked up at him and took a silent but ragged breath. With nod and holding tightly to his hand, she moved into the bathroom. If the lights had been off, she would have just left the rest. Right off the counter she grabbed a hairbrush, tooth brush, and a handful of discarded styluses she’d used to pin her hair up. She didn’t need anything else; she tossed it all in the bag and zipped it closed and picked it up. She waved silently at Frigga and headed for the door, until she stopped dead next to the desk staring at a PaDD there. She stared at it, reading it upside down, but did NOT touch it. The information on it seemed innocent enough: a report on increased protein consumption for crew serving in zero-g environments. Not something Alexis would need to be studying at the moment. It wasn’t hers. She looked at Solomon, pointed at the PaDD and shook her head, hard. Trying to make him understand. This didn’t belong here, it wasn’t hers.

Kane nodded and motioned her to the door. Once outside, he looked at her and said softly “Follow me.” and they hurried through the passageways away form the quarters and towards the labs. A few minutes later and they arrived at the R&D lab and Kane walked in. “Everyone out. Borchek, wait at the door. No one in till I say so.” Borchek looked confused but a glare form Kane sent him scurrying away. When the lab was empty, Kane said “GALEN, activate Kane protocol Omega.” GALEN’s voice responded and said “Activated. Door secured and Communications scrambler online. Thirty minute countdown begins now.”

Frigga trotted along behind them and once in the lab she moved to sit under Alexis’ lab table watching intently. Alexis put the bag under the table as well, and turned to watch as everyone else exited the lab. She was still, but her mind was going into over drive, and then he locked the lab down.....

Kane looked at Alexis and said “Get me the soldering tool and six sheets of deuterium mesh. Go.” and he went to one of the work benches where the Engineering staff worked. He opened a drawer and pulled out thin copper wire and a large battery and carried to the nearest work station.

Kane

She moved to the back of the lab, pressed her palm to the bioscanner on the engineering cabinet, there was a soft ‘snick’ as the lock disengaged and she opened the doors. She reached up to the top shelf for the soldering tool and then, quickly scanning each self, she knelt down and grabbed exactly six sheets of deuterium mesh. She stood up, closed the doors, flipped the handle down, hearing the lock re-engage, and brought it all to him. She set it on the table and then looked at her work station. Mind half on Kane and what he might ask her to do and the other half on her work station. Mentally inventorying every item, every sample, every project she had locked in the cabinets. What was she doing that he wanted so badly?
Bonner

“Focus.” Kane said softly but firmly. He took a PaDD and laid it on top of one of the mesh sheets. Me outlined it and then drew another square around the first one, but on inch or so wider. He then set the PaDD on edge and repeated the process. Once he was done, he took a plasma pen and trimmed the mesh along the larger dimensions of each. Using those cut pieces as a template, he quickly made two large sections and four smaller ones. He picked up one of the small sections and laid it at a ninety degree angle to the large on the edge. “Hold this here, just like this.” and he put her hand on the small piece.

She was focused just not where he wanted her to be. Research notes, odd connections, dead ends, tangent topics, experiment results....She took the smaller section and focused her gaze there, keeping the mesh steady and her fingers out of the way.

He took the soldering tool and began to solder each point of mesh from one section to the other. Once they were done with that, he said “Ok, repeat it here.” Between the two of them, they soon had a metal mesh sleeve capable of holding a PaDD inside of it. He quickly connected the wires to the sleeve and then to the battery, making sure the connection was sound before disconnecting it. One end of the sleeve remained open. Kane looked at Alexis and said “Faraday cage.” He cleared the workstation of the remains of their construction quickly, put the cage in a black bag, and then said “GALEN, stand down protocol. Authorization Dont-Mess-With-A-Missionary-Man.” “Protocols deactivated. Countdown stopped.” GALEN replied. Kane looked at Alexis. “Go to my quarters. I’ll be there as soon as I can, okay?” and he looked at Frigga. “Frigga… my home. Take Alexis to my home.” and he pointed at his own chest. He kissed Alexis on the cheek and said “Go. Let me help. This is what I do, okay? Trust me. I’ll tell you all about it. But go.” and he opened the door. “Thanks, Borchek. No place like your desk for a quickie.” and walked past him and down the passageway.

Kane

Alexis nodded and helped him finish soldering the pieces together. She knew what a Faraday cage was in theory; though, she’d never used one or actually seen one in person. She took the soldering tool and left over mesh and returned it to the supply cabinet. She walked over to her work station to get the bag pausing, seeing her work across the table, in her minds eye. What did he want?

Frigga paced a circle around Kane’s legs and then let out a very soft non agressive bark in acknowledgement. Alexis looked up at Solomon and nodded, she trusted him…but she was running on auto pilot mostly, her mind racing through other focus points. Frigga tugged her hand, she picked up the bag and left. Frigga nudging her quickly toward the lift. Inside the lift Alexis called for the deck, absently, and then down the corridor and left and then the second right, and Frigga walked right up to and through Kane’s door when it opened for her, Frigga nudging Alexis, unnecessairly, the whole way. Alexis set the bag down in a corner out of the way. She pulled a rope tug toy out of the bag and sat, back against the love seat and to the darkness outside the window. Frigga laid across her lap, head on Alexis’s shoulder. “It’s alright Frigga. I’m gonna figure it out, promise. Whatever it is he wants I’ll figure it out. You may have to stay with Solomon for awhile, yeah? You like him?” She pet the dog, ruffling her fur, and then hugging her. “Whatever I’m working on, it’s not that important. He sent you away once, so you’ll be safer here, yeah?” Frigga growled softly, she and that other man didn’t like each other and Frigga had made that clear months ago, but the man kept coming back.
