Elin sat at her office desk, taking a moment to absorb and process all the excitement of the last few days. All the new names, faces, and sights were finally starting to settle into their places in her mind and memory. She only had one check in left to do and so she sent a quick text based private message to Dr. Grayson via the computer to see if she could fit her in amongst all the other check ins going on at the moment. <Dr. Grayson, Please let me know when you can fit me in for an onboarding Psych Eval. Thank you.> She took a moment to appreciate the irony of the COPsych checking in for a Psych Eval and chuckled briefly to herself at the thought.

“See you in a couple of days,” Grayson replied with a smile, watching the officer in medical blue leave her office. She loved working with the crew and helping them overcoming their challenges, but she hated the paperwork that was required. One part of her brain urged her to get down to business on her notes while another part of her felt like procrastinating. Sitting down at her desk, she was about to begin her progress note when she was alerted to a message. Smiling and chuckling, she offered to no one in particular, “Saved by the bell.”

Reading the request for an evaluation, Mariah’s smile deepened. She had been looking for a distraction from paperwork, and it seemed like the universe had an interesting offer. It didn’t take her long to compose a reply: I’d be happy to see you now, if you have the time? I’d be most grateful as I much prefer chatting with people than doing paperwork. Just let me know what works best for you.

Elin’s reply came back almost immediately: I will be right there, thank you.

Not too many moments later a message came in from the Holographic receptionist ‘Heather’: Lt. Howell is here to see you Dr. Grayson, shall I send her in?”

Grayson exhaled in relief, grateful to be granted a respite from her notes. “Please,” the psychiatrist replied, still not quite used to the holographic receptionist. She didn’t doubt the holographic woman’s efficiency, but she was used to actual humanoids serving in administrative roles, particularly roles that involved not just handling sensitive information, but required someone to interact with those struggling with personal emotional issues.

Elin stepped into Dr. Grayson’s office a moment later. She smiled as she made eye contact with the Dr. “Dr. Grayson, my apologies for the short notice. Thank you for seeing me so quickly.”

Mariah waved away the apology with a smile and gestured for Howell to make herself comfortable in any one of the chairs in Grayson’s seating area. “I should thank you for presenting me with an opportunity to take a break from my notes. I love my work, but the red tape can be endless,”she added with a chuckle. “May I get you some thing from the replicator?”

“You are most welcome for the intrusion then,” Elin replied with a smile. “Hot water with honey, lemon, and a cinnamon stick please,” she requested as she made her way to a nicely cushioned chair. “The rum can wait until I am off duty of course.”

The replicator order was easily fulfilled and in short order, Grayson was handing Howell a hot cup as carefully as possible. Taking a moment to seat herself across from the fellow psychiatrist, Grayson offered, ” I think you and I have similar backgrounds professionally, which I find interesting and unexpected,” she had it with a smile.

Elin sipped the warm drink, enjoying it’s citrusy brightness. “Indeed?” she asked with an answering smile.

Dr. Elin Howell, COPsych

“Well, I suppose that’s not entirely true. You taught at the Academy and I’ve taught residents aboard my various postings, but I admire and respect a fellow educator. I also recognize there is quite a bit of overlap between neuropsychiatry and forensic psychiatry as well. I think by now, we’ve come to appreciate the interrelatedness of most things, particularly when it comes to people’s health needs, whether physical or emotional.”

“I can’t disagree with you there,” Elin replied. “I’ve come to learn that as much as we humans like to categorize and separate things into boxes, in the end it really does not work that way. The more we learn, the more we realize how every system effects every other system, and that goes for more than just medicine.” She looked thoughtful for a moment. “Teaching was something I came to a bit later in my career. I always saw myself more as a learner than a teacher.” She glanced over at the image on the wall. “It was Olivia who showed me that teaching was yet another form of valuable learning. For both parties.” She sighed, “But I am getting off course here, this is, of course, your evaluation. Do you have any concerns stepping onto a new ship?”

Lt. Howell COPsych

Mariah took in the question, cocked her head, and started to chuckle. After a moment she put her hand up to her mouth to stifle her laughter and said, “I’m sorry. I just realized when you sent your message, you were looking to evaluate me.” Smiling broadly and gesturing between the two of them, she added, “I thought it was going to be the other way around.”

OOC Lori: Not only did Mariah misunderstand, her writer did too, LOL! My bad! I figured we could still run with it though. :-)

OOC: Oops, my bad actually, I got turned around somewhere, this actually was me reporting in for my check in now that I look back. Shall we take a few steps back and restart where you handed Elin her drink? Life has been so insane lately I am a bit brain muddled!

Amie
OOC: No worries, Amie! I have gotten lost in a few threads myself. I’m game to regroup at whatever point works for you.

OOC: Starting again at the point Elin got her drink....

Grayson offered, ” I think you and I have similar backgrounds professionally, which I find interesting and unexpected,” she said it with a smile.

Elin sipped the warm drink, enjoying it’s citrusy brightness. “I suppose we do at that. As diverse a field as it can be, Psychiatry remains a science of the mind and the brain. You can label different areas all you want but it still comes down to that core. I guess that’s part of what I have always loved about it. It has its beautiful simplicity, and its mind boggling complexity all at once.”

“I know what you mean,” Grayson replied with a small smile. “I also really enjoy the practical applications for our knowledge and skills. Providing therapy has always been more than just one aspect of the job to me. Still, it can be a challenge to balance helping the people you live with and also just living with them. How’s it been for you?”
