“Naturally,” Dira said with a smile before taking her own sip and setting the cup to the side. “But the best part is that there is no one answer, and you don’t need all the answers right now in order to begin this process. You just need enough to take whatever that first step is.”

“That’s true,” Aizala nodded thoughtfully. “And much easier sad then done. At least for me. Or at least right now.”

Dira leaned forward toward Tija. “The thing that people don’t really tell us when we’re younger, and I’m not sure we’d entirely believe them either, is that whatever your calling is can and probably will change, even in just small ways. Because we change Aizala. Or sometimes life changes us. And when we hit those change points sometimes it requires evaluation. So my suggestion as you go forward right now is to see this is an opportunity, rather than a crisis you need to figure out. You’re okay! And we’ll support you however we can to make the changes you need to make for yourself possible.”

Aizala contemplated Dira’s words for several long moments, her tea cup still close to her face. Eventually she said, “I’m not sure if I ever believed that one has just one calling. It’s more that …” She hesitated. Searching for words as the frown on her face deepened. “Emergency medicine and trauma surgery not only felt like the right choice, the right path for me. But the only one. And now I feel like … what is that saying? … like someone pulled the rug from under me?” Looking straight at Dira, she continued, “I understand what you’re saying about shifting my perspective to see it as an opportunity instead of a crisis. I want to do that and I find myself struggling with that. A lot.”

“Small steps,” Dira said with a warm smile. “Realizing you need to find a new path, and that you’re allowed to have a new calling is only one pice of it. Give yourself time fo the rest to work itself out. Now, you’ve been doing some investigation into other specialities. Tell me where that is at right now,” she said, sipping her tip some more.

Aizala nodded thoughtfully and took a sip of her tea. “I talked to the Chief of Staff, Dr. Walker, about where to go from here and what had peeked my interested at the Academy apart from the surgical fields. I mentioned gynaecology. And because of my extensive background in alternative medicine and natural remedies, he suggested pharmacology. I’ve been doing a lot of reading in both fields since and I also ran a couple of simulations on the holodeck. I can imagine working in either field and at the same time I’m still missing … the spark or maybe the drive I have felt before. I’m also willing to admit that I’m probably overthinking all of this.”A short, soft laugh escaped her lips and she shook her head as she looked at Dira.

“Maybe you are just a little,” she said with a smile. Dira leaned back and studied Tija for a minute. “Why not try a little bit of everything? Sort of like the residency rotations we all did. You can spend a couple weeks or so each in different fields. The idea of something can be very different than the actual doing of something. And maybe something you liked less earlier in your career will feel more right now.”

A look of surprise suddenly appeared on Aizala’s freckled face, only to be almost immediately replaced by a slight frown. “It’s such an obvious thing to do. I should have thought of that myself. Thank you Commander. And I’m sorry if I wasted your time,” she replied and then sighed softly before drinking some more of her tea. She felt awkward that she hadn’t thought of that herself and part of her wanted to just get up and leave as she felt like she had bothered the First Officer long enough. But she also didn’t want to be rude. So for now she stayed put.
