Drake chuckled. “I’m sure if the brochure for Starfleet mentioned how much time officers spend filling out forms and reports, not nearly so many people would sign up. I’m very content remaining a Lieutenant for the duration of my service, though I have nothing but admiration for those who can tolerate the desk work.”

“Careful, there’s wiggle room for ranks that don’t have quite as much paper work,” Dira said with a grin.

“I know not every first officer has ambitions of being a captain, is that something you one day hope to accomplish?”

As they headed up to Deck Four, Dira nodded. “One day, yes. I think that was always the goal, but I also told myself going into this switch that if I found myself really happy with the job I was doing as a first officer, or maybe the posting was just that good, then I would let myself be happy with that without there having to be more.” She smiled at Drake. “There’s a lot to be said for being happy where you’re at and ready to change things up if needed.”

Commander Myqian, XO

“I agree. I just don’t think I could give up on being a surgeon. Not yet anyway.” Drake hoped she understood what he meant. “Nothing against career progress, or those who choose that path. I just find more fulfillment in sickbay than anywhere.”

“Ohhh, trust me, the debate with myself was a long and hard one. Ask me again in one year how I feel about it all,” she said with a laugh.

When they arrived on deck four, Drake said “I find myself… having no idea where anything is. I’ve never been around here.” He laughed lightly.

She laughed again too. “Well, new ship and definitely much bigger than the last one. That’s why I’ve taken to doing these walkabouts. Each day I’m trying to visit either a deck I have seen yet, or pop into an area I haven’t been recently. I figure after a month or so I should have the ship covered stem to stern. If I get lost after that? There’s no hope for me,” she said with a grin as they found the Mess Hall.

It was a fairly large space, meant to feed a number of people in a more expedient fashion rather than the casual lounge space that was also a part of the recreational facilities. Moving to the bank of replicators, Myqian spun on the ball of her foot and looked back at Marshall. “What are you up for? You grab the tables and I can grab lunch.”

Commander Myqian, XO

“Ah yes. Actually choosing food.” Drake pondered for a second. “Coffee and a chicken salad sandwich. I’ll find a vacant table.” He looked around a mostly full mess hall and wandered towards the large windows, finding a two top table and taking a seat. Quite a view. He quietly wondered if he appreciated fully that he was traveling through space.

Dira gathered their orders and wandered through the mess till she found Marshall, balancing a tray on each hand with proficiency. She handed him his coffee and sandwich and set her tray down (with her own coffee and a chicken and uttaberry salad) and took a seat. “Oh, a heads up which I will also share with Walker, but Starfleet Medical will has their next rotation of people coming up and since we are a medical ship, we’ll be getting a new batch of residents, interns and medical students. About a third I believe are slated to be surgical. Will you be able to accommodate their learning and training?”

Commander Myqian, XO

Drake sighed deeply. “Is it that time of year again? I will assign one of the other surgeons to do it. I’m not trying to get out of work, I just have a tendency to frighten surgical interns into other specialties. Or professions. But we will be able to get them in to observe and sometimes assist.”

-Drake Marshall

“When you say a tendency, what does that actually mean? What happens?” Dira asked as she speared some chicken with her fork. Intimidating Attendings were not unusual in medicine, nor were the ones who instilled a bit (or a lot) of fear into their juniors. But which brand of fear his took and why were important questions. Or so she felt.

Commander Myqian, XO

“I started my career as an emergency response surgeon. I feel no need to hide from interns that they will encounter hardship and people they cannot save, even despite the miracles of modern technology.” Drake sipped his coffee. “I also tend to yell at them for leaning on their gadgets too much. A tool is good, a dependency is a detriment. Interns end up terrified of me.”
