“I see,” the interviewer said before moving on to the next question, “Now could you comment on why you came to Ogawa? Was the transfer requested or were you sent here? What is it about the crew that makes them so talented?”

Dira smiled. “Well, this is where I was assigned. Command was working out where my first stint as an XO was going to be and the Ogawa had a sudden vacancy they needed to full. Given my background in psychiatry, it just made too much sense. As for the crew, well, it’s a medical ship, so the people brought together are often specialists in their fields. The mission of the ship is one that is going to be so much easier to fulfill on this new Nightingale-class ship then it was on the old one. More people with more varied experience and expertise means we can handle all sorts of situations.” It was personal, but Myqian was ‘selling’ the ship as they were told to.

“Can you go into that a little more? The diversity of missions and how the crew’s diversity helps with that?” Preem asked as she took some notes and turned the page.

“It’s like on any starship, really. If you just had a crew who all thought alike and had similar experiences, it’s very unlikely that you’d be able to handle challenging situations with great outcomes. My experience has been that when you have people with different backgrounds, cultural traditions and ways of thinking, you end up with better solutions to problems. Because inevitably, someone is going to think about a variable that others might miss. Or you’ll have people who can understand others because they can relate better because f similarities they have that others in the crew do not. I mean, take me for example,” Dira said, tapping her chest. “My mother is Betazoid and my father is Haliian but I was raised on Vega. So while I was given access to all the traditions and wonderful culture from both those peoples, being raised away from those homeworlds give me a far different perspectives than others might have. And I bring those experiences and values and traditions with me each day. And I think it makes me a better officer for embracing those differences.”

Preem gave an enthusiastic, if reserved, smile and nod of her head. “So you were a doctor, who came here for command placement… What was your first thought upon getting this posting? How do you feel about being so far away from the core worlds?” She looked down at her notes and added, “Once we get a few more of your background out of the way we will talk about the ships some, and give you a chance to just speak from the heart.”

While Dira was getting ready, Aizala had moved slightly further into the cargo bay till she found a place where she was out of the way, but could see and hear what was going on.

The stylist came up behind Aizala while Preem and Dira were talking and sighed heavily before looking to the doctor, “So what do you think, sugar? Going to get your picture on the big screen?”

Turning her head to look at the stylist instead, Aizala replied, “I’m not sure yet. It never even crossed my mind till now that anyone might be interested in filming me. I’m simply a doctor after all. Not much of interest to report about me.” If they really wanted her to, she probably wouldn’t say no, but for now she preferred not to make a decision either way and to observe instead.

“Oh sugar,” the stylist said said with a friendly pat on the shoulder, “You are a member of the crew aren’t ya? They want to talk to everyone. Everyone has a story to tell don’t you know?” She walked over to the table and picked up a cheese danish, “Mr. Golfink doesn’t like shy people. Everyone is a star he says. Everyone deserves their story told.”

One eyebrow raised, her expression clearly sceptical, Aizala replied, “I am. A member of the crew, I mean. But I’m certainly not a star. Nor shy. I’m a doctor. I don’t care about fame or being in a documentary or anything like that. All I care about is taking care of people. Saving lives. And I most certainly don’t want my story told unless it’s purely about medicine.”

The stylist shrugged, “I am just a stylist. I get to make people look nice on camera not ask them their life story.” She giggled slightly and shook her head, “Anyway, Golfink is a…” she paused frowning a moment, then continued, “Well, he is complicated. Some call it demanding, some call it genius. Most all agree that he is difficult to work with but that is why he has Preem, and the others. People don’t like him, but he doesn’t really care. He is like you that way, I suppose. His patient is his art.” She shrugged again watching the interview from afar before taking a bite of danish, “Love him or hate him, he gets what he wants. One way or another.”
