(snip, snip!)
The room she saw looked like an old fashioned clubhouse, made from a mixture of old oakwood and more modern Federation standard metals. Off to one side, there was a small bar, with a rather jovial looking Bolian bouncing from corner to corner, offering drinks and a friendly smile to the holographic patrons. At Kyle’s entrance and the whoosing sound accompanying the Holodeck arch vanishing behind them, the Bolian spun and grinned like a Chesire Cat, “Kyle! Same as usual?”
“I came prepared this time Zee, though I appreciate the offer.” Gesturing to Viasse, Kyle added, “Allow me to introduce Doctor Ruvre Viasse, my date for the evening.” At this, Zee’s grin seemed to widen even further, “Pleasure to meet you love, welcome to the Treble Clef Lounge, any friend of Kyle’s is a friend of mine,” Zee leaned into Kyle and tried to whisper, though she spoke loud enough for Viasse to hear, “Say the word Kyle, I’ll deactivate myself and leave you two lovebirds to it.” She made a cheeky clicking noise with her mouth and winked.

Ruvre absorbed the ambience, her gaze drifting along the sea of patrons and their charming domain. In the far corner, a young Bajoran touched at a piano’s ghostly keys. His eyes drifted from its old, tenderly polished wood to those attending a nearby table. Empty glasses gave way to idle chatter that permeated the air. But their voices were only a fragment of the Clubhouse’s gentle dissonance. Close, a couple exchanged deceivingly artless glances, but their smiles lit up the room. Beyond them, a middle-aged woman hovered over her drink and stared into its ambered depths, searching — or perhaps reminiscing. Ruvre could lose herself in the world before her, but she managed to pull her gaze to Kyle and the approaching woman.

“Likewise,” Viasse hummed as a delighted smile chased the wonder from her face. Her lips parted to mention the Lounge’s charm, but Zee then leaned to whisper something in Kyle’s ear. A blush soon tinted her cheeks. “May have to take you up on that offer,” her voice rang with a confidence that didn’t match her face, “but for now.. I’d love to know the best spot to share a drink.”

Zee tossed the young Doctor a rye grin and tossed a hand to the table in the centre of the room, that coincidentally had a single wax candle flickering with an off orange glow in the middle, two small glasses resting on either side, ‘Only the best for my two favourite customers,’ the Bolian hologram was pretending to gush, but Kyle couldn’t help but play along. Anders stepped over to the chair on the right hand side of the table and pulled out the chair, ‘Ladies first?’

Ruvre traced Zee’s unfolded hand to the table, a sceptical eyebrow lifting to her hairline. There wasn’t a fibre of her being that detested the candle, but she relished playing that card. Meandering over, she pressed a free hand to her chest and grinned. “Such a gentlemen,” she settled into the chair, “thank you.” Viasse tilted her head to the opposite chair and placed the whisky amid the glasses. “I can see why you ‘haunted’ this place,” she hummed, “it’s certainly got charm and the bartender is quite the character.”

— NDr. Ruvre Viasse, Internist

Kyle grinned, swiped the Whisky off the desk and uncorked the glass bottle, sighing at the oddly satisfying pop sound the bottle made. “She’s based on the geniune article, the real Zee and I thought it would be beneficial for her to be a self aware hologram. That way, she can be a bit like whatever ship I’m on’s version of Guinan, or Quark in some cases! Well, to forging new relationships,” Kyle had bored two measures of the whiskey and raised a glass with that cheeky flirtatous grin he had seemed to be wearing all evening so far.

“Really? I’d love to hear Zee’s take on the ship’s drama,” Viasse mused, her body rocking with tempered humour. “Ah,” she snatched the glass and lifted it to his, “and to whatever adventures they bring.” With a grin dancing across her lips, she tipped it back and faced the fiery trail that left a tingle in its wake. Impressed, she studied the glass for a moment before setting it down. “Fine choice,” she hummed. “Is this a favourite of yours?” She wore a smile similar to his, but sparked with a keen interest in getting to know him better.

— NDr. Viasse

“Quite,” Anders replied, “My family have Scottish relatives dating back to the 20th century. As you can tell, I never picked up the accent.” Kyle winked and poured a smaller measure for himself, “On my 18th birthday, my Dad brought me to a distillery belonging to some distant uncle of his, ever since, I’ve been keeping bottles of the stuff aside for special occasions.” Before Anders could reply, he noticed that the jazz band on the stage behind them was coming to the end of a song, “Ahh,” he said with a wry smile, “I think that’s my cue.”

“I have to hand it to your distant grand-uncle,” Ruvre frowned at the way the term rolled off her tongue but quickly brushed it away, “he’s mastered the art.” Her lips parted to impart another question onto Kyle, but his attention drifted to the stage before she seized the opportunity. She sensed only the glimmer of a growing idea. Curiously, she edged forward and echoed, “your cue?”

Within seconds, Kyle had hopped out of the chair and scrambled, albeit slightly awkwardly up on to the stage. The holographic band initially looked rather confused, but after a quick explaination from the young man, Anders relieved the man at the keys and spoke into the microphone with a soft, relaxed voice, “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, my name is Kyle Anders and I would like to dedicate the next song to a lovely lady in the audience this evening, you know who you are,” Kyle winked in Ruvre’s general direction. After counting the band in, Kyle led them in a slowed down ballad version of the Jazz, crooner standard, ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’

Viasse shared the band’s bewildered expression, but hers endured when theirs eased into a knowing glint. What had he told them? Ruvre shot an amusedly sceptical look Kyle’s way, her sombre gaze tracing the small band before her. Soon, his voice saturated the space between them. Tempered and smooth in its composure, it escorted a rosy hue to her dark cheeks. But sooner than to betray her reserve, Ruvre lifted the glass to her lips and grinned (somewhat bashfully) over its rim.

Anticipation couldn’t diminish the wonder that swept through Ruvre Viasse’s features. Her body swayed to the music, sensing the passion and grace that met the air in a tender embrace, a smile tethered to her lips. His song chased away her sheepishness, replaced it with a feeling of awe and reverence. She could entertain computerised tapes and records until her ears bled, but it would never compare to the beauty of a present, tangible voice — a voice like Kyle’s.

So, she lingered there, wholly unaware that she’d become lost in the moment, and simply listened.

— NDr. Ruvre Viasse

Kyle couldn’t help but smile as he watched the look on Ruvre’s face become more and more whistful. He had to admit to himself that he was resisting the urge to show off, but couldn’t help to add a few small piano licks into his performance. After two verses, Kyle allowed the band to take over for him and he crossed over to centre stage, outstreching his arm, “May I have this dance?” he asked with a child like grin.

His presence weighed on her mind, but Viasse held out for a note longer. When she peeled her eyes open, he stood centre stage with a hand outstretched and a boyish grin on his face. She couldn’t help but smile. His question traversed the air, filling her expression with giddy mischief. Before her tongue could release a coy remark, her feet guided her to him and she slipped her hand into his. “You may,” she hummed and stepped up to meet him face-to-face.

– NDr. Viasse

‘I hope you can waltz,’ Kyle said with a wink stretching his arm into the lead position. As the band played an instrumental version of ‘Under My Skin’ with a slower timbre behind it. The two waltzed together for a good couple minutes before they were face to face once more.
