Aizala nodded thoughtfully and took a sip of her tea. “I talked to the Chief of Staff, Dr. Walker, about where to go from here and what had peeked my interested at the Academy apart from the surgical fields. I mentioned gynaecology. And because of my extensive background in alternative medicine and natural remedies, he suggested pharmacology. I’ve been doing a lot of reading in both fields since and I also ran a couple of simulations on the holodeck. I can imagine working in either field and at the same time I’m still missing … the spark or maybe the drive I have felt before. I’m also willing to admit that I’m probably overthinking all of this.”A short, soft laugh escaped her lips and she shook her head as she looked at Dira.

“Maybe you are just a little,” she said with a smile. Dira leaned back and studied Tija for a minute. “Why not try a little bit of everything? Sort of like the residency rotations we all did. You can spend a couple weeks or so each in different fields. The idea of something can be very different than the actual doing of something. And maybe something you liked less earlier in your career will feel more right now.”

A look of surprise suddenly appeared on Aizala’s freckled face, only to be almost immediately replaced by a slight frown. “It’s such an obvious thing to do. I should have thought of that myself. Thank you Commander. And I’m sorry if I wasted your time,” she replied and then sighed softly before drinking some more of her tea. She felt awkward that she hadn’t thought of that herself and part of her wanted to just get up and leave as she felt like she had bothered the First Officer long enough. But she also didn’t want to be rude. So for now she stayed put.

Myqian reached up and tapped her rank pips. “That’s why they give us these,” she said with a wink. “And you haven’t wasted my time. On the contrary, this”-she gestured between them-“is my job. The crew and their overall well being affects the ship and all of that is my job. It’s just a little different than it used to be. But Aizala”-she leaned forward a little-“you’ve been through a lot and sometimes that means we need to give ourselves the grace adn time to let things be murky and difficult for awhile until we find the best way forward.”

“I know,” Aizala replied as she allowed her guard to slip a little. “I have given similar advice to people regarding their journey of physical recovery so many times. I know healing takes time and can be rushed only so much. Even when I heal a broken bone with an osteoregenrator the body still needs time to fully recover. And yet here I am, struggling to give myself that time and grace. I feel so useless. I’ve been taking care of people for as long as I can remember. And now I can’t in the way I’m used to. In the way I want to. It’s frustrating. All because of something that happened a life time ago coupled with a single thoughtless comment.” For the first time some of the frustration and anger she felt rose close-ish to the surface. But she quickly shoved them back down.

Dira’s ebony gaze was intense and full of compassion “Aizala, if you’ll allow me a moment to be a therapist for a second? Maybe the lesson you are being asked learn here is to care for yourself as you would your patients. We health folk are terrible at being patients a lot of the time, but sometimes we need tp practice what we preach, yes?”
