Drake sighed deeply. “Is it that time of year again? I will assign one of the other surgeons to do it. I’m not trying to get out of work, I just have a tendency to frighten surgical interns into other specialties. Or professions. But we will be able to get them in to observe and sometimes assist.”

-Drake Marshall

“When you say a tendency, what does that actually mean? What happens?” Dira asked as she speared some chicken with her fork. Intimidating Attendings were not unusual in medicine, nor were the ones who instilled a bit (or a lot) of fear into their juniors. But which brand of fear his took and why were important questions. Or so she felt.

Commander Myqian, XO

“I started my career as an emergency response surgeon. I feel no need to hide from interns that they will encounter hardship and people they cannot save, even despite the miracles of modern technology.” Drake sipped his coffee. “I also tend to yell at them for leaning on their gadgets too much. A tool is good, a dependency is a detriment. Interns end up terrified of me.”

-Drake Marshall

She smiled, ever so slightly amused. “We were both interns once, I think there’s a small part of it that’s a part of the process. Still, this is a teaching environment. A little fear isn’t terrible, but perhaps you can consider better ways of conveying that learning?” she said with a grin.

Commander Myqian, XO

“I’m sure a better way does exist, but placed in front of a group of interns, expected to educate them, I have my standard plays upon which I rely heavily.” Drake laughed. “We all had that teacher who was not who you wanted to see on your schedule.”

-Drake Marshall

“Yeah, but most of them are still good doctors and worth learning from. The trick is to balance out the terror so your students still remember you’re worth learning from,” she said with a wink before taking a bite of her salad.

Commander Myqian, XO

“I think they take a few valuable lessons away, but rarely do they stick around at their internship assignment. Something about ‘intense pressure.’ That’s life as a surgeon. Drake ate a little of his sandwich before asking “Are you responsible for any of the schoolchildren or is that something a red uniform gets you out of?”
