After her medical check Alexis made her way over to the desk and asked the holographic receptionist if Dr Walker was available. Lt Petrakos wanted her to run her idea for adapting medications and electrolyte content of water rations for Romulan physiology by medical before starting the process. And since Dr Walker was the head of medical she decided to go see him. Plus she was familiar with Walker and comfortable that she could clearly and concisely discuss the topic with him.

Lt Bonner

“He’s free,” the VI said. “Would you like to enter?”

Alexis grinned, “Yes I would VI. Thank you.” After being announced and VI leading the way, Alexis made her way to Walker’s office. She knocked politely on the door frame. “Hello Dr. Walker. How have you been?”

“Dr. Bonner! Well, you’re a sight for sore eyes,” Brad said, standing to greet here. “That was a rather quick trip.” She’d only been gone a few weeks, at least he thought it had only been a few weeks. Starbase time tended to run together and blur to him.

She smiled, she remembered that the starbase tended to throw him off, everyone actually. There had been so much extra going on there. “Actually it’s been a couple months (OOC at least that’s what I’ve been going with to account for her stepping down from the AMO position). I’ve been reassigned to science as a medical researcher. Which is why I’m here. I was talking to Lt Petrakos, he said we are on our way to provide relief for a group of Romulans. That got me thinking, our medicines don’t quite work well for their physiology, but it’s not hard to adjust. I could do it to have some basics already adapted when we get there. I could also adjust the electrolyte content of our water rations to meet their needs.” Typical Alexis, she never was good at small talk and always eager to get down to business and to work.

“I can give you lab space down here if you’d like, we’ve got plenty. If I could offer a suggestion?” he began, “We’ve recently taken on board a Bajoran doctor who’s trying to figure out where to take her career as she recovers from a traumatic incident on an Academy ship, and she’s expressed a possible interest in that kind of work, if you’d like to bring her onto your team?”

“Space in the biochemistry lab would be great, but I can make do wherever you have room. I have space in the science labs but up here would be more convenient. I’m happy to have the help. Just send her along whenever she has time.” Alexis wasn’t thrilled about having someone to work with, as she preferred to work alone so she could work faster. She was not against it either. She’d learned from Walker to put that aside and look at the staff as a whole and individually so she would willing take on someone else for the duration of the project. “I will also need your authorization to access the medications for adjustment since I’m not strictly medical department anymore.”
Lt Bonner

“Consider it done,” Brad said, making a note to send Dr. Tija Bonner’s way later. “In both cases. Should I send over a portion of our Vulcanoid medicines to start?”

Chief of Staff

Alexis nodded thoughtfully, “Yes that would be a great place to start. Also if we have any Klingon donor blood. They have a matching ribosome for Romulan’s that will help the medicines metabolize correctly. If not is there a way to see if there is anyone that would donate? I understand there is poor feelings between Romulan’s and Klingon’s but it will make our work easier. If not I will make do with what we have and hopefully no one is in dire need. Assuming my appointment with the counseling staff doesn’t run late, I can start this evening.” Work, it was time to get back to work after everything that had happened. Alexis was already compiling the chemical equations needed to make the adjustments.
Lt Bonner, Med research

“I don’t think we have any Klingon blood aboard, since to my knowledge we don’t have any Klingons, but if we do I’ll send a unit or two your way,” Brad said. It certainly wasn’t like he’d been able to memorize the expanded crew roster or their similarly expanded supply stores yet. He wouldn’t be able to either, not in the way Bonner probably would, but he’d make a concerted effort for the most important members of each category.

Alexis nodded running over the equipment, supply, and stores inventory she’d had to check before she left. “I believe some was sent in stasis when the ship arrived. I’d only need a vial, but I don’t want to dip into anything that is limited in supply. If it’s not available we soon will have plenty of patients and perhaps they would be a donor to help their fellow Romulans. A primary source is much better than a compatible one.”

“I’m not delaying you from that appointment, am I?” he asked.

Alexis glanced at the chronometer. “Not yet. I still have a bit of time. But I promise not to miss any of my appointments, Dr Walker.” She had the good sense to look sheepish. Alexis knew she was bad about getting lost in her work or whatever side project she had going and forgetting everything else. She wanted to explain to him why, the real reason why, she had left, but she wasn’t sure how much she was allowed to talk about or not. So she aired on the side of sharing nothing. “I know I’m medical research now, and you have a very large and capable staff, but I am still a doctor if you ever need…extra hands.” it was a genuine but awkward sentiment and lacking some of Alexis’ previous confidence.
Lt Bonner, med research

“Well, I’m sure our omni-present AI can help in that regards, so long as you have your commbadge on,” Brad said. “And if we are ever getting overwhelmed, you’ll absolutely be my first call. Even over one of the EMHs.”

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

Alexis nodded, “I always have my commbadge. The EMH programs are really improved over what I’ve used previously.” Then she stopped, “I think perhaps I should save those reflections for later, or I could sit here all day analyzing the changes to the EMH program. Then I will be late for my other appointments. But with any luck I’ll be done and can get to the lab this evening to get started.”
Lt Bonner

“Alright. I’ll let. Dr. Tija know to look you up. If you could give me regular updates on your process, I’m sure I’ll appreciate it when we get there and I know exactly how much of what medicines we have available,” Brad said.
