Like it? ‘Like it’ didn’t begin to touch on how she felt about the crumpled piece of material in her hand. She looked at it in her fist and then at Solomon and back. Opening her hand flat she watched it flatten out and the light disappear. She curled her fingers slightly watching it as small sparks of light appeared and then disappeared when she flattened her hand again. Somewhere in her head, where she wasn’t paying attention, she was probably creating a list of questions about it, or she would be later.

She stood right where she had been loved into utter stillness. She glanced from Solomon to the light and back again. “You love me.”

Kane chuckled while getting them banana and blueberry smoothies. “Yeah… I guess I do. So if my Lex-speak is doing me ok… that means ‘Hey Kane, thanks. That means a lot. I appreciate you listening and caring enough about me to not dismiss my fears. Thank you for caring about me, I love you very much.’ “. He chuckled as he turned around and handed her a glass. “And I’m sure there’s something in there about how good we are in the other room, too.”

So not a pocket because that wasn’t next to her skin, not her sleeve because if she took her jacket off it might fall out and she’d loose it. She moved towards the chairs, slipping off her uniform jacket and tossed it across the back of a chair. Untucking the side of her shirt she slipped the small square under her waist band next to her hip and then tucked her shirt back in. She took the smoothie and began to drink it. Solomon had made it habit, he simply made something, gave it to her, and she consumed it. He made sure she ate. She didn’t even realize he was doing it most of the time because she was focused on work. Then there were times she did notice and it created butterflies and warmth in her stomach.

She turned a soft smile on him, slightly flushed not embarrassed, but out of…happiness, wasn’t the correct word but close enough. He understood ‘Lex-speak’ and that made her grin a little more, “Yeah something like that.” She was glad he understood because she really didn’t know what to say about the light. There were not adequate words to describe how much it meant to her. Aaaaannnndddd then it was…GO. “How long does the battery last? How long for it to recharge? Does it need body heat to stay on or could I crumple it up and put it in a small sample container and make a lantern, incase I need both hands?”

Kane shook his head slightly and smiled as he drank. “Should last about six hours if you don’t have it at full intensity. Takes about ten minutes, five if you increase your heat output. You could do that, I guess… but the light won’t last as long. Heat keeps it going longer.” He took another drink and looked at her uniform jacket on the chair and said “You keep throwing your clothes around like that, people may start to think you live here.” and he smiled at her.

“So pay attention to how long and how tightly I squeeze it incase I need it for awhile.” Her gaze met his, “I can think of one way to increase my body heat,” and then turned really red and then turned away looking at her jacket confused. She started to pick it up and then realized he was teasing her. She turned back to him, “I am, for a while anyway. You said so.” She lifted the glass to her mouth and drank, poorly attempting to hide her embarrassment. Her life with Solomon in it was so…unexpected. It made her confused and giddy and happy and unbalanced, and she liked it.

Arms wrapped around her waist and Kane’s voice half-whispered in her ear “And what one way is that you thought of, hmm? And is it a solo thing? Or do you need help from… a partner?” and he kissed the side of her neck.

Alexis laughed, it was soft quick and more of a giggle. “I was thinking a case of the Andorian flu will give me a fever hot enough to fry my brain it should heat up that amazing light you gave me.” She smiled against his neck, kissing her way up towards his ear, “But I like my first idea better…” she was quiet for a minute, prodding herself into saying what she was thinking, “but it doesn’t need ‘a’ partner, it just needs you.”

Bonner

“Good answer…” he whispered back and lifted her up off the ground and carried her into the bedroom…
