Ruvre couldn’t waltz. But she managed to pick up enough from her partner to muddle through, carried by nothing more than sheer will. Soft laughter and playfully bemused expressions guided her through the song. Her gaze never waved. (Except to ensure she wasn’t trampling over his toes.) When the music tapered to a close, leaving an echo of its prime wafting through the air, Viasse glanced up at him with a Cheshire grin.

Without a word, she carried herself to her tiptoes and pressed a chaste kiss to his cheek. “You’ll have to teach me how you do that,” she pulled away to gesture to his feet, “that wasn’t a waltz; that was magic.”

“Well,” Kyle said, “You’re not bad for a first timer.” He winked and leaned in, trying to give the impression that he was going in to return the kiss, just not on the cheek. Kyle felt an unexpected, yet at the same time warm feeling rise up from his stomach. Ruvre was beautiful, but he didn’t want to scare her off by moving too fast. He stopped just shy of going for the kiss, as if trying to gage her reaction before moving any further.

Blood pooled at Ruvre’s cheeks, daubing them with a deep, uneven russet. She wavered. Instinct tempted her to reciprocate, to act without reservation, but hesitance deterred her. Was it him? Gods no. Kyle captivated her with his whimsical, somewhat charming streak. He was goofy, albeit deliberate and far superior in that baffling art of waltzing. It wasn’t him. Ruvre sucked in a soft breath and pulled away. She struck a smile and brushed it off with an awkwardly remorseful, “so.. about that dinner.”

Kyle pulled away slowly, he brushed the back of his head and chuckled, “Of course, Zee, a Romulan Ale for the lady and another whiskey for me.” Anders held out his hand and allowed to think before taking it, “Shall we?”

Armed with a smile, Ruvre combatted the chagrin that flooded her being and nodded. She took his hand and escorted him back to the table. There, she drew away and (oh-so-cheekily) pulled his chair out for him. “Gentlemen first,” she sang.

“Too kind lass,” Anders paused awkwardly for a second, “Listen, I like you, but I don’t want to scare you off, so let me just apologise for jumping the gun there.” Anders sat and poured the Romulan Ale as soon as it came over to their table, “Here’s to trying things slowly.” He winked.

Easing into her chair, Viasse faltered when the word ‘listen’ left his tongue. Was this it? Had she missed her chance? But her stiffness was fleeting, leaving a relieved albeit lopsided grin in its wake. “I appreciate it,” Ruvre nudged the glass until it was snug in her palm, “and I like you. I’m just a little… out of practice.” She carried her glass to the air, “to taking it slow.”

Ruvre tilted the glass back to take a sip, then released it to the tabletop. “So.. you’re a dancer,” she struck out a finger, “a singer, and a security officer. Are there any other talents you’re hiding?”

Kyle laughed, he was glad to say that he felt a little more relaxed now that the awkward establishing feelings conversation was over. “Well,” he began, rolling up his sleeve, “I did have a little bit of a fascination with magic when I was younger.” With a flourish that would make even Harry Houdini blush, Kyle procured a small white rose from his sleeve and stuck the stalk between his teeth with a grin.

Delight tickled her eyes, sputters of soft laughter swelling between them. She’d experienced magic tricks before — most at the hands of spirited children as Kaferia’s weekend markets — but none with so much bravado as Kyle’s. It was charming… in a silly, lighthearted kind of way. And she couldn’t help but grin. “That’s pretty good!” Her voice grew bubbly. “When you say ‘fascination’, do you mean, like, read all the works on magic,” she waved her hands, “or learn a trick and do a show for the whole block, kind of fascination?”
