She shook her head. “Not since my residency. And even then I was so busy I didn’t get a chance to do a lot of exploring. It was just after the war,” she said idly as she took in the space with a thoughtful expression. “People like me were very busy i the aftermath.”

Kyle stopped glancing at consoles and whirled on his feet at this, “Did you serve in the war?”
-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-
Dira bobbed her head back and forth. “A little. I was an intern on Earth at Starfleet Medical during the last year and into the following year. And then I was doing my residency doing post-war trauma counselling. I was part of a mobile psychiatric team. We dealt with crews who were struggling as a whole, active duty personnel whose families were struggling with the changes in loved ones. Veterans unable to adjust to civilian life again. There were a lot of physical wounds from those years of conflict, but a great deal more psychological. But I will say that I was present on Earth, in San Francisco during the Breen attack. Anyone with med skills pitched in. It was… brutal, to say the least.”

“I.... can imagine,” Kyle hated to bring this back up, “I lost… both my parents during the last year. They served on the Nightengale, both Security Officers. Feels good to be.. following in their footsteps.”
-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-
She nodded slowly. “I can imagine,” Dira said softly. “Having a strong motivation to take your life in a particular direction can be good. It gives you goals and a way to measure your own sense of success. But might I offer some advice as a career officer in Starfleet?”

Kyle stopped, turning to face his XO, “Of course ma’am, I’d be honoured.”

Her gaze was soft as she considered the young officer. “Find your own reason. Doing something your parent did connects you to them. But they had their own reasons for joining. Sometimes the reasons we stay in Starfleet are different than the ones that made us join. You’re young still and you have a lot of career ahead of you. If you want to be successful and fulfilled, find you own reasons for staying that have nothing to do with your parents. Honour their memory, but don’t live for them and in their shadow.”

Kyle smiled thankfully, “I know Commander, thank you. I can’t wait to carry on seeing what’s out there.”
-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-
Dira smiled. “Well, I’m going to let you carry on. Keep exploring. Try different decks and get to know all the small spaces you haven’t seen yet.”
With a bow of her head, Myqian slipped out of engineering, off to take care of the next tasks on her list. But her smile remained as she left the young officer to et his bearings.
