Aizala raised one eyebrow, but didn’t say anything. Instead she just mulled this over a little.

Dira chuckled. “There are social psychology branches that look at why people choose to put themselves in the line of fire socially, so-to-speak. A lot of it has to do with the bonding that commiseration brings. But as for karaoke specifically, some people go because they are good at singing and just want to sing, others know they aren’t great and because it’s not assumed you should be in order to participate it gives them permission to, and others do it because it scares them and they are trying to break out of their comfort zone and become more confident. It can be very freeing,” she said with a wide smile. Where she fell in this description depended on how others viewed her singing, but Dira knew she could sing, even if she wasn’t about to go on a tour and win awards doing so.

“Ahh, yeah…” Bob said quietly with a smirk. He sipped from his drink again, partly in an effort to hide just how amused he was by how “very freeing” it had plainly been for Dira.

With one eyebrow still raised and her head tilted slightly, Aizala mused, “I think I see what you mean. Does one have to sing if one goes to a karaoke … event?” She wasn’t entirely sure if event was the right word, but it was the best she could think of.

“Not necessarily, no,” Bob answered. “Though people who know you may encourage you to do so, it is not necessarily required. I myself prefer to view karaoke as a kind of spectator sport.”

– Robert Mason, CE

“Good,” Aizala nodded, a hint of relief playing across her freckled face.

Dira leaned towards Aizala and spoke conspiratorially as she gazed at Mason. “I’m waiting patiently for the day when I can get Bob on stage, and when it comes it’s going to be spectacular.” Was she teasing? Oh yes. Was she also serious? Definitely.

Aizala chuckled softly and looked from Dira to Bob and back again. She wasn’t entirely sure what to say, so instead she took a sip of her drink. Hoping that either Dira or Bob say something else or that she herself would think of something to say.

“That’s still going to be pretty difficult, even though I can tell you’ve already started conspiring to try it,” he said plainly to Dira. “I mean, I’m assuming you are somehow responsible for this particular form of beverage.” He held up and wiggled his glass as he said that, clearly indicating its very alcoholic nature.

Dira just grinned.

“Not that I’m complaining.”

– Robert Mason, CE

“Perks of the job,” she said lightly. “That and knowing each other as well as we do,” Dira said with a laugh. And she knew that Aizala wouldn’t have the context so she shifted her gaze to the doctor. “If it wasn’t clear yet, Mason and I both came to the Ogawa from the Calypso. I still maintain that it was the friendliest poaching there ever was,” she said with a wink before sipping her drink.

“I had a feeling the two of you have been knowing each other for a while,” Aizala smiled and then fell silent again. While she was enjoying herself, this type of conversation was not her forte as she had never put any effort into developing her social skills outside of what was needed in sickbay. And that was a completely different situation compared to small talk and friendly bantering at a bar.
