Thirteen minutes and some cold water later, Kane emerged from the bathroom and grinned at Alexis. “To be continued…” he said with a grin and pulled on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. He went to the replicator and got a small, rare sirloin diced on a plate. He went over to Frigga and set it down. “Here you go, girl. Don’t think I forgot about you.” and he scratched her head. He looked back at Alexis and smiled. “You know… I think I’m going to like having you here… you know… permanently.”

Alexis grinned back at him. She slipped into olive green leggings and a heather grey v-neck shirt. She grabbed her combadge, ever present stylus and left the washroom clear of her clutter, moving into the living room she dropped her things into her bag and went over to where she’d been baking. Frigga leaned hard into scratches, seemingly ignoring the steak in favor of the attention. When Kane turned his attention back to Alexis, Frigga turned her attention to the steak.

Taking a towel, folded in half, Alexis took the two trays out of the small oven. She left the door open to let the heat dissipate. She smiled over at him, tucking her hair behind her ear. She looked from him to Frigga and back. “We like being here. I like being here. I’m…calm here.” She moved the buns to a wire rack to allow the bread to cool evenly. Then everything she was done with, trays, bowls, the small oven went into the matter recycler. It seemed a waste, for the reusable things but Alexis didn’t get to bake that often. She’d actually cooked more since Solomon insisted she stay with him than she had in years. She looked over at him again, “I like permanant.” Then into the quiet was the sound of meat sizzling on the grill plate.

Kane grabbed his sketch book and pencils and flopped on the couch. He started drawing and then, after a few minutes of silence as Alexis cooked and Frigga ate, he said -

“So… ever been married before?”

His eyes didn’t leave the page, a small furrow in his brow as he tried to get something just right.

Kane

Alexis didn’t answer. There was a significant pause that altered the rhythm of her movements. He knew the answer to that. Didn’t he? Yes he did. Solomon was smart and observant and he read people, understood them even if he didn’t like them, what or how they did it. She overcooked the first one, medium rare instead of rare. That was okay that was how she liked it. She flipped the next one a couple times, rare and pulled it off the grill and then tossed the last one on the grill. She took the bread knife to slice the buns and paused. Why did this bother her. She supposed it was a logical question given their earlier conversation. But it was really bothering her. “No.” And she didn’t say anything else, she wasn’t ready or comfortable or calm (who knew?) Enough to delve into it.

She placed the burger for Frigga to the side. Then infront of Solomon she placed his - rare, with mustard, pickle, lettuce, onion. Two glasses of water and her plate. Then she worked on cleaning the last of the mess.

Kane kept sketching as he waited for her to sit down. “Did he ruin the thought of it for you?” he asked, still not looking up from the drawing.

Alexis collected empty bowls, utensils, wiped down the table. The grill was still hot and she left it. She wanted to go work. She didn’t want to talk about this…or....she left the towel beside the grill to pick it up later. She moved over to the couch and sat down curled into the corner. She may not want to discuss it or have a firm answer for him, but she always answered as honestly as possible. “I haven’t considered it....I’ve had no reason to.” She was picking at the hem of her shirt, quiet, her expression alternating through a myriad of emotions and thoughts that she wasn’t completely at ease with.

Kane set the sketch book to the side and moved to begin eating. “This smells amazing, Lex. Thanks. This is a hell of a surprise.”

Alexis nodded. “You’re welcome. I didn’t mind. I like baking. I haven’t made these before, but the yeast to the flour reacted cleanly. I don’t know about the flavor.” She picked up her plate and took a bite. For the moment the topic was dropped, but she knew Solomon wasn’t going to leave it alone. There was something he wanted to know or point to prove…

The sketch was of a pair of hands, one male and one female. The female hand was fair, the male heavily tattooed with familiar designs. The fingers were interlaced; and on the second finger from the outside on the woman’s hand was a ring.

She glanced at the picture. Alexis was always amazed by what he drew. Ever since that night in the lounge when he’d held her hand she’d wondered how he would draw it. She smiled looking at it and then....”Why?” Her voice was strained. “No don’t … Don’t answer…” And then she actually took a bite of food to avoid saying anything else.

Kane chewed and then said around the burger “Because someday I’d like to ask. Not today, or any time soon. But someday… when we’re both ok with it… I’d like to ask you.” and he chewed and swallowed.
