There are very few things in life that makes Octavia genuinely feel alive besides saving lives (even if for now it is during holodeck training programs) she always feels her best singing. She loved it and fortunately for her that hadn’t changed since she became joined. There was always the one place she’d go to and that wasn’t the holodeck but the Cargo bay, whenever it was mostly empty she found the acoustics really suited her voice.

Being late, in the grand scheme of the ship’s clock which kept them sane Octavia made sure she was always alone. It wasn’t really out of embarrassment she’d performed back on Trill and loved singing in front of people but more because she liked singing alone, or at least in small groups it always felt more intimate. Walking down the corridor with a small bag over her shoulder its contents were hidden to everyone else but contained her music player, a small celebratory bottle of Trill duneberry wine that her parents had given her before she left for the academy, a half-eaten bag of spicy nachos and a chocolate bar.

Waving as she went she was feeling good, she had no reason not to be. She’d passed her exams and was well and truly on her way to becoming a doctor!

Entering the cargo bay she made sure to check about and for now, it seemed empty, she didn’t know how long she’d stay but experience showed she could be alone for anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours. Setting up in what she considered ‘her spot’ tucked away towards the back corner she’d took out her snacks and drink and placed them on the single-tier storage shelf. She took out the music player and set it to a random. She usually ended up sticking to one song, pausing and working on her singing as she practised.

As it played she bobbed her head to the tune whilst opening the bottle of wine and taking a sip, the wine itself was non-alcoholic the last thing she needed was someone to walk into some crazy girl getting drunk. She never did have a high tolerance to alcohol which meant her nights out were cheap but messy. She snuck her hand into the half-eaten bag of crisps and followed the mouthful down with another drink.

The song finished and she felt like she could remember the lyrics, it was a song from Earth that a friend and introduced her to during her time at the academy and taking part in the academies Acapella groups. It was called wagon wheel and it was very ‘country’ or at least so she was told. The original was sung by a male vocalist but she found her voice suited it well, especially with its upbeat tempo and fun lyrics.

Headin’ down south to the land of the pines
I’m thumbin’ my way into North Caroline
Starin’ up the road and pray to God I see headlights…

She was on her third pause and rewind when she didn’t notice the door to the cargo bay open.

So, rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama any way you feel
Hey… mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a southbound train
Hey… mama rock me

It was after his friend had left the ship the Solal had discovered the acoustics of the cargo bay. And so, in his free time, had had begun sneaking down there with his violin to practice. A hobby he found embarrassing and unVulcan-like, he kept it a deep held secret, and only his old friend had known. As he stepped into the cargo bay with the case containing the instrument, he was utterly surprised to see none other than Octavia Raain. By the time he had entered, it was too late, she’d definitely have seen him. Shoot.

Mid verse and clearly lost in her own world Octavia let out a shriek as Solal entered the room exposing her and her acoustic secret. Glowing a bright red and hiding her face from her instructor Octavia wished she was anywhere but here. That was until after a few moments and she realised he was carrying something. “Soooo” she said her music player still playing.

Solal did then about the most human thing he could have: He put the violin behind his back. Because his form was rather thin and lanky, it did not do well to hide the violin. Whether Octavia knew what it was or not, was up to how familiar with instruments she was. “Miss Raain. Your… studies doing well?” He asked awkwardly, stepping further into the cargo bay. If he weren’t so worried about his own image, he may have noticed that Octavia was almost as embarrassed as he was. But he was too focused on hoping she hadn’t seen the violin.

“My Studies?” She said echoing his question, the room then echoing it further, “Theyre doing great. I just completed the exam so theres that and yeah. How are your studies going?” Octavia asked but then an internal red alert went up, Solal wasn’t a in training like she was. How was she messing a simple conversation up so bad. “I mean your work, hows work going?” If there was an example under LCARS for sheer and out-right embarrassment there would just be a picture of Octavia at this very moment. “What are you hiding?” She asked having just only now noticed Solal seemed similar in appearance.

  • Octavia Raain.

Solal hardly seemed to notice her little flub. “I see. Then with any luck you’ve passed?” He said. He considered her quite studious and hardworking, he thought she deserved to pass her big exam. Upon mention of his hiding something, he shifted the arm behind his back. Playing dumb would be a mistake, clearly she’d seen it, hadn’t she, or not really? Could he lie about what it was? What else had the silhouette of a violin? Nothing in the medical bay, for sure. He chose to simply ignore the question and hope the student did not pry further.

The slightly younger Trill frowned at his unwillingness to answer her question. “What are you hiding?” Octavia asked again tilting her head to see if the different angle provided an answer. When it didn’t she grew in confidence and stepped forward, she reached out with her left arm trying to cox the item from behind his back. It seemed to be a easy manoeuvre if it hadn’t been for her clumsy two left feet, she tripped into Solal with a groan, one arm pinned between them anover resting on his shoulder.
