Lieutenant Commander Soulis lay on the biobed as the ortho-regenerator worked on his broken jaw and his broken ribs. He was in pain, but more than that he was angry. He winced as the device helped fill the crack in his jaw he received when a particularly hard elbow landed there the day before. ‘I don’t know who that bas^%$d was, but he will get his. No one does this to me and walks away…’ he thought to himself.

‘So… Alexis has a man, does she? Well… that won’t last.’ he thought some more. ‘I need that brain of hers. I have too much riding on this to see it fall apart just because I can’t figure out the proper-‘ and he opened his eyes when the door to his room slid open.

An older human man and a Bajoran woman came in, both dressed in the uniform of Star Fleet Intelligence, but Soulis didn’t recognize either. The woman looked at Soulis but said nothing… the man chuckled. “So… how ya feelin’?” he asked and then chuckled again before a look form the woman caused him to stop and clear his throat. “So, Lieutenant Commander. Want to tell us why you are lying here looking like you just tried to stop a shuttle crash with your face?”

Soulis glared but looked at the man. “I was assaulted, I’ll have you know.” he said through closed teeth. “And while I do not know who you are, I can tell you that if I find out the guilty party works for you, whoever you are, then I will be filing a full report with your superiors.” and he glared wide eyed at the man.

The Bajoran stepped forward and said “You know quite well that isn’t an option. And you would do quite well to stay in your own lane. The man you… had an exchange with… does indeed work for me. And he will continue to work for me long after your paths cease to cross. And looking at you, and knowing him like I do, I would say he gave you a warning. Next time, I doubt he will be so restrained. So do as I say… and stay away from the Ogawa and Lieutenant Bonner.” Soulis’s eyes narrowed and he started to speak but the woman shook her head. “No no… don’t talk. I know what you are going to say anyway. And yes, I know all about you and Lieutenant Bonner. And if it wasn’t for your current assignment, I doubt anyone would try and stop me from putting some much needed distance between you and her… and all of society. But alas…” and she moved and sat on the edge of the bed on the side of him Kane had kicked.

“Leave him, her, and that ship alone… and in that order. You are tugging a tail, and you don’t know what it’s attached to. I would be careful.” Her eyes moved slowly down his form until she came to the regenerator working on his ribs. “You did get off light… ” she said and stood up and began to walk to the door. “Good day, Lieutenant.” and Soulis raised his head and said “Lieutenant Commander!”. The woman stopped in the doorway and turned.

“Only if you do what you’re told, Ensign.”

Unknown Parties

Three weeks later…

Lieutenant Commander Soulis of Star Fleet Intelligence was pissed. He paced back and forth in his office like a freshly caged predatory cat wanting the taste of flesh. The office, normally a textbook example of organization and borderline- OCD cleanliness was in a state of disarray. Multiple PaDDS lay scattered across the desk and dozens of data chips lay strewn over the desk, the floor and the small coffee table. He had spent every waking hour trying to find out more about ‘Dr. Solomon Kane’… and it was obvious he had friends in very high places because before two years ago there was nothing. So he was obviously some kind of agent… but whose? There was no record of the people who came to see him and warn him off. There was no record of Kane before two years ago. And of him currently? It was an obvious fabrication… and poorly done and transparent one at that. But someone was protecting him… but who? And then the thought came to him… why protect him? He was important to someone… okay. But why? Well… most likely it was similar to him and his need for Bonner… her mind. So Kane knew something. That was problematic. From the records on Kane he could find, the man was involved in a multi-disciplanry approach to a lot of things. He was adept in medicine, but very skilled in Science and Engineering. So that made it very hard to isolate what could be…

Bonner… of course.

They were an item… at least until Soulis had Bonner with him. And he knew Alexis would never be interested in a buffoon. So she had to be familiar with his work… that meant that they worked together. That could only mean the Ogawa. Soulis swept his arm across his desk sending PaDDs and chips flying and began to construct a data search with some very specific requirements.

The computer chirped in another facility so far away that Soulis would not even know the Federation knew about it, let alone had facilities there. A face familiar to Kane glanced at the alert and grinned, then cursed. “Man… why is he right so often? He’s not a shrink! How’d he know th-“ “Because he grew up having to learn people from a glance to stay alive, Mr. Smith. You know this. That is why he is such an asset.” ‘Smith’ turned and looked at the Bajoran woman sitting on the couch across the coffee table from him and said “Asset… well you are half right. And you are sure Kane and Bonner are more important than Soulis? ‘Cause this is only going to end really bad for that guy.” The Bajoran woman smiled and said “Oh… trust me. Those two are leaps and bound more important than that arrogant piece of s#!+. Besides…” and she leaned forward and got a grin on her face that always made ‘Smith’s‘ blood cool, “… I want to see what they have in store for him. Creativity is a must for what we have planned for them. I’m just glad the good Commander was generous enough to put himself in their crosshairs before we had to set something up. Now go on.. do it.” and she shooed him on with her hand.

‘Smith’ turned to the computer and uploaded the file Kane had sent him. He looked back at the woman. “Sent.” The woman smiled and said “Excellent. Now let’s see what happens next…”

A few hours later, the search engine on Soulis’s computer chirped. A result. Soulis leapt off the couch and moved to the desk. There was a secure file on the screen. It was above his clearance level to access, but that never stopped him before, did it? After a few more minutes the file opened… and Soulis’s mouth dropped open as he read the information before him. For almost an hour, he read scientific data without moving. Then he moved to the personal files. His jaw set as he heard Alexis describe Kane.

I have returned to the USS Ogawa. I am no longer working directly in the medical department, but I have found a better use for my mind. I am in medical research now within the science department. I have been assigned to the R&D lab. This means I will have two people to answer to, but as long as they let me work I don’t mind. R&D also means that I can work on my own projects as I determine. There are many old projects that I never had the time to pursue that I am prioritizing now.

I had a date tonight. I…I misunderstood. I thought it was just another joke, someone making fun or taking on a dare with the ‘genius doctor.’ He was mad but he let me explain and…and then he stayed. We ate dinner, but…he talked to me. a long shaky breath is heard no one ever talks to me. They want to know about my work and how I do my work and what crazy project I finished on my own. Can I help them with their own work? Frigga adores him already. Bowled him over in the arboretum when…when he walked us there. He held my hand the whole time. It was really strange, but I really liked it. on the screen she looks at her hand, a very soft and intimate smile on her face I like the way my hand looks in his tattooed one………He kissed me…. Frigga jumps up, front legs across her lap and noses her hand. She ruffles her fur and leans down, getting eye to eye with her. Her voice sounds confused and breathless. What am I going to do? Huh Frigga? I have never felt like that, ever, and he wants to have dinner again day after tomorrow.

there is no mention of the second dinner or of the events with Soulis in her quarters or her time with Kane. For the next week the only electronic records are two short text comms sent to her friend Hannah and to her parents

The head of the R&D lab has assigned me to a special project called Eden’s Apple. It was sent to him from Intel, and so by association I get to work on it. It’s a promising idea, I can only hope he can keep up.

I stayed with him, with Solomon last night…again. I’ve never felt like this before. It’s like I told him, I understand the biological, the physiological response, how it works and why. But this isn’t that. It’s…it’s one of those things my dad told me I can’t use my head for. He holds my hand and my whole body is warm, it starts somewhere in my chest and spreads everywhere. For everything I know I do not know how to explain this. I don’t think I want to either.

The project has taken a turn. Intel’s minds have made yet another mistake. They can only see one way to work a project and have missed the solution, yet again. Lt Kane and I have easily found their mistake, but it has taken days to get approval to change their ‘idea’ into a workable form. A call reminded them that I have been given carte blanche on any project I work on.

Part of being me is how fast and accurately I work on my own. Working as a team or with a partner has always been problematic for me. The speed at which this project is progressing is astounding. Solomon’s work, perspective, and attention to detail is remarkable. No one ever keeps up with me, but Solomon, he actually challenges me. He makes me faster, more accurate, and a better researcher. In the lab he is truly brilliant, the ideas and projects he has proposed and finished are brilliant. There is a short heavy pause. Here Alexis knows she has to be careful, no one is supposed to know where she’s staying, and she can’t let it slip. No man has touched me the way Solomon does. It’s like…like…she closes her eyes remembering like I matter to him, like I am precious and desirable. And I believe him when he tells me it’s true. He teases me, and talks to me. Frigga adores him, follows him anywhere she’s allowed….He leaves the lights on…

The DNA sequencing is finished and several alterations have been made. See attached diagrams and charts This last one seems to have everything we were aiming to achieve. The samples coming out of incubation are positive. Further analysis will have to wait until a plant is allowed to grow naturally without the incubator.

The first bush has naturally come to bare fruit. Much faster than initial analysis suspected. The amount of nutrition that will be produced within this new timeline exceeds both mine and Lt Kane’s expectations.
The genetic alterations to the seeds that allow the plant to grow and thrive in extreme conditions has had unexpected results on the fruit. The peel has altered to allow the fruit to stay fresh and viable for 7 times it’s original shelf life.

The second batch of seeds have grown and are now bearing fruit. Their timeline is consistent with the first test. All results are consistent between both tests within accepted standard deviations.

At Solomon’s urging she finally answers her correspondence. It’s out of the ordinary for her to miss her calls with Hannah and her parents.

The initial chemical analysis of the fruit is complete. A base analysis along with the enhanced analysis is included with this log. I was concerned that the intense amount might cause problems for patients who were severely malnutritioned, that the enhanced nutrients might be too harsh or complex for a malnutrition body. However tissue tests are showing positive results. I am waiting on Lt Kane’s secondary chemical analysis before going to clinical trials. The results are very promising. My contact at intel is very excited. When used on healthy tissue rather than damaged tissue it seems the nutritional value is still safe. The enhanced electrolytes don’t appear to create a build up of toxins in healthy tissue. This is an unexpecting and significant development.

Bonner’s Logs

“Alexis… oh honey… you were totally holding out on me. That’s going to be a spanking, indeed. And Mr. Kane… oh, if only I didn’t have to kill you for what you did. I bet we could have done amazing things together.” He chuckled a mental vision of him, Kane, and Bonner came into his mind… Bonner being subjected to both of them, but he shook his head and said “Too bad for you. Coulda been fun. But noooo… you are going to have to suffer quite a bit instead…”

“Maybe after I see just how good this ‘Eden’s Apple’ is firsthand…” and he began to digest the information… and it’s potential benefits to him personally.

‘Smith’ looked at Soulis in his office. “Bait is set and they have a bite. Think they can land this particular fish?” he said without looking away from the screen.

“Oh… land, clean, gut, filet, and fry in butter. I’m not ashamed to say… I really am curious as to what this is little trap is. Let me know when things move ahead. I want to see that in real time.” Smith nodded without a word.
