Doctor Mariah Grayson smiled at two passing crewman in engineering gold as they passed her in the corridor on her daily walk. Selfishly, Grayson made time for a daily walk about just to give her time and space away from her office. Such a change of scenery gave her an opportunity to clear her head and even gain clarity when thinking about the needs of the crew or a particular session she had just conducted.

Of course, such sojourns could also be beneficial professionally, as a lot could be deduced about the state of an entire crew just by making her way around while trying to be present but not overly intrusive.

Unlike a lot of medical professionals who could count on being sought out fairly regularly if for nothing more than because they could provide relief for pain that could be physically ignored for very long, therapists like herself needed to be seen to be perceived as accessible and not just someone to see as punishment or as an inevitability.

OOC Lori: I thought I’d get a simple thread going just to interact with anyone who wishes while I wait for my other thread partners to reply. Anyone game? My goal is to make Mariah less of a wallflower. :-)
OOC: Lovely idea! I’m sure Zahir wouldn’t mind chatting with her. Haha!

Isyme rounded the corner, her son strolling at her side with a smile broader than the Tarantula Nebula. His voice rang out like animated chatter, cerulean limbs thrown every way to bring sense to his words. Though she strived to keep pace with his tongue, Isyme grasped only tangled blips and a remarkable spirit. But she didn’t mind. She cherished her son’s enthusiasm, not with words, but rhythmic bobs of her head and an infallible smirk-like grin.

That was until something — or someone — distracted Zahir from his babble.

Before she could comprehend the change, Zahir tugged away to seek a fellow stroller before she passed. He approached with a pep in his step and his aura saturated with friendliness and youthful positivity. Isyme hadn’t the chance to interrupt as a greeting fell from his lips. “Hiya!” She heard him say from her mere distance. “How are you?”

Mariah was smiling wide before she had even fully approached her young and enthusiastic greeter and the woman she presumed was his mother. She loved children and the young boy’s enthusiasm was just the balm she needed to center herself and find joy in her day. “Hello,” Mariah replied, bending down slightly to be at his level but also keeping the adult in polite eye sight. “I’m well, thank you. I’ve very happy to see a smiling face. How are you?”

“I’m good, thanks.” His words rang with zeal and shock in equal measure. Though it was routine to approach passersby, Zahir wasn’t used to such friendliness. But he wasn’t about to complain. Without missing a beat, he struck out a small, blueish-grey hand. “I’m Zahir,” he jabbed his head to the woman behind him, “and that’s my Ma. What’s your name?”

— Zahir th’Siaqir, kiddo

Mariah’s smile grew even wider and she found herself bending down lower to take the child’s hand, still politely aware of the woman now identified as Zahir’s mother, but also quite taken with Zahir. He seemed quite precocious and that delighted Mariah. Of course, kids aboard starships tended to be more mature than most because of the opportunities they had to socialize amongst adults. “It’s nice to meet you and your Ma,” she added, adopting the moniker he had used. “I’m Mariah. I’m one of the doctors here aboard the Ogawa. I’m just out for a walk.”

Zahir hoisted his free hand to Mariah’s and gave her the best, heartiest handshake he could manage. Somewhat infirm but perfectly intentioned, he was proud of it. “Ooh!” The boy took a conscious step back. “What kind of medicine do you practice?” Mariah’s friendliness and warm disposition (at least toward him) made him think paediatrician. She was definitely too nice to be a surgeon, right? Maybe Ogawa had friendly surgeons. Zahir hadn’t had the chance to bug them yet. Before he could land on a solid guess, another question escaped his lips. “Do you want a walking buddy?”

— Zahir th’Siaqir

Armed with a tender, seemingly unnatural smile, Isyme lingered within metres of them. She examined a PaDD nestled between her fingers, politely avoiding eye contact to give her son and the good doctor privacy. Still, she remained dutifully aware in case something happened. Zahir’s question, seemingly innocuous, pulled her gaze back to them. She didn’t mind if Zahir walked with the good doctor, she trusted the staff on this ship and her son, but she was still a tad wary.

OOC: Bumping and making it easier to read! :)

Ever aware of how important it was for young children to be taken seriously, Mariah made every effort to school her features so he didn’t know she was tickled by all his cuteness and resisting the urge chuckle with delight. Instead, she turned her attention to his first question. “I am what’s called a psychiatrist,” Grayson began, “I hope people feel better when they are feeling upset.” It was perhaps an overly simplistic explanation for someone so precocious, but the psychiatrist recognized the obscure nature of her work and the potential for it to seem more serious and potentially scarier to a child if explained in depth. “I would love a walking buddy, but I think you better check with your Ma to see if you have time to walk with me or even if she would like to come along?” Grayson felt a little awkward referring to a woman that was standing not very far from her as if she weren’t present, but she appreciated the opportunity to have her own interaction with her adorable young boy.

OOC Lori: Thank you! I am loving this. :-)
OOC: Same here!
This one might be a little longer for the sake of scene-changing. :D

Zahir’s eyebrows crept to his antennae, mocking the excited glint in his eyes with a hint of surprise. “You help people feel better?” He echoed. “That sounds a lot harder than fixing a broken bone.” He shuddered, recalling his run-in with an osteo-regenerator. “Okay!” The boy’s delight distracted him. “I’ll be right back.”

Holding up a brief ‘one moment’ sign, he skipped over to this mother who waved at Doctor Greyson. Was it a hello? A goodbye? Zahir shrugged it off and beckoned her to his level. “Ma?” He asked when she knelt across from him. “Do we have time for a walk with Doctor Greyson?”

“Let’s see,” Isyme consulted the chronometer on her PaDD. “We do. Do you want me to tag along?”

“Nah, I think I’ll be okay.” He turned to smile at Mariah. “I promise to be safe.”

“You better,” Isyme half-eased. “Before you go, I’d like to say ‘hello’.”

Zahir lit up, beckoning his mother to follow him. He approached, wholly unaware Greyson might’ve heard their conversation, and grinned. “Doctor Greyson,” he gestured between them. “This is my Ma. Ma, this is Doctor Greyson.”

“Hello,” Isyme smiled and extended a hand. “Isyme Siaqir. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I hear you an Zahir are heading off on a walk?”

— Zahir and Isyme Siaqir

“Hello,” Grayson replied, shaking the other woman’s hand warmly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you as well. Would it be all right with you if the two of us went on a walk? You are more than welcome to come with us, of course, but if you have something else to do, I promise to keep him entertained and safe.” The psychiatrist realized this was an unorthodox situation and where is she in the other woman’s shoes, she might very well beg off the request, no matter how cute her son happened to be. She realized being in Starfleet gave her a certain level of credibility, but she also understood a mother had a right to refused to leave her child with a stranger.
